#DayofFacts: Pushing Back on Alternative Facts One Tweet At A Time [MCN 2017]
On February 17, 2017, over 350 cultural organizations—museums, libraries, archives, science centers, and educational groups—collectively rejected the idea of “alternative facts” by sharing thousands of posts on social media tagged #DayofFacts. Using facts about immigration, climate change, refugees, LGBT issues, freedom of the press, support for the arts, and more, the campaign quickly went viral and generated 50,000+ posts and plenty of press coverage. In this presentation, Mara will discuss the original goals of the campaign, how she and her co-conspirator Alli Hartley pulled off an international day of museum resistance, and evaluate of the success and usefulness of the action. Caitlin Kearney and Lucille Carver will discuss the Field Museum’s viral #DayofFacts video that was viewed over 1 million times and widely celebrated.
Mara will present the #DayofFacts both as a general social media case-study and one of institutional bravery: many participants needed convincing to join a potentially risky action. The campaign had to have a coherent message but also be relevant to each institution’s mission to mitigate possible blow-back for appearing too “political.” Factors that encouraged participation included the extensive content suggestions the organizers provided in advance, support from major museum and library organizations, and knowing which other institutions were participating. Mara will discuss inspiring feedback from the campaign as well as the problematic fact that the viral nature of the campaign activated some of the kind of negative rhetoric and unsubstantiated assertions it was meant to fight.
Ultimately, evaluation revealed increased engagement and goodwill for the majority of the institutional partners, was deeply meaningful for participants, and proved that standing up for truth in a mission-aligned way can be a huge benefit for institutions. To demonstrate this, Lucille and Caitlin will share a look at #DayofFacts from within the Field Museum: how they secured institutional buy-in to participate, how the video came to be, and the overwhelming positive reaction they received from their audiences and in staff morale.
The campaign demonstrated the need for museums as truth-tellers and provided a productive framework for institutions to assert their missions in a powerfully public and united way.

The City of Casselberry has begun taking a more rigorous approach to comprehensively assessing, maintaining, repairing and improving its 63 miles of roads and sidewalks over the past five years. In 2008, the City adopted the PASER program to evaluate pavement conditions, finding by 2009 that 75% of streets needed work ranging from preventative maintenance to reconstruction. The City is now implementing a multi-year pavement management plan focused on cost-effective preservation. It is also improving sidewalk and ADA accessibility through repairs and an ongoing assessment program. Overall the proactive approach has significantly extended the life of Casselberry's transportation infrastructure.

The Next Big Thing: Workshop Outcomes
The Next Big Thing Urbanism Workshop was an initiative to take previous design and community development efforts of Glass House Collective to the next level.
During a two-day intensive design workshop, over 100 workshop participants proposed ways to improve Glass Street while maintaining a realistic attitude about both big and small moves that, collectively, could begin to enhance the prospects for the neighborhood and its citizens.
Teams were asked to consider how improved urbanism could have a positive impact on various aspects of the neighborhood, including business viability, quality public spaces, access to services, improved housing options, increased public safety, and opportunities for the community to engage and contribute.
Designs needed to leverage the variety of assets that already exist in the community including physical places, existing businesses, individuals, organizations, previous accomplishments, and sections of the built environment.
What resulted were dozens of creative, realistic, and scalable urban revitalization tactics for improving residential, commercial, and public space within a 5 minute walk radius surrounding historic Glass Street, each contributing to the revitalization effort already underway. Designs specifically addressed implementation within 1 month, 1 year, 3 year time frames, prioritizing lighter, quicker, and cheaper techniques.
While not all the proposals generated will be implemented as designed, they will be the basis of successive small neighborhood workshops to explore specific concepts, projects, and implementation tactics reflecting the residential, commercial, and public space needs of the Glass Street community. Glass House Collective will work with the neighborhood to adapt designs, ultimately using a bunch of little things to create the next big thing on the street.
Using the lenses that Glass House Collective sees their work through, the Outcomes of The Next Big Thing Urbanism Workshop have been organized into three categories:
• Here Because We Love It Here, proposals focused on Creative Placemaking
• Bringing Life Back to Glass Street, proposals focused on Feet on the Streets
• The Next Big Thing, proposals focused on New Partnerships
Not all proposals developed during the workshop are included in this document; however, those that most closely meet the mission of Glass House Collective have been compiled and described in the pages that follow. The appendix lists all project proposals from each team.

ISLAND PROJECT: MEMORIAL AND HIRST The 4 million dollar project for the City of Parksville has been one of the most impactful projects for Knappett in terms of buy in from the crew at Memorial and Hirst have been working hard for the past 10 months (starting August 2021) the local community FORT ST. JOHN PROJECT: 100TH STREET Knappett is working in the City of Fort St John on the revitalization of 100 Street. An abandoned well was found and the crew battled poor weather conditions.
