The tools and plugins we use every day slowly change over time, and it's been a while since we've talked about what's new. Our toolset has changed quite a lot over the past six months, so this Meetup was dedicated to sharing these plugins tools. During this Meetup, we touched on:
- Tools for your website, for things like handling backups, updates and security.
- Tools for your business, for things like billing, contracts, and proposals.
- Tools for getting things done, for things like task management, contacts, email and more.

Meetup: The big change coming to WordPress in 2018 - GutenbergMickey Mellen
Sometime this year, possibly as soon as April, WordPress will be releasing a huge update to their main page/post editing tool called "Gutenberg". While this will have a major impact on how users interact with WordPress, it will also greatly impact how sites are built in the future.
From our October 26, 2017 Meetup.
As a business owner (even if you're a one-person shop), you have a lot of hats to wear. We'll dig into tools for:
Finding and tracking leads: Keep up with your pipeline and know when to follow up with leads. There are some awesome tools to help automate this, and we'll show you those.
Make email easier: At GreenMellen we use a handful of tools to help make email easier to manage and help keep our inboxes clean.
Education: We're big believers that people should educate themselves, so we'll show you tools to make it easier to read book and blogs, listen to podcasts, etc.
Daily "stuff": We all have a lot to do every day, so we'll show you our favorite tools for calendars, tasks, and things to just help get everything smooth and organized.
WordCamp Birmingham 2017 - Blogging strategies for 2018Mickey Mellen
This document provides blogging strategies for 2018, including where to blog, finding blog post ideas, developing a writing process, adding graphics and finding themes. It recommends using Feedly to find topics, drafting multiple versions of posts, and linking to other websites. Specific plugins and themes like StudioPress, Akismet and WP Rocket are also mentioned to make blogging more effective. The document ends with encouraging readers to publish their work and asking if they have any other questions.
Online video marketing is continuing to be one of the most popular marketing tools across industries. Guest speaker Scott Williford, CEO of vLink Solutions, is an expert on video marketing. During this Meetup, he shares insights on why video is so powerful and gives best practices on how to make your video more engaging.
The document discusses the benefits of exercise for mental health. Regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety and depression and improve mood and cognitive functioning. Exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that may help protect against mental illness and improve symptoms.
We've talked about SEO quite a bit in this Meetup, but that's not really what today is about. We'll be looking at the little things you can do on your site to help supplement your SEO efforts. We'll have hands-on tips on some topics such as:
• Security plugins. We'll dig deep into "iThemes Security" and look at the various options and how they help, as well as a bit of a look at WordFence and others. We'll also dig into ManageWP a bit, as keeping things consistently updated is a major factor in keeping your site secure.
• Caching. Speed is crucial, so we'll look at WP Rocket and how to make it work for you.
• Jetpack. Jetpack has some settings for speed and security, and it can help to supplement the above items.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
