This document provides guidance for a campus ministry module focused on embracing the power of the Holy Spirit. It includes an introduction noting how the Holy Spirit creates fellowship with God and others. The module then outlines bible passages, studies on embracing God's wisdom and loving one another, and suggestions for outreach and online resources. The studies involve group discussions on what it means to be wise and who constitutes our brothers and sisters. The goal is to spark awareness of the Holy Spirit's work and inspire acting for God through overcoming selfishness.

In this presentation, I am teaching Lesson 3 of the Mission Preparation class from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to my teenage kids. The lesson topic is Learning by the Spirit of God. Before missionaries can teach by the Spirit, which is essential, they first must come to understand how to learn by the Spirit.

PREFACE
“‘Be thankful’ (Colossians 3:15) is a recurring exhortation in the letters of the apostle Paul. No other New Testament writer gives such a sustained emphasis on thanksgiving―and yet, major modern studies of Paul fail to wrestle with it. Dr. Paul Allieu Kamara aims to rehabilitate this theme in this comprehensive and accessible study, a New Studies in Biblical Theology volume. He shows how, for Paul, thanksgiving is grounded in the covenantal traditions of salvation history. To offer thanks to God is to live a life of worship and to anticipate the future acts of God, all in submission to the lordship of Christ. Ingratitude to God is idolatry. Thanksgiving functions as a link between theology, including eschatology, and ethics. Here Dr. Paul Allieu Kamara provides clear insights into the passion of an apostle who never fails to insist on the significance of both the gospel message and the response this message demands. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understanding their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.”

The question, “Does life have meaning and purpose” is as old as time. The culture we live in does not always help us live a good life. Christians believe that their faith makes sense and that it provides a path towards a meaningful life even if we have to struggle to understand how God wants us to live. We that our faith is trustworthy. It is the truth that gives meaning to life.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

3. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Introduction
Ecumenism and the Christian life are bound together by the
work of the Holy Spirit.
This module seeks to spark your awareness of the Holy Spirit
in your life. Many Christians fail to ask this question and
consequently are unaware of the work of the Spirit in their
lives. It is this spirit that creates fellowship with God and
others in the unity of God’s love.
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the God, who sets us free. By
God’s power we become children of God. Christian freedom
is freedom to understand who we really are and whose we
really are!
4. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Introduction
It is freedom from viewing ourselves according to our human
limitations and instead to see ourselves as God sees us. It is
this freedom that inspires us to act for God so that we are not
driven by selfish motives and hopes.
When we discover the Holy Spirit we see things according to
the truth about ourselves. We do not see, but we are seen.
We do not know, but we are known. There are no claims on
us except those that bind us to God. God is in the beginning,
in the end, and the middle of our lives. Through the Spirit we
are created and recreated in his image.
5. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Guiding Question
How can we, as Christians, embrace the power of the Holy
Spirit to become children of God?
6. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Guiding Bible Passage
1 Corinthians 12:4-7 (NRSV)
4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and
there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and
there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who
activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the
manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
7. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Passages

John 3:5-6
1 Cor. 12:4-7
Ps. 139:7-10
1 John 4:16b-21.
8. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Worship Center
For the Worship Center you will need: Bibles, a candle for
each participant. One piece of cardboard for every
discussion group, glue and staples, string, adhesive tape,
sticky tack etc. White paper, colored markers, crayons,
pencils, and/or pens.
Place a white cloth on your Worship Center. Place a candle
in a candleholder in the center of the table.
9. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of
God/Opening Prayer
Pray the Lord’s Prayer.
10. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of God
Christianity has always had something unique and powerful
to say about wisdom. It has little to do with the way we
normally think about wisdom and smarts, and it shatters our
culture's shallow ideas about spirituality. In our letter today
Paul goes to great lengths to debunk the dream of attaining
great wisdom. The Greek Corinthians thought that in being
wise they could climb closer to God. Paul claims that in the
light of God's saving work through Christ, what once seemed
wise is now foolish and what appears as folly is actually the
wisdom of God.
11. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of
God
It looks like Paul is advocating being dumb, but this is not at
all what is being said. Paul's rejection of human wisdom in
favor of proclaiming God's wisdom does not constitute a sort
of dumbing-down of the spiritual life. On the contrary, Paul
testifies that it is his insight into the power of the gospel that
drives him forward, that urges him to new depth of
commitment and encourages him to take higher, more
genuine risks.
12. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of God
Think how hard it must have been for Paul, one of the great
minds and leaders of his time to admit that he was weak and
scared. Yet he admits is freely. And then in the wake of this
confession, he exhorts us to abandon human preconceptions
about wisdom. Embrace the wisdom of God, he says. You
will find it in the foolishness of Christ crucified.
13. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of
God
Reflection.
Ask: Do we have the right attitude about being wise. We live
in a culture that is very ambivalent about being wise. Our
parents spend fortunes trying to ensure that their children are
prepared for college and that they have a head-start on the
academic achievement ladder. Everyone knows that
knowledge means power and success. But at the very same
time, we don't really like being portrayed as knowing too
much.
14. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of
God
Reflection.
We even have a way of denigrating intelligence that is very
subtle but effective. Remember High School! To be called a
wise guy was not a compliment. It was even more
denigrating to be called a "smart mouth" or "smart aleck”.
How do we know what is wise?
Write your answers on pieces cardboard and discuss
together.
15. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Embrace the Wisdom of
God/Closing Prayer
Gather around the worship center in prayer.
Each person will place a lighted candle in the middle of the
table and offer prayers asking for the help of the Holy Spirit
to free us for love and fellowship.
Close with the Lord’s Prayer.
16. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Loving One
Another/Opening Prayer
Gather around the Worship Center and Pray the Lord’s
Prayer.
17. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Loving One Another
Read 1 John 4:16b-21.
Divide into groups to address three questions. Have each
group record their discussion with the intent to present it to
the group after a twenty minute discussion.
Group 1: Who are our brothers and sisters? Are we to love
those who do not believe what we do? Are we to love those
who intend to harm us? Etc.
Group 2: What does it mean to love our brothers and sisters?
Just how far are we to go to show our love and stand by
them? What if they are violently opposed to our values and
faith? Etc
18. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Loving One Another
Group 3: Why to we fear neighbors who threaten us or are
different from us?
After twenty minutes, have each group report to the larger
group and discuss the reports together.
Attempt to formulate a common statement on the command
to love our neighbors. Post the statement in a public area
agreed upon by the group.
19. Welcome the Holy
Spirit!
Bible Study/Loving One Another
According to Scripture idolatry suppresses our openness to
the Holy Spirit. Reflect on ways in which the idols of our day
affect us. Are there ways to act and counteract their power in
our lives?
20. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Bible Study/Loving One
Another/Closing Prayer
Gather around the worship center in prayer.
Each person will place a lighted candle in the middle of the
table and offer prayers asking for the help of the Holy Spirit
to free us for love and fellowship.
21. Welcome the Holy Spirit!
Outreach with Community and
Global Partners
