My Great Brain
By Kaylin Wilson
What are the differences between
        butterflies and moths?
They both belong to the same family called Lepidoptera, BUT…

       BUTTERFLIES MOTHS
 clubby antennae  fuzzy or feathery antennae
 active at day  active at night
 rest with wings upright  rest with wings spread out
What are some interesting facts about
butterflies?
 are cold-blooded
 can fly between 60°-108° F
 have two eyes made up of 10,000 lenses each
 hear with their two antennae
 taste through their feet
 breathe through side of body
How does a caterpillar
change into a butterfly?
Caterpillars
 hatch from
 eggs. They
 are small to
 begin with.
These are my
caterpillars.
They grow…….
and eat… and grow some more!!
Now comes the exciting part:
    they’re starting to hang upside-down!
As they
shed their
  skin, a
 chrysalis
  forms.
After all the
  chrysalises
  formed, we
moved them to
their butterfly
 habitat, and
they stayed in
their little tiny
  dorms for a
  little over a
      week.
When they come out,
they pump blood into
their wings. A few hours
later…duhn duhn duhn
duhn…they can FLY!!!

The red you see is not
blood. It is only
meconium, or leftover
color and tissue from
forming their wings.
My pretty
    butterfly:

At the Bean museum, we found a Painted Lady
(like mine) compared to a Monarch.
How and what does a butterfly eat?
A butterfly uses a straw-like tube called a proboscis to
drink nectar. We feed my butterflies sugar-water and
fresh orange. They seem to like the oranges better.
How long does a butterfly live?
 Most butterflies do not live to see their 4
week b-day, because their average lifespan
is 2 weeks. Painted Ladies’ lifespan is 2 to 4
weeks, and mine are 3 weeks old.
Butterflies
 are neat! I
    really
   enjoyed
  learning
about them.
 Thanks for
listening so
  politely.
