ENGLISH – POWER POINT

NARRATIVE
• A narrative (or story) is any account of connectedevents,
presented to a reader or listener in a sequenceof writtenor
spoken words, or in a sequence of (moving) pictures.
• The word "story" may be used as a synonym of "narrative". It
can also be used to refer to the sequence of events described
in a narrative.
EXAMPLE
• The Legend of Sura and Baya
A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the
name of a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea.
Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a
goat.
“Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya.
“No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy” said Sura. Then they fought for
the goat. After several hours, they were very tired.
Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the
water and Baya lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would
never fight again.
One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He
was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very
angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise.
They fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did
the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and
Awent back to the sea. Baya was happy.
DESCRIPTIVE
• 1serving or seeking to describe:the text contains some
good descriptive passages
• Grammar (of an adjective) assigning a quality rather
than restricting the application of the expression
modified, e.g. blue as distinct from few.
• 2describing or classifying in an objective and non-
judgemental way.
• Linguistics denoting or relating to an approach to
language analysis that describes accents, forms,
structures, and usage without making value
judgements.
EXAMPLE
• Susan's Activites
Susan is a diligent student. First, at home she starts his day by
studying at 4.00 am. She thinks that studying at that time making
her getting the idea of the lesson. Second, she never comes late to
school. She arrives to school 15 minutes before the class begins.
Susan follows her class with much appreciates. She always asking
without hesitates to her teacher and she is always happy if given
tasks. At the rest time, Susan spend her time not to chat with her
friends too much. She prefers to study over again to make sure that
she doesn’t forget about the material. The student goes home at
3.00 pm. When the other students go home, Susan doesn’t. She
stops in the library which is near from the school. She borrows the
book and sometimes she also read the books there. She sometimes
read for a good book that is thin; so it not spends many times for
reading. Third, Susan always studies in the night. She does her
homework which was given in the school.
PROCEDURE
The purpose procedural text is to tell the
reader how to do or make something. The
information is presented in a logical sequence
of events which is broken up into small
sequenced steps. These texts are usually
written in the present tense. The most
common example of a procedural text is a
recipe.

text : (1)Texts that explain how something
works or how to use instruction / operation
manuals e.g. how to use the video, the
computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier,
the fax. (2) Texts that instruct how to do a
particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games,
science experiments, road safety rules. (3)
Texts that deal with human behaviour eg how
to live happily, how to succeed.

Dari keterangan di atas, dapat kita garis bawahi
bahwa procedure text adalah (1) Teks yang
menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu bekerja atau
teks yang menjelaskan cara menggunakan
pedoman instruksi / penggunaan. contoh : cara
menggunakan video, komputer, mesin fotokopi,
fax dll. (2) Teks yang menunjukan cara melakukan
aktifitas tertentu. contoh : resep, aturan bermain
game, eksperimen ilmiah, aturan keamanan
berkendara. (3) Teks yang berhubungan dengan
tingkah laku manusia. contoh : cara hidup
bahagian, cara sukses. dll.
EXAMPLE
• Making Meatballs
ingredients :
• 1 kilo of very fine minced meat (preferably beef)
• 2 eggs
• 300 grams of tapioca-flour
• 4-8 cloves of garlic
• 1 red onion
• 1 teaspoon of white pepper
• 2 teaspoons of salt
Steps :
• First of all,mix garlic, red onion, salt, and white pepper in a mortar or mixer.
• Second step, mix the spice-mixture with the eggs, the tapioca-flour and the minced meat.
• After that, use your fingers, add a cup of water, and keep on working until the mixture feels
soft and smooth.
• Then, boil some water in a rather large pot, at least about 2 liters.
• Next step, start rolling the mixture into small meatballs.
• Finally, lower the meatballs into the boiling water. When they float up to the surface the
meatball are ready to serve.
RECOUNT TEXT
A recount text is a text that tells you a part of
experience. A recount text has an orientation, a series
of events in chronological order, personal remarks on
the events and a reorientation that “rounds off” the
sequence of events. In the text, you find words and
phrases used to start, connect a sentence with the next
one, and end your composition. Those words and
phrases are:

Then,
After that,
Finally,
EXAMPLE
• TRAVELING BY AIR
I really hate flying. Once something happened to me. when I was
on board, the plane started taking off. It seemed that everything
was all right. But suddenly I saw smoke coming from engine of the
plane. The engine was on fire and the plane started to rattle.
Suddenly the captain said to us in a very calm voice. “Ladies and
gentlemen, we are having a little problem with one of the engines.
There is no need to panic. Keep your seat belts fastened. We are
going to return to the airport.”
You can imagine how frightened I was, but the crew was fantastic.
The flight attendants were really calm and told us not to worry. One
of them told me to relax and said that everything would be all right.
A few minutes later, we were coming in to land, the pilot made a
smooth landing on the runway. It was over, and we were safe.
I took a taxi and went home. From that day on, I decided not to fly
anymore.
NEWS ITEM
• News item is a text which informs readers about events of
the day. The events are considered newsworthy or
important. (News item adalah teks yang memberikan
informasi tentang kejadian / peristiwa harian. Peristiwa
harian ini dianggap pantas dijadikan berita atau [bisa
dibilang] penting)
• Artinya, jika ada suatu peristiwa penting yang patut
diketahui oleh banyak orang, maka peristiwa ini pantas
dijadikan berita. Nah, teks berita itulah yang dinamakan
dengan news item. Namun, jika ada peristiwa yang tidak
pantas diketahui oleh orang banyak, maka peristiwa
tersebut jelas tidak layak dijadikan berita
EXAMPLE
The deaths of Leeteuk's father and grandparents deemed possible suicide

It was revealed earlier that the father and grandparents of SUPER JUNIOR’S
LEETEUK had died after a fatal car accident. However, reps from the fire and police
department are reporting that it was not a car accident, but rather a possible
suicide as the three of them were discovered in their home.
A rep from the Dongjak Fire Station in Seoul told news outlet MBN Star, "Currently,
the situation related to Leeteuk's father and grandparents are being reported as a
car accident, but this is different from what we know. This was not a car accident;
we are looking at the possibility of suicide . . . The three of them were all discovered
at their house."
Likewise, a rep from the Dongjak Police Station told TV Report, "We moved at 9:07
AM on January 6 and found the three people deceased at their home; therefore, we
are looking into possible suicide.“
As the claims by the fire and police stations contradict with what was reported
earlier today by the media, the exact truth still remains to be seen. Meanwhile,
the memorial altar will take place on January 8 at the Korea University Medical
Center (Guro Hospital)'s funeral parlor.

NARRATIVE • A narrative (or story) is any account of connectedevents, presented to a reader or listener in a sequenceof writtenor spoken words, or in a sequence of (moving) pictures. • The word "story" may be used as a synonym of "narrative". It can also be used to refer to the sequence of events described in a narrative.
  • 4. EXAMPLE • The Legend of Sura and Baya A long time ago, there were two animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was the name of a shark and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea. Once Sura and Baya were looking for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat. “Yummy, this is my lunch,” said Baya. “No way! This is my lunch. You are greedy” said Sura. Then they fought for the goat. After several hours, they were very tired. Feeling tired of fighting, they lived in the different places. Sura lived in the water and Baya lived in the land. The border was the beach, so they would never fight again. One day, Sura went to the land and looked for some food in the river. He was very hungry and there was not much food in the sea. Baya was very angry when he knew that Sura broke the promise. They fought again. They both hit each other. Sura bit Baya's tail. Baya did the same thing to Sura. He bit very hard until Sura finally gave up and Awent back to the sea. Baya was happy.

DESCRIPTIVE • 1serving or seeking to describe:the text contains some good descriptive passages • Grammar (of an adjective) assigning a quality rather than restricting the application of the expression modified, e.g. blue as distinct from few. • 2describing or classifying in an objective and non- judgemental way. • Linguistics denoting or relating to an approach to language analysis that describes accents, forms, structures, and usage without making value judgements.
  • 6. EXAMPLE • Susan's Activites Susan is a diligent student. First, at home she starts his day by studying at 4.00 am. She thinks that studying at that time making her getting the idea of the lesson. Second, she never comes late to school. She arrives to school 15 minutes before the class begins. Susan follows her class with much appreciates. She always asking without hesitates to her teacher and she is always happy if given tasks. At the rest time, Susan spend her time not to chat with her friends too much. She prefers to study over again to make sure that she doesn’t forget about the material. The student goes home at 3.00 pm. When the other students go home, Susan doesn’t. She stops in the library which is near from the school. She borrows the book and sometimes she also read the books there. She sometimes read for a good book that is thin; so it not spends many times for reading. Third, Susan always studies in the night. She does her homework which was given in the school.
  • 7. PROCEDURE The purpose procedural text is to tell the reader how to do or make something. The information is presented in a logical sequence of events which is broken up into small sequenced steps. These texts are usually written in the present tense. The most common example of a procedural text is a recipe.
  • 8. ^_^ Ada tiga definisi "umum" mengenai procedure text : (1)Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction / operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax. (2) Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for games, science experiments, road safety rules. (3) Texts that deal with human behaviour eg how to live happily, how to succeed.

Dari keterangan di atas, dapat kita garis bawahi bahwa procedure text adalah (1) Teks yang menjelaskan bagaimana sesuatu bekerja atau teks yang menjelaskan cara menggunakan pedoman instruksi / penggunaan. contoh : cara menggunakan video, komputer, mesin fotokopi, fax dll. (2) Teks yang menunjukan cara melakukan aktifitas tertentu. contoh : resep, aturan bermain game, eksperimen ilmiah, aturan keamanan berkendara. (3) Teks yang berhubungan dengan tingkah laku manusia. contoh : cara hidup bahagian, cara sukses. dll.

EXAMPLE • Making Meatballs ingredients : • 1 kilo of very fine minced meat (preferably beef) • 2 eggs • 300 grams of tapioca-flour • 4-8 cloves of garlic • 1 red onion • 1 teaspoon of white pepper • 2 teaspoons of salt Steps : • First of all,mix garlic, red onion, salt, and white pepper in a mortar or mixer. • Second step, mix the spice-mixture with the eggs, the tapioca-flour and the minced meat. • After that, use your fingers, add a cup of water, and keep on working until the mixture feels soft and smooth. • Then, boil some water in a rather large pot, at least about 2 liters. • Next step, start rolling the mixture into small meatballs. • Finally, lower the meatballs into the boiling water. When they float up to the surface the meatball are ready to serve.
  • 11. RECOUNT TEXT A recount text is a text that tells you a part of experience. A recount text has an orientation, a series of events in chronological order, personal remarks on the events and a reorientation that “rounds off” the sequence of events. In the text, you find words and phrases used to start, connect a sentence with the next one, and end your composition. Those words and phrases are: First, Then, After that, Finally,
  • 12. EXAMPLE • TRAVELING BY AIR I really hate flying. Once something happened to me. when I was on board, the plane started taking off. It seemed that everything was all right. But suddenly I saw smoke coming from engine of the plane. The engine was on fire and the plane started to rattle. Suddenly the captain said to us in a very calm voice. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are having a little problem with one of the engines. There is no need to panic. Keep your seat belts fastened. We are going to return to the airport.” You can imagine how frightened I was, but the crew was fantastic. The flight attendants were really calm and told us not to worry. One of them told me to relax and said that everything would be all right. A few minutes later, we were coming in to land, the pilot made a smooth landing on the runway. It was over, and we were safe. I took a taxi and went home. From that day on, I decided not to fly anymore.
  • 13. NEWS ITEM • News item is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or important. (News item adalah teks yang memberikan informasi tentang kejadian / peristiwa harian. Peristiwa harian ini dianggap pantas dijadikan berita atau [bisa dibilang] penting) • Artinya, jika ada suatu peristiwa penting yang patut diketahui oleh banyak orang, maka peristiwa ini pantas dijadikan berita. Nah, teks berita itulah yang dinamakan dengan news item. Namun, jika ada peristiwa yang tidak pantas diketahui oleh orang banyak, maka peristiwa tersebut jelas tidak layak dijadikan berita

EXAMPLE The deaths of Leeteuk's father and grandparents deemed possible suicide January 6, 2014 @ 11:46 am It was revealed earlier that the father and grandparents of SUPER JUNIOR’S LEETEUK had died after a fatal car accident. However, reps from the fire and police department are reporting that it was not a car accident, but rather a possible suicide as the three of them were discovered in their home. A rep from the Dongjak Fire Station in Seoul told news outlet MBN Star, "Currently, the situation related to Leeteuk's father and grandparents are being reported as a car accident, but this is different from what we know. This was not a car accident; we are looking at the possibility of suicide . . . The three of them were all discovered at their house." Likewise, a rep from the Dongjak Police Station told TV Report, "We moved at 9:07 AM on January 6 and found the three people deceased at their home; therefore, we are looking into possible suicide.“ As the claims by the fire and police stations contradict with what was reported earlier today by the media, the exact truth still remains to be seen. Meanwhile, the memorial altar will take place on January 8 at the Korea University Medical Center (Guro Hospital)'s funeral parlor.
