"We are hungry and at home we have
no electricity and our fathers have no
jobs. This can't bring about anything
except an explosion," said a 23-year-
old unemployed history graduate who
gave his name as Ahmed.
Asked about the target of such an
explosion, he said: "Against the Israeli
occupation, because it is bears prime
responsibility for everything, even for
the division between Hamas and
Fatah."

Confrontations between young Palestinians and Israeli soldiers have taken on a life of their
own since Palestinian leaders called for protests against Donald Trump's decision to treat
Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
While Hamas, Fatah and other groups call for a weekly show of strength on Fridays, dozens of
stone-throwers turn out along the border between Gaza and Israel every day, even when, as
last Friday, a protest is called off due to bad weather.

A protester wearing a medical
mask said: "The world must
understand that unemployment is
driving us all towards becoming
fighters. We are not going to fight
Hamas or Fatah, we will fight the
Jews only. We have taken part in
rallies demanding Hamas and
Fatah end their division and
calling for more electricity but we
are not going to the streets to
throw stones at Hamas or at the
Palestinian Authority."

Venezuelans ‘loot to eat’ amid economic tailspin
The cab of Carlos Del Pino’s big rig gave
him a nerve-rattling front-row seat to a
surge in mob attacks on Venezuela’s
neighborhood markets, cattle ranches
and food delivery trucks like his.
Shortly after pulling away from the
docks at Puerto Cabello, the country’s
biggest port, he witnessed 20 people
swarm a truck ahead of him and in a
frenzy fill up their sacks with the corn it
was carrying to a food-processing plant.
The driver was held at gunpoint.
“It fills you with terror,” Del Pino said.
He has hauled cargo for 14 years, and on
a good month earns the equivalent of
about $100, enough to support his wife
and two daughters. Yet, despite his
fears, he sympathizes with his
impoverished countrymen, who are
becoming desperate amid Venezuela’s
widespread food shortages and sky-high
inflation.
“They have to loot to eat,” he said.

Sporadic looting, food riots and protests driven by the hungry poor have surged in
Venezuela, a country that’s no stranger to unrest. But the uprisings playing out recently
have a different face than the mostly middle-class protesters who took to the streets for
months last year in political demonstrations trying to oust President Nicolas Maduro.
“These protests are coming from people of the lower classes who simply cannot get
enough to eat,” said David Smilde, a senior fellow at the Washington Office on Latin
America, who has spent decades researching Venezuela. “They want relief, not necessarily
to force Maduro from power.”
Venezuela holds the world’s largest oil reserves and was once among Latin America’s
wealthiest nations. But after nearly two decades of socialist rule and mismanagement of
the state-run oil company, it is being battered by the worst economic crisis in its history.

The surge in violent food protests began in poor neighborhoods across the country around
Christmas, when Maduro had promised that holiday hams were coming in government food
baskets distributed to his supporters.
But many didn’t arrive, sparking protests with small groups burning garbage in the street and
looting. Opposition pundits called it the “pork revolution.” Trying to bring calm, Maduro
ordered hundreds of supermarkets to slash prices to the previous month’s level — a tall order
in a country where prices have been doubling every few weeks.
Repeating a common refrain, the government blamed the absence of hams on sabotage by its
foreign critics, in this case Portugal, which it said was taking orders from the U.S.
“Why didn’t the ham arrive? Because of the blockade against us,” socialist party leader
Diosdado Cabello said on state TV, blaming the “gringos” but providing no evidence.

The unrest has cooled some, but many Venezuelans fear it will
be a temporary lull as the economy spins further out of control.
The International Monetary Fund estimates inflation will reach
five digits this year, while the economy, in its fifth straight year
of recession, will shrink 15 percent.
Barely solvent businesses say they are reluctant to import more
goods, fearing another government-ordered fire sale. As the
currency crashes on the flourishing black market, the monthly
minimum wage is now worth the equivalent of just $3.
Financial sanctions imposed in August by the Trump
administration are only adding to Venezuelans’ misery, choking
off the country’s access to credit and scaring away oil
companies.
Meanwhile, hunger is widespread.

Recently a dozen men stormed a street-side deli in the western city of Barquisimeto.
Surveillance cameras captured them leaping over the glass counter as customers and
employees scrambled out of the way. They wiped the store clean in minutes.
Cattle ranchers say at least two farms have been raided by people who slaughtered cows. A
video on Twitter shows a dozen men in the state of Merida killing a cow with rocks and a
machete, one shouting: “We are hungry.”
In the first half of January, there were at least 110 incidents of looting, more than five times
than in the same period a year earlier, says the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, a
non-governmental group that tracks unrest.
Food and the cash to pay for it are more difficult to find, especially outside the capital of
Caracas. And even when people have money, prices are often beyond their reach, with the
inflation rate soaring above 2,600 percent in 2017, the opposition- controlled National
Assembly says.

Looting is part of a wider trend in
hunger-related crimes, said
Roberto Briceno Leon, director of
the Caracas-based Venezuelan
Observatory for Violence.
Street gangs are luring poor
children as young as age 9 with
food, he said. Standing in as a
lookout during a burglary used to
earn a recruit Nike shoes or
Wrangler jeans. Now, they get a
McDonald’s hamburger, he said.
Briceno Leon adds that some
hungry people unable to buy
groceries steal food by eating it
inside stores. Men riding
motorbikes increasingly yank bags
of food away from customers who
have stood in line for hours,
spending what little money they
had.
“It’s not just that you do not have
money,” he said. “There’s little
money to shop with and few
products.”

The 30-year-old Rohingya Muslim, who
has been slowly rebuilding a shadow of

“They have been killing Muslims for a long time now,” he said. “We run and come to
Bangladesh. Then we go back. We come back to Bangladesh, and go back again. They
continue the killings.”
Younus first fled with his family in 1991 as a 4-year-old, when his parents joined a wave of
250,000 Rohingya escaping forced labor, religious persecution and attacks from Buddhist
mobs in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state, where most Rohingya live. Three years later,
the family returned home, fooled, he says, by the promises made by the U.N. refugee
agency and Myanmar’s government.
Sixteen years later, Younus found himself again fleeing for his life as Myanmar soldiers
and Buddhist mobs unleashed a brutal retaliation after a Rohingya insurgent group
attacked dozens of police posts on Aug. 25.

Under heavy international criticism of what U.N. and U.S. officials labeled “ethnic
cleansing,” Myanmar signed a repatriation deal with Bangladesh to start sending the
refugees back this Tuesday.
According to the deal, those who return will first live in transit camps before eventually
going back to their villages. But the plan has been delayed after a last-minute
announcement by Bangladesh officials, who said they still have to draw up lists of refugees
and complete the process of verification. They have not said how long the delay will last.
They also reiterated that all returns would be voluntary.
On Tuesday, Myanmar again promised it was ready to begin accepting the Rohingya. But
the refugees say they have been on this road before.

“I kept going back because I still have love for my country in my heart,” said Abdul Gaffar,
a 50-year-old who fled spasms of violence in Myanmar in 1978, 1991, and last year.
“They take us back saying they will give us everything, but don’t give us anything,” he
said. “They say they will meet our demands, but they don’t. The government cheats us
after taking us back.”
The Rohingya trace their history before modern borders were drawn, and have long lived
and traded on both sides of what is now the Myanmar-Bangladesh frontier. They have
also long been a persecuted minority in Myanmar.
While the recent exodus of Rohingya has spawned one of the largest refugee crises in the
world, smaller groups of Rohingya have been fleeing earlier waves of violence since the
late 1970s. They are widely derided in Myanmar as “Bengalis,” illegal migrants from
Bangladesh, and have long been treated as outsiders by the Buddhist majority. In 1982,
nearly all Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship rights.

Even if some Rohingya are able to return home, many probably won’t recognize what they
left behind. Rights groups have described how hundreds of villages across Rakhine state
were set on fire after troops and mobs descended to chase out the residents. Homes and
crops in the fields were reduced to ashes.
“They gave us back our land but didn’t rebuild our home. This is how we have been living,”
said Younus, recalling when he and his family returned to Myanmar in the mid-1990s. The
extended family lived in a small hut that they pooled resources to build, he said, only to
abandon it when the attacks started last year.
“When the massacre began this time, when they started shooting and killing everyone,
they were chasing after me as well,” he said. “But somehow I managed to escape and
come here. So I have experienced this ordeal twice. I have been in grief all my life.”

As immigration debate rages, 'Dreamers' await their fate
March 7, 2018 Pictures of the day - Jan.24 - Jan.29, 2018 122
As U.S. President Donald Trump and congressional leaders discuss the fate of some 700,000
immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children, the young people whose lives
hang in the balance fret about their future.
Reuters spoke to five people covered by the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals,
or DACA, program. Many older members of the group, nicknamed "Dreamers," balance college
classes and jobs amid a looming March 5 deadline set by Trump to repeal the program unless
Congress preserves it.

"I knew DACA was going to be rescinded, or at least I thought it was, the day he won the
election," said Javier Hernandez Kistte, 27, referring to Trump's anti-immigration stance during
the 2016 presidential campaign. Kistte arrived in the country with his family from Mexico City
when he was 8 years old.
Trump wants tighter restrictions on immigration that he deems necessary to improve national
security and protect the jobs of working class Americans. Supporters of the DACA program say
eliminating it would punish people who were too young to know the consequences of their
family's decision to move to the U.S. and remove productive people from the economy.
Last week, senior White House officials outlined a plan that would offer a path to citizenship to
about 2 million young illegal immigrants. The proposal also called for a border wall and curbs on
some legal immigration programs, measures some Democrats have called unacceptable.

Some DACA beneficiaries said
they did not realise where their
families were headed when they
set off for the United States.
"My parents told me we were
coming to Disneyland," said Karla
Estrada, 26. "We did not go to
Disneyland."

Living under the radar and working
illegally, several of the young people
recalled rough, impoverished
neighborhoods, and seeing family
members suffer depression or abuse
drugs.
Barbara Hernandez (center), 26, of

brother who was fatally shot in a
flurry of gang violence.

allowed Hernandez to work in
education, but she quit her job when
Trump said he was rescinding the
program.

The flooded banks of the Seine River in
Paris leave trees and street lamps
partially submerged after days of almost
non-stop rain caused flooding in the
country, on Jan. 27, 2018.
The Seine and Marne rivers overflowed
their banks, prompting authorities to
close several roads and cancel boat
cruises as water levels rose nearly 11 feet
above the normal level. The Seine is
expected to keep rising until Saturday
while other regions threatened are in the
north and east of the country.

leader Alexei Navalny being
detained by Interior Ministry
members in Moscow. Russian police
wrestled Navalny into a patrol
wagon moments after he appeared
at a rally to urge voters to boycott
what he said would be a rigged
presidential election in March. He
was released around midnight
without charges, his lawyer Olga
Mikhailova told Reuters, but would
face court at a later date. If charged
with violating laws on holding
demonstrations, Navalny could face
up to 30 days in prison.

This can't bring about anything except an explosion," said a 23-year- old unemployed history graduate who gave his name as Ahmed. Asked about the target of such an explosion, he said: "Against the Israeli occupation, because it is bears prime responsibility for everything, even for the division between Hamas and Fatah." • 3. Confrontations between young Palestinians and Israeli soldiers have taken on a life of their own since Palestinian leaders called for protests against Donald Trump's decision to treat Jerusalem as Israel's capital. While Hamas, Fatah and other groups call for a weekly show of strength on Fridays, dozens of stone-throwers turn out along the border between Gaza and Israel every day, even when, as last Friday, a protest is called off due to bad weather. We are not going to fight Hamas or Fatah, we will fight the Jews only. We have taken part in rallies demanding Hamas and Fatah end their division and calling for more electricity but we are not going to the streets to throw stones at Hamas or at the Palestinian Authority." 12 JAN 2018. • 24. Venezuelans ‘loot to eat’ amid economic tailspin The cab of Carlos Del Pino’s big rig gave him a nerve-rattling front-row seat to a surge in mob attacks on Venezuela’s neighborhood markets, cattle ranches and food delivery trucks like his. Shortly after pulling away from the docks at Puerto Cabello, the country’s biggest port, he witnessed 20 people swarm a truck ahead of him and in a frenzy fill up their sacks with the corn it was carrying to a food-processing plant. The driver was held at gunpoint. “It fills you with terror,” Del Pino said. He has hauled cargo for 14 years, and on a good month earns the equivalent of about $100, enough to support his wife and two daughters. Yet, despite his fears, he sympathizes with his impoverished countrymen, who are becoming desperate amid Venezuela’s widespread food shortages and sky-high inflation. “They have to loot to eat,” he said. • 26. Sporadic looting, food riots and protests driven by the hungry poor have surged in Venezuela, a country that’s no stranger to unrest. But the uprisings playing out recently have a different face than the mostly middle-class protesters who took to the streets for months last year in political demonstrations trying to oust President Nicolas Maduro. “These protests are coming from people of the lower classes who simply cannot get enough to eat,” said David Smilde, a senior fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America, who has spent decades researching Venezuela. “They want relief, not necessarily to force Maduro from power.” Venezuela holds the world’s largest oil reserves and was once among Latin America’s wealthiest nations. But after nearly two decades of socialist rule and mismanagement of the state-run oil company, it is being battered by the worst economic crisis in its history. • 28. The surge in violent food protests began in poor neighborhoods across the country around Christmas, when Maduro had promised that holiday hams were coming in government food baskets distributed to his supporters. But many didn’t arrive, sparking protests with small groups burning garbage in the street and looting. Opposition pundits called it the “pork revolution.” Trying to bring calm, Maduro ordered hundreds of supermarkets to slash prices to the previous month’s level — a tall order in a country where prices have been doubling every few weeks. Repeating a common refrain, the government blamed the absence of hams on sabotage by its foreign critics, in this case Portugal, which it said was taking orders from the U.S. “Why didn’t the ham arrive? Because of the blockade against us,” socialist party leader Diosdado Cabello said on state TV, blaming the “gringos” but providing no evidence. • 30. The unrest has cooled some, but many Venezuelans fear it will be a temporary lull as the economy spins further out of control. The International Monetary Fund estimates inflation will reach five digits this year, while the economy, in its fifth straight year of recession, will shrink 15 percent. Barely solvent businesses say they are reluctant to import more goods, fearing another government-ordered fire sale. As the currency crashes on the flourishing black market, the monthly minimum wage is now worth the equivalent of just $3. Financial sanctions imposed in August by the Trump administration are only adding to Venezuelans’ misery, choking off the country’s access to credit and scaring away oil companies. Meanwhile, hunger is widespread. In this Jan. 23, 2018 photo, a youth moves quickly to collect grains of corn on the street that fell from a truck that was looted outside the port in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. • 31. Recently a dozen men stormed a street-side deli in the western city of Barquisimeto. Surveillance cameras captured them leaping over the glass counter as customers and employees scrambled out of the way. They wiped the store clean in minutes. Cattle ranchers say at least two farms have been raided by people who slaughtered cows. A video on Twitter shows a dozen men in the state of Merida killing a cow with rocks and a machete, one shouting: “We are hungry.” In the first half of January, there were at least 110 incidents of looting, more than five times than in the same period a year earlier, says the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict, a non-governmental group that tracks unrest. Food and the cash to pay for it are more difficult to find, especially outside the capital of Caracas. And even when people have money, prices are often beyond their reach, with the inflation rate soaring above 2,600 percent in 2017, the opposition- controlled National Assembly says. (AP Photo/Fernando Llano) See these photos on AP Images Looting is part of a wider trend in hunger-related crimes, said Roberto Briceno Leon, director of the Caracas-based Venezuelan Observatory for Violence. Street gangs are luring poor children as young as age 9 with food, he said. Standing in as a lookout during a burglary used to earn a recruit Nike shoes or Wrangler jeans. Now, they get a McDonald’s hamburger, he said. Briceno Leon adds that some hungry people unable to buy groceries steal food by eating it inside stores. Men riding motorbikes increasingly yank bags of food away from customers who have stood in line for hours, spending what little money they had. “It’s not just that you do not have money,” he said. “There’s little money to shop with and few products.” Jan.23, 2018 March 7, 2018 Pictures of the day - Jan.24 - Jan.29, 2018 32

He pulled his semi out of the line, dodging an attack. “Here the problem is just that — hunger. Hunger is killing people,” Del Pino said. The 30-year-old Rohingya Muslim, who has been slowly rebuilding a shadow of a normal life in a sprawling and squalid refugee camp in Bangladesh, is in no mood to return home to Myanmar. After Myanmar expressed readiness to start receiving an estimated 680,000 Rohingya Muslims who fled incredible violence over the last five months, Younus said he would rather die in the camp than go back again to the land of his birth. • 39. “They have been killing Muslims for a long time now,” he said. “We run and come to Bangladesh. Then we go back. We come back to Bangladesh, and go back again. They continue the killings.” Younus first fled with his family in 1991 as a 4-year-old, when his parents joined a wave of 250,000 Rohingya escaping forced labor, religious persecution and attacks from Buddhist mobs in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state, where most Rohingya live. Three years later, the family returned home, fooled, he says, by the promises made by the U.N. refugee agency and Myanmar’s government. Sixteen years later, Younus found himself again fleeing for his life as Myanmar soldiers and Buddhist mobs unleashed a brutal retaliation after a Rohingya insurgent group attacked dozens of police posts on Aug. 25. • 41. Under heavy international criticism of what U.N. and U.S. officials labeled “ethnic cleansing,” Myanmar signed a repatriation deal with Bangladesh to start sending the refugees back this Tuesday. According to the deal, those who return will first live in transit camps before eventually going back to their villages. But the plan has been delayed after a last-minute announcement by Bangladesh officials, who said they still have to draw up lists of refugees and complete the process of verification. They have not said how long the delay will last. They also reiterated that all returns would be voluntary. On Tuesday, Myanmar again promised it was ready to begin accepting the Rohingya. But the refugees say they have been on this road before. March 7, 2018 Pictures of the day - Jan.24 - Jan.29, 2018 41

  • 43. “I kept going back because I still have love for my country in my heart,” said Abdul Gaffar, a 50-year-old who fled spasms of violence in Myanmar in 1978, 1991, and last year. “They take us back saying they will give us everything, but don’t give us anything,” he said. “They say they will meet our demands, but they don’t. The government cheats us after taking us back.” The Rohingya trace their history before modern borders were drawn, and have long lived and traded on both sides of what is now the Myanmar-Bangladesh frontier. They have also long been a persecuted minority in Myanmar. While the recent exodus of Rohingya has spawned one of the largest refugee crises in the world, smaller groups of Rohingya have been fleeing earlier waves of violence since the late 1970s. They are widely derided in Myanmar as “Bengalis,” illegal migrants from Bangladesh, and have long been treated as outsiders by the Buddhist majority. In 1982, nearly all Rohingya were stripped of their citizenship rights. March 7, 2018 Pictures of the day - Jan.24 - Jan.29, 2018 43

  • 45. Even if some Rohingya are able to return home, many probably won’t recognize what they left behind. Rights groups have described how hundreds of villages across Rakhine state were set on fire after troops and mobs descended to chase out the residents. Homes and crops in the fields were reduced to ashes. “They gave us back our land but didn’t rebuild our home. This is how we have been living,” said Younus, recalling when he and his family returned to Myanmar in the mid-1990s. The extended family lived in a small hut that they pooled resources to build, he said, only to abandon it when the attacks started last year. “When the massacre began this time, when they started shooting and killing everyone, they were chasing after me as well,” he said. “But somehow I managed to escape and come here. So I have experienced this ordeal twice. I have been in grief all my life.” March 7, 2018 Pictures of the day - Jan.24 - Jan.29, 2018 45

Many older members of the group, nicknamed "Dreamers," balance college classes and jobs amid a looming March 5 deadline set by Trump to repeal the program unless Congress preserves it. "I knew DACA was going to be rescinded, or at least I thought it was, the day he won the election," said Javier Hernandez Kistte, 27, referring to Trump's anti-immigration stance during the 2016 presidential campaign. Kistte arrived in the country with his family from Mexico City when he was 8 years old. Trump wants tighter restrictions on immigration that he deems necessary to improve national security and protect the jobs of working class Americans. Supporters of the DACA program say eliminating it would punish people who were too young to know the consequences of their family's decision to move to the U.S. and remove productive people from the economy. Last week, senior White House officials outlined a plan that would offer a path to citizenship to about 2 million young illegal immigrants. The proposal also called for a border wall and curbs on some legal immigration programs, measures some Democrats have called unacceptable.
