At the same time, the technologically and ecologically inspired shift in social theory from subjects to objects, from masses to networks, and from people to things means we need to re-visit some of our assumptions about the agents of cultural production, also viewing the production of culture in line with other shifts in social approaches to knowledge, technics and labour.

Facility Management can align workplaces with the organizations’ Increasing pace of change. To do so, the future role of FM will need to include new innovative service concepts that go beyond solely looking at the workspace as an opportunity for reducing operating cost.
The ISS 2020 Vision report: New Ways of Working – the workplace of the future analyzes the strategic themes shaping the future workplace strategies. It also provides a framework for identifying the role of Facility Management in helping develop an organization’s workplace strategy given the competitive context, strategy, brand, culture, and existing workplaces.
The new white book builds upon the earlier findings from the ‘ISS 2020 Vision: Scenarios for the future of the global Facility Management Industry’, which concluded that future workplaces will change significantly over the coming decade.
The findings of ‘New Ways of Working’ were developed in partnership with IFMA through qualitative research and subject matter expert interviews and several workshops with customers. The study also presents external expert assessments from the Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies of the strategic themes shaping the future work, the workforce and the workplace towards 2020.

The ISS 2020 Vision: Future of Public Sector Outsourcing report builds upon and extends the scope of the two previous ISS 2020 Vision studies: Scenarios for the Future of the Global Facility Management Industry (2011), and New ways of Working: The Workplace of the Future (NWOW) (2013). Thomas Edison created the electric lightbulb
and then wrapped an entire industry around
it. The lightbulb is most often thought of as his
signature invention, but Edison understood
that the bulb was little more than a parlor
trick without a system of electric power gener-
ation and transmission to make it truly useful.
So he created that, too.
Thus Edison’s genius lay in his ability to con-
ceive of a fully developed marketplace, not
simply a discrete device. He was able to envi-
sion how people would want to use what he
made, and he engineered toward that insight.
He wasn’t always prescient (he originally be-
lieved the phonograph would be used mainly
as a business machine for recording and replay-
ing dictation), but he invariably gave great con-
sideration to users’ needs and preferences.
Edison’s approach was an early example of
what is now called “design thinking”—a meth-
odology that imbues the full spectrum of inno-
vation activities with a human-centered design
ethos. By this I mean that innovation is pow-
ered by a thorough understanding, through di-
rect observation, of what people want and
need in their lives and what they like or dislike
about the way particular products are made,
packaged, marketed, sold, and supported.
Many people believe that Edison’s greatest
invention was the modern R&D laboratory
and methods of experimental investigation.
Edison wasn’t a narrowly specialized scientist
but a broad generalist with a shrewd business
sense. In his Menlo Park, New Jersey, labora-
tory he surrounded himself with gifted tinker-
ers, improvisers, and experimenters. Indeed,
he broke the mold of the “lone genius inven-
tor” by creating a team-based approach to in-
novation. Although Edison biographers write
of the camaraderie enjoyed by this merry
band, the process also featured endless
rounds of trial and error—the “99% perspira-
tion” in Edison’s famous definition of genius.
His approach was intended not to validate
preconceived hypotheses but to help experi-
menters learn something new from each iter-

A Path Model Why-What-How-When To Implement An IC Reporting
This document presents a path model called "why-what-how-when" to implement intellectual capital (IC) reporting in organizations. The model is applied to a case study of a company that designs and develops large systems for homeland protection.

Abstract:
“Health Informatics”. “Urban Informatics”. “Social Informatics”. Informatics offers systemic ways of analyzing and designing the interaction of natural and artificial information processing systems. In the context of education, I will describe some Learning Informatics lenses and practices which we have developed for co-designing analytics and AI with educators and students. We have a particular focus on closing the feedback loop to equip learners with competencies to navigate a complex, uncertain future, such as critical thinking, professional reflection and teamwork. En route, we will touch on how we build educators’ trust in novel tools, our design philosophy of “embracing imperfection” in machine intelligence, and the ways that these infrastructures embody values. Speaking from the perspective of leading an institutional innovation centre in learning analytics, I hope that our experiences spark productive reflection around as the UMN Learning Informatics Lab builds its program.
Biography:
Simon Buckingham Shum is Professor of Learning Informatics at the University of Technology Sydney, where he serves as inaugural director of the Connected Intelligence Centre. CIC is a transdisciplinary innovation centre, using analytics to provide new insights for university teams, with particular expertise in educational data science. Simon’s career-long fascination with software’s ability to make thinking visible has seen him active in communities including Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, Hypertext, Design Rationale, Scholarly Publishing, Semantic Web, Computational Argumentation, Educational Technology and Learning Analytics. The challenge of visualizing contested knowledge has produced several books: Visualizing Argumentation, Knowledge Cartography, and Constructing Knowledge Art. Abstract:
“Health Informatics”. “Urban Informatics”. “Social Informatics”. Informatics offers systemic ways of analyzing and designing the interaction of natural and artificial information processing systems. In the context of education, I will describe some Learning Informatics lenses and practices which we have developed for co-designing analytics and AI with educators and students. We have a particular focus on closing the feedback loop to equip learners with competencies to navigate a complex, uncertain future, such as critical thinking, professional reflection and teamwork. En route, we will touch on how we build educators’ trust in novel tools, our design philosophy of “embracing imperfection” in machine intelligence, and the ways that these infrastructures embody values. Speaking from the perspective of leading an institutional innovation centre in learning analytics, I hope that our experiences spark productive reflection around as the UMN Learning Informatics Lab builds its program.
Biography:
Simon Buckingham Shum is Professor of Learning Informatics at the University of Technology Sydney, where he serves as inaugural director of the Connected Intelligence Centre. CIC is a transdisciplinary innovation centre, using analytics to provide new insights for university teams, with particular expertise in educational data science. Simon’s career-long fascination with software’s ability to make thinking visible has seen him active in communities including Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, Hypertext, Design Rationale, Scholarly Publishing, Semantic Web, Computational Argumentation, Educational Technology and Learning Analytics. The challenge of visualizing contested knowledge has produced several books: Visualizing Argumentation, Knowledge Cartography, and Constructing Knowledge Art. In his webcast, Professor Bhattacharya will point out that it is not enough nowadays for companies to "do well" (Profit). Companies need to "do good" as well for communities (People) and the environment (Planet). Achieving this triple bottom line (People, Planet, Profit) is not a zero sum game but these linkages and strategies are often underexplored as most companies are largely in the dark when it comes to understanding how their stakeholders think and feel about their Corporate Responsibility (CR) programs. Based on the research in his book, Prof. Bhattacharya suggests that stakeholders' responses to a company's CR initiatives are driven by three levers: Understanding, Usefulness and Unity (the 3U's model).
