Traces of migrant crisis fade from
Lesbos beaches three years later
In 2015, Lesbos was the main gateway to Europe for nearly
a million refugees and migrants. Arrivals have slowed
significantly since a European Union deal with Turkey in
2016, but a steady flow is putting pressure on island
facilities. Photographer Aris Messinis revisited the landing
sites.

At the height of the influx, some 5,000 refugees and migrants,
mostly from war-torn Syria, were landing on the island's
beaches on a daily basis. Hundreds never survived the journey
across the Aegean Sea. More than 800 people, including many
children, died in 2015 in the eastern Mediterranean. The
situation quickly reached emergency proportions for
beleaguered Lesbos as authorities tried to regulate the flow,
register the exhausted survivors, and find shelter for them.

Gambian. They had worked together in
the fields to make money to send

African migrant laborers gesture during a

accidents, near Foggia, Italy. Rather than
employing pickers directly and putting them
on regular contracts, farmers turn to
caporali, or gangmasters, who gather the
laborers from various camps and ghettos
that dot the countryside and drive them to
the fields in overcrowded vans. These
middlemen hand out the wages, keeping a
handsome share for themselves, migrants
say. Several workers said that although they
had signed contracts that promised them
more than 5 euros ($5.71) an hour, in the
end they got between 3.0-3.5 euros.

temperatures soar to 40 C (104 F) on the bleak
Puglia plains, which lie far from the tourist trail.

Jittery Venezuelans on Friday rushed to

preparation for a monetary overhaul
that will remove five zeros from prices
in response to hyperinflation that has
made cash increasingly worthless.
Shoppers sought to ensure their homes
were stocked with food before the
measure decreed by President Nicolas
Maduro takes effect on Monday, on
concerns that confusion among
merchants and overtaxed banking
systems could make commerce
impossible.

Inflation hit 82,700 percent in July as
the country's socialist economic model
continues to unravel, meaning
purchases of basic items such as a bar
of soap or a kilo of tomatoes require
piles of cash that is often difficult to
obtain.
"I came to buy vegetables, but I'm
leaving because I'm not going to wait
in this line," said Alicia Ramirez, 38, a
business administrator, leaving a
supermarket in the western city of
Maracaibo. "People are going crazy."

The change appears unlikely to
generate the chaos of December 2016
when Maduro removed the largest
note in circulation without providing a
replacement for it. That led to protests,
lootings and hundreds of arrests as the
country was effectively left without
legal tender.
Traffic was light in the capital of
Caracas on Friday as shopkeepers
hunkered down ahead of the overhaul.
Major cities around the country looked
as though it was a national holiday.

Maduro, who has said the country is
victim of an "economic war" led by
political adversaries, said the measure
would bring economic stability to the
struggling OPEC nation.
His critics have said the move is little
more than an accounting maneuver
that would do nothing to slow soaring
prices. They blame inflation on failed
socialist policies and indiscriminate
money printing.
Because many transactions now
happen via debit cards over point-of-
sale terminals, many worry that the
change - which banking industry
leaders have said was carried out too
quickly - could collapse financial
networks.

Maduro has declared a public holiday for Monday,
when a new set of bills will be introduced with the
lower denominations. Internet banking operations
will be halted for several hours starting on Sunday
evening.
"I don't understand this monetary conversion, the
government has not explained how it will work or
what salaries will be," said Yuraima Galaviz, who
was shopping in the western city of San Cristobal.
"How are we supposed to buy things if we haven't
even seen the new bills?"

The primary difference between the
upcoming change and Maduro's
2016 currency decision is that in
this instance, most of the current
ones will coexist with the new
notes for an undetermined period
while the new bills come into
circulation.
That will in some circumstances
leave consumers in the confusing
situation of having to use old bills
with face value of 1,000,000
bolivars to make purchases valued
at 10 bolivars in the new
denomination.

Tamara and Yuri Baikov knew it was time to
move away from their village when one of
their ducks wandered into a neighbour's plot
of land, only to return with a wire deliberately
threaded through its beak.
Since then, the husband and wife have lived
for more than a quarter of a century in a
primitive hut in a forest in northeastern
Belarus, close to the Russian border.

"There are no people - there is
no conflict," said Tamara Baikov,
who says she loves weeding her
vegetable patch and would
rather plough a hectare of land
than venture to a city.
Life is simple for the two 69-
year-olds. There is no electricity,
so they read by torchlight. They
take the water they need from
the river and cook with a wood-
burning stove.

them with meat and eggs. Their
goats give them milk and cottage
cheese. Manure is their only fertiliser
for growing potatoes and

contact with the outside world.
She brings any additional supplies
they might need from a store, and
also sells their produce to
generate some income.
"Our Veronika sells all this in
neighbouring Russia. Plus a
pension, we have enough to live
on," Yuri said. "We cannot leave
our animals and birds even for a
day - and we don't want to."

They live on a small farm they
built in 1992. The nearest
Belarussian village, Yukhovichi,
is 15 km (9 miles) away, while
Russia is a few hundred metres
across the river.
They used to live in Yukhovichi
as farmers, keeping cows and
poultry. But dwelling near other
people did not suit them -- the
injured duck was one example.

In late 1991, the local authorities gave them a
piece of land in the forest and one night in
May 1992, they left together with Veronika,
five cows, some groceries, tools and nails.
They spent the first few nights under a linden
tree, covering themselves in plastic sheets for
warmth.
Veronika grew up and eventually moved
beyond the river to a village in Russia called
Davostsy. She now has a 16-year-old daughter
of her own called Angelina.

and Peru will soon be required to
show their passports, rather than
national identity cards, the
Ecuadorean government and
Peruvian official sources said on
August 16, amid concerns over an
influx of economic migrants.

national ID cards, providing
desperate Venezuelans with an
easier route out of their crisis
