In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

10th century as the legacy of
Arab traders who ventured
from the Middle East along the
ancient Silk Road. The Hui, one
of 55 ethnic minorities in China
(along with the Han majority),
have long nurtured a
coexistence with the
Communist Party and is among

5. In Morocco’s capital, the beach is a favorite place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Waves lap in a steady rhythm, marking time, as hundreds of Moroccans wait for sunset to break their day-
long fast.
Stocked with food and drinks, families and friends swarm to the beach to enjoy the Atlantic breeze and,
when the fasting is declared over, share in the iftar meal.
Her face drawn from hours without food or water, Rabat resident Nadia Benani said she came with family
and friends because staying at home can become tiring.
“This beach takes me down memory lane to my childhood,” she said.
Some beachgoers dance and sing Moroccan music while awaiting the call for prayer that announces the end
of the day’s fast. Exhaustion is barely visible on their faces until they collapse on the ground and check their
watches.
Then a cannon booms and a muezzin’s voice rings out.
Hands reach for water and dates, an appetizer for the sumptuous dishes that follow. While some people dig
into their meals, barely taking time to look up, others pray first.
Reda Fedoul, 20, and his friends built a table from sand to lay out their meals.
“We came here to change the atmosphere ... the day goes much better,” he said. “We’re here to create
happiness.”

Fire officials say they've stopped the 90-acre fire
that ignited Tuesday. They credited fire breaks —
areas cleared of flammable trees and vegetation
between forested areas and buildings — for
helping restrain the blaze's advance toward
homes and condos.
Summit Fire Chief Jeff Berino has said the fire
was caused by humans. An investigation
continues.

home to about 10,000 Rohingya
refugees, aid groups say, many
driven out of Myanmar's Rakhine
State by sectarian violence last
year.

said Mohammed Yosuf, 20, who

Yosuf said he fled with his wife,
Sobora Khatun, who was nine
months' pregnant when they
escaped after two months
shackled in captivity. Their three-
year-old son drowned in a river
crossing, but baby daughter Rukia
was born safely.

Although the refugees cannot work

or help push them out to sea. The

the waters to Bangladesh.

shattering ice blocks to preserve the
catch in the searing heat, mending nets

Two in five Rohingyas depend on a family member with an informal
job in Shamlapur, while one in 20 rely on financial assistance from a
family member abroad, a survey by migration research group the
Exchange Foundation shows.
"Rohingyas in Shamlapur are mostly living in makeshift
accommodation and are only occasionally engaged in (illegal and
seasonal) gainful employment," the group said in March.
Some Rohingya women have found work drying fish at a yard in
nearby Nazirartek, for a daily takehome of 100 taka to 200 taka ($1.20

"Yes, it's a better life, as I can work here
with drying fish and I can earn money,"
she added. Spread over 200 acres (81
hectares), the fish-drying yards handle
around 100 tonnes of fish every day of
the peak drying season from September
to May.
Here, under a blistering noon sun, a
Rohingya woman toils over a long
wooden table, sorting pungent clusters
of fish while constantly swatting away
flies and mosquitoes. Others tie up fish
that had been draped over bamboo
poles to dry.
The fish-drying industry generates
annual revenue of about $20 million,
traders and government officials say.

World Cup fever has injected fresh
enthusiasm into the games played on
the pitch in Nueva Union, which
overlooks the capital of some 10 million
people.

nicknames at one another - "Noodle!"
"Babyface!" "Shorty!" - Champi and

that have gathered to watch.

From Monday to Saturday, when
most of the neighbourhood's men are
working, women play soccer or
volleyball on the field. "We let the
men play on Sundays," Alcantara says
with a laugh.
Martha Injusta, 49, a mother of two
who cleans houses for a living, credits
the space for helping her get in
shape. "I used to be really plump,"
she says.

Union is an underdog - home to
hard-working families struggling to
build a better future for themselves
with scant help from authorities.
Lacking access to basic public
services, Nueva Union residents
must pay a premium for water sold
from privately-owned trucks, which
often suspend deliveries when roads
become too slippery to climb in the
winter. Electricity comes courtesy of
hook-ups to a nearby neighborhood,
which also charges higher rates.

The field is the closest thing to a town
square in Nueva Union. It is where the
community celebrates Carnival the
traditional Andean way, by dancing
around a gift-laden tree. It is a place to
trade gossip with neighbors, and the
designated safe spot to gather when an
earthquake strikes.

residents healthy and happy. The star

income neighbourhoods, he points out.

come from here," Cordoba says. "Without
a field, we won't know."
