Kennel cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease among dogs that is caused by the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. Puppies, older dogs, and cats are most at risk. Dogs often contract the disease at boarding facilities or dog parks through contact with other infected dogs. Symptoms include coughing, loss of appetite, and fever. While most dogs recover without treatment, antibiotics and supportive care can help relieve symptoms. Vaccines are available but may not prevent all infections.
