This Keynote is a very short walk down a path that was part of MetLife's broader journey to Microservices and Containers. Highlighted are a couple of key success factors - not the least of which was the diversity of the innovation team that tackled the challenges bringing Docker as a platform, and our first microservices-based application, to production.
Midrex Global Logistics transported large industrial furnace components from Asia to the Gulf Coast of the USA for a project. The oversized cargo was offloaded from a vessel onto a barge for final delivery since it was too large for trucks. All cargo arrived safely at its destination within the construction schedule.
The document discusses Netflix's transition from a monolithic Java application running on Oracle databases to microservices using multiple languages like Java, Python, and JavaScript. It describes how Netflix developed NEWT (Netflix Workflow Toolkit) to provide a consistent development experience for all languages. NEWT simplifies tasks like packaging, building, and deploying through commands that isolate tool environments and versions. This unified approach reduced complexity when adopting new languages and allowed Netflix to treat applications similarly regardless of the underlying technology.

TRANSFORM FROM PROJECT TO PRODUCT TO SURVIVE THE AGE OF DIGITAL DISRUPTION Mani Maun
This document discusses transforming from a project mindset to a product mindset to survive digital disruption. It begins with an agenda for the presentation. It then explains the difference between traditional product development and digital product development. It discusses why leaders are stuck in old project-oriented ways of working using models of technological revolutions. It outlines the differences between a project and product mindset in terms of budgeting, timeframes, success metrics, and more. It provides Nokia as a case study of how using a project mindset led to disconnects and ultimately disruption. The presentation concludes with discussing managing software delivery as an end-to-end value stream.

Agile Capitalization For Greater Business ValueCA Technologies
With disruptive technology advances, software assets play an increasingly important role in creating a competitive advantage. It’s time for organizations to recognize and manage business software as a strategic corporate asset.
To keep up with the speed of business, companies turn to agile practices to deliver better customer value faster.
Challenge: agile software development is too often misunderstood and misreported, impacting taxation, higher volatility in Profit and Loss (P&L) statements, and dramatic, unnecessary staff cuts in an economy where talent retention is paramount to foster innovation.
To avoid those negative implications, companies can evolve their financial reporting practices to leverage the financial advantage of agile so they can benefit from the significantly increased tax savings and investor interest associated with agile capitalization.
This session will unravel the benefits of agile capitalization and explain how to appropriately interpret and apply generally accepted accounting standard (GAAP SOP 98-1 and ASC 350-40) so your organization can increase its agile adoption to deliver more business value faster to customers.

HijackLoader Evolution: Interactive Process HollowingDonato Onofri
CrowdStrike researchers have identified a HijackLoader (aka IDAT Loader) sample that employs sophisticated evasion techniques to enhance the complexity of the threat. HijackLoader, an increasingly popular tool among adversaries for deploying additional payloads and tooling, continues to evolve as its developers experiment and enhance its capabilities.
In their analysis of a recent HijackLoader sample, CrowdStrike researchers discovered new techniques designed to increase the defense evasion capabilities of the loader. The malware developer used a standard process hollowing technique coupled with an additional trigger that was activated by the parent process writing to a pipe. This new approach, called "Interactive Process Hollowing", has the potential to make defense evasion stealthier.

1868:
1,477 policies for $4.3 million
The Universal Stock Ticker developed by Thomas Edison in 1869 used alphanumeric characters with a printing speed of approximately one character per second.
1884:
On January 1, Metropolitan announced that it had 526,042 policyholders in-force
The company purchased its first “calculating machines” for use by Home Office clerks. Twelve arithmometers were purchased from a vendor in London who installed them in New York to mitigate the necessity of “figuring by hand” many tedious, routine assignments.
1898:
Metropolitan began paying death claims by telegraph in February, except in cases where proofs of death were incomplete or unsatisfactory.
1920:
Metropolitan nurses made more than 1.6 million free visits to 295,933 sick Industrial and Group policyholders.
On average, the number of claims paid per day was 1,029 – one claim paid for every 28 seconds of each business day of eight hours.
1950:
This brought the total amount of the company’s life insurance in force to $45.4 billion covering the lives of more than 33 million persons.
Metropolitan had nearly 150,000 separate investments.
1954:
MetLife ushers in the high-tech era by installing UNIVAC, the first large-scale computer system in the life insurance industry.
1965-67:
Equipment for a new wire communications system linking a centralized computer system to almost 1,000 local offices was successfully tested. When installed, the system would eliminate much paper work, provide rapid communication, and enable Metropolitan to provide policyholders with even more efficient personalized service.
Completed in 1967
In 1967
Metropolitan introduced its Electronic Family Security Check-Up, a dramatic new way of showing how one can provide for their family’s future financial security. The Metropolitan representative received from their customer all the facts about their income, assets, liabilities and family needs. These figures were fed into the company’s computer that weighs the situation against the experience of similar families, and produces a plan for providing a secure future.
1970:
Metropolitan's eight new data centers employed nearly 1,700 people by the end of the year.
1982:
The company set an industry record in group life insurance in-force, becoming the first insurer to surpass $300 billion.
The company completed development of its Unified Claim System, providing state-of-the-art computerization for drug, vision care, dental and medical claims processing.
This is the year Met really started modeling its whole business inside of computers…
Mainframe computers…
Much of the original code from the era still exists today making it 35 years old
1983:
The company began installation of a computer network in all personal insurance sales offices in the U.S. and Canada. The SONIC (Sales Office Network of Intelligent Computers) system, one of the most advanced systems in business, involved more than 1,000 computers and had a major effect on cost-effective sales and administration.
2000:
The company introduced on-line bill payment via the Internet for business customers on September 26. On-line bill payment is now available to MetLife clients through MetLink (www.metlink.com), MetLife’s on-line benefits web site for employers.
