Knowing The Holy Spirit
• John 14:15-17
If you love Me, keep My
commandments. And I will pray the
Father, and He will give you another
Helper, that He may abide with you
forever- the Spirit of truth, whom the
world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him; but you know
Him, for He dwells with you and will be
in you.

Knowing The Holy spirit
• The most controversial subject
• Different individual different
interpretation.
• Different church different doctrine

• The most divisive subject
• Church split because of Him
• Relationship sours because of Him

• The most neglected subject
• Some denominations avoid teaching
about Him
• Some believers ignores Him

• To the extreme charismatic, is all
about the gifts n power of Holy
Spirit .
• To the ultra traditional, will think of
speaking in tongues only when the
Holy Spirit is mentioned.

• The greatest lies and tactics of Satan
• The Holy Spirit is the source of life
and power for children of God.
• The confusion not just cause division
and animosity.
• But robs us believers the
effectiveness and fruitfulness.

John 14:15-17
If you love Me, keep My

sees Him nor knows Him; but you know
Him, for He dwells with you and will be
in you.

• The truth is that :-
a) Holy Spirit is the promised Helper
b) Holy Spirit is for every believer
c) Holy Spirit is more than just His
gifts n power.

• The concept of the triune God
a) God the Father

c) God the Holy Spirit

• Three in persons
Matt 28:19 ‘baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit
• One in essence
Deut:6:4 ‘Hear O Israel, the LORD our
God, the LORD is one.’

• Both the Holy Spirit and the Son are
God and existed from the beginning
a)Gen 1:1-2
In the beginning…The earth was
without form, and void; and darkness
was on the face of the deep. And the
Spirit of God was hovering over the face
of the waters.

• Not easy to explain
• Like water, fire and man/woman
• Beyond human understanding
• Hebrew 11:6 ‘Without faith it is
impossible to please Him, for he who
comes to God must believe that He
is, and that He is a Rewarder of those
who diligently seek Him’.

To know the Holy Spirit is to know the
Son and the Father…John 16:13-15
.. for He will not speak on His own
authority, but whatever He hears He
will speak; and He will tell you things
to come. He will glorify Me, for He
will take of what is Mine and declare
it to you. All things that the Father
has are Mine. Therefore I said that
He will take of Mine and declare it to
you.

God the Father, the Son and the Spirit
always work together
• At creation/Tower of Babel – ‘Let us….’
• John 5:17 ‘My Father has been working
until now, and I have been working.’
• John 16:13 ‘He will not speak on His
own authority, but whatever He hears
He will speak.’
• Phil 1:6 ‘He who has begun a good work
in you will complete it until the day of
Jesus Christ.

How the Holy Spirit helps us?
a) The Holy Spirit gives life
1. At creation - Gen 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the
dust of the ground, and breathed into
his nostrils the breath of life; and the
man became a living being.

How the Holy Spirit helps us?
a) The Holy Spirit gives life
2. At salvation – John 6:44
‘No one can come to Me unless the
Father who sent Me draws him.’
3. Titus 3:5 - but according to His mercy
He saved us, through the washing of
regeneration and renewing of the
Holy Spirit.

b) The Holy Spirit changes life
1. He helps/ comforts..John 14:16
2. He teaches…………….John 14:26
3. He reminds……………John 14:26
4. He convicts …………..John 16:8
5. He guides/reveals…John 16:13
6. He emboldens us….2 Tim 1:7

c) The Holy Spirit Empowers life
1. To be obedient to God
Ezekiel 36:27
I will put My Spirit within you and
cause you to walk in My statutes,
and you will keep My judgments
and to do them.

2. To accomplish impossible task
Zechariah 4:6
‘Not by might nor by power, but by
My Spirit, ‘ says the LORD of hosts.

3. To unite & satisfy us as one body
1 Corinthians 12:13
For by one Spirit we were all baptized
into one body – whether Jews or
Greeks, whether slaves or free – have
all been made to drink into one Spirit.

4. To teach us how to pray
Romans 8:26
For we do not know what we should
pray for as we ought, but the Spirit
Himself makes intercession for us
with groaning which cannot be
uttered.

5. To build and strengthen the church
1 Corinthians 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit
is given to each one for the profit
of all.

6. To be the witness of Jesus
* Acts 1:8 ‘You shall receive power when
the Holy Spirit has come upon you;..’
* Galatians 5:16 & 22-23
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you
shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh…..But
the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..

7. To love God and others
Romans 5:5
The love of God has been poured
out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit
who was given to us.

8. To do the works of God
Luke 4:18 ‘The Spirit of the LORD is
upon Me, because He has anointed
Me to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to
the captives and recovery of sight to
the blind, to set at liberty those who
are oppressed; to proclaim the
acceptable year of the LORD.’

d) The Holy Spirit is the proof
1. Seal/ guarantee of our salvation
1 Corinthian 5:5
Now He who has prepared us for
this very thing is God, who has
given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

2. We are His children
Romans 8:9 & 16
Now if anyone does not have the
Spirit of Christ, he is not His…. The
Spirit Himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God.

Let’s Stop Living The Hard Way
a) Galatians 5:25
Since we are living by the Spirit, let us
follow the Spirit’s leading in every part
of our lives.
b) Romans 8:13
For if you live by the flesh you will die;
but by the Spirit you put to death the
deeds of the body, you will live.
c) Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of
God, these are sons of God.
