kHealth Bariatrics is an effort to bout against weight recidivism post bariatric surgery. The computer scientists working at Kno.e.sis, an Ohio Center of Excellence in BioHealth Innovation, are collaborating with a bariatric surgeon and a behavioural specialist to bolster weight loss surgery patients for appropriate postsurgical progress.

2. Obesity: A Growing Epidemic
- 500 million people all over the world are obese
- 36% of adults in the United States have obesity
- 65% of the world’s population lives in countries
where the occurrence of death due to overweight
and obesity is higher than being underweight
Obesity Surgery
- Chances of regaining weight as stomach can still expand
- Continuous monitoring by the surgeon is essential
Challenges:
- Patient acceptance and active participation
involving continuous monitoring of the patient
- Cost and reimbursement models
- Challenging research in understanding of variety of data over long period

3. Solution:
A system that can
- Monitor the patient continuously and remotely
- Identify non compliance before and after surgery
- Nudge/assist for better compliance for improved outcomes and reduce recidivism
Parameters to be monitored:
- Diet, water intake and Weight
- Sleep
- Heart Rate and Activity
- Vitamin Pills
Proposed method:
Aggregate the primary parameters and use artificial intelligence techniques to
(a) Analyse and predict the deviations that could cause the post surgical complications and
(b) Serve as an assistant leading to better compliance and outcomes
4. kHealth Bariatrics
- A multisensory approach to support patient’s post surgical progress
- Collaboration with surgeon and psychiatrist
Android app:
Questions to monitor diet and
emotional well being of patients
Example:
1. How was your mood today?
2. How would you rate your sleep?
3. Did you drink any caffeinated drinks?
Sensors:
- Wireless weighing machine
- Activity tracker
- Water bottle sensor
- Pill bottle sensor
