The U.N. camp near Malakal was
meant to be temporary, said Hazel
de Wet, who runs the U.N. mission
in Malakal's Upper Nile region.
She is cautiously optimistic about
peace prospects in the area. But
before people return from the camp
to their homes in Malakal and the
surrounding villages, security
challenges must be addressed, she
said.
"People came to seek protection,
and therefore, before they would
want to leave, they would want to
be assured of their safety and

Malakal has been site of
numerous battles between
government SPLA-forces and
rebel groups. It has changed
hands many times and has been
almost completely destroyed in
the process.
And for Pakuang, the time to go
back has not arrived yet.

has killed at least 50,000 people,
but those who have fled the
country's second largest city, a
merchant hub turned ghost-town,
are still fearful of going back.

her family of eight in a nearby
camp run by the United Nations,
does not believe it is safe yet to go
back home. Squatters may have
sneaked into her house amid the
chaos, the 42-year-old said.
"There is no peace now. If I go

killed by that person that is still in
my house," Adiemis said, sitting in
front of a registration office at the
U.N. camp, overlooking hundreds
of makeshift houses covered in

guarded U.N camp. Its market is
bustling while Malakal's previously
busy market is eerily quiet. Fish caught

When he visited his village to look for his
house in May last year, he was happy to see
that it had not been wrecked in the
crossfire - but surprised to find it occupied.
The squatters asked him if he wanted his
house back, but he said no. Instead,
Pakuang asked them to take care of his
home until he feels safe enough to resume
his old life.
"I told them: please keep it clean and
please don't destroy it."

Even as he receives the
occasional helping hand
from his 22-year old son,
Miguel Lander knows that
the days of making
charcoal the traditional
way are counted in these
remote valleys of northern
Spain.

Lander is among the handful of remaining
professional “charcoal cookers,” which is
how locals call the backbreaking and
patience-exhausting process of turning
firewood into the lightweight pieces of
carbon.
“One has to earn a living,” says Lander, 56.
Cornered by changing lifestyles and the
competition from industrially-produced
charcoal manufacturers, these days it’s
only restaurants and private households
that buy Lander’s few tons of annual
charcoal production following a centuries-
old tradition in this region.
The future, as he sees it, is far away from
the slow-burning and smoking firewood
pyres.
As elsewhere in the world, the
carbonization of the wood comes after
slowly choking the logs at a constant
temperature, keeping most of the oxygen
out.

But in Vilorio and other hamlets under the
shade of the limestone ranges of Loquiz and
Urbasa, that’s achieved by covering the conic-
shape pyramids of wood with hay, dry leaves
and a third layer of insulating soil.
The fire is then lit through a chimney in the
center of the pyre. Lander then climbs up on a
wooden stair to dig air vents in the volcano-
like structure in order to keep a steady
combustion, which can go on for weeks.
Nowadays, Lander “cooks” in each of these
steaming hills round 1.5 tons of holm oak
wood, the best for charcoal. He watches them
day and night: if burned too fast, all will be
reduced to ashes, he says.
But The size of these pyres used to be much
bigger according to Emilio Galdeano, 78, who
began making charcoal when he was still a
teen.

Galdeano abandoned the trade for two decades, when he
joined scores of other peasants who sought jobs in bigger
cities. But when Basque steel mills downsized in the late
1970’s, Galdeano returned to Vilorio and its surrounding
mountains to keep making charcoal.
“Everybody in the village knew that charcoal-making was
all they could expect in life,” says Galdeano, now 78 and
retired. The hardships of the trade, he adds, were “tough,
very tough.”
Charcoal pyres were part of the landscape and mystery
shrouded the charcoal makers, who before vehicles could
bring the wood all the way down to the valley, spent
weeks or even months up in the mountains tending the
firewood piles. They were often perceived as sullen and
lonesome, but also central members of the community,
providing a basic necessity.
Perhaps that’s why the most famous charcoal maker in
the Basque-speaking valleys is Olentzero, the Christmas-
father-like wine-loving hermit who drops off presents to
well-behaved children _ and leaves charcoal for the
roguish _ when he goes down the mountains at the
height of winter.

makeovers. They bought makeup and headbands
from vendors in the camps, hoping the adornments
would help them look beautiful to relatives they
visited during the holiday.
The girls say it can take them up to an hour to
complete their look. But the process is one that brings
them much-needed joy, given all they have endured.

work in a show titled “Why
Gaza?” at the 30th annual Visa
Pour L’Image photojournalism
festival in Perpignan, France. The
exhibition runs through Sept. 16.

In 30 photos on display, Hamra shows the resilience of people in his
native Gaza, a sliver of land on the Mediterranean Sea that measures
just 360 square kilometers (140 square miles).
Gaza’s 2 million residents have endured 11 years of border blockade,
imposed by neighboring Israel and Egypt after the takeover of the
territory by the Islamic militant group Hamas in 2007. Hardships have
worsened with each year of the blockade, including power cuts for most
of the day, soaring unemployment and a health system on the brink of
collapse.

The festival highlights photojournalism
from around the world in exhibits,
screenings, lectures and workshops. The
event, held in the Mediterranean town
of Perpignan near Spain, draws
photographers, editors and industry
celebrities.
Hamra won the Robert Capa Gold
Medal Award in 2009. He shared the
2013 Pulitzer Prize with three
Associated Press photographers for his
work in Syria.
“Khalil Hamra’s work shines a light on
the human condition in places most of
us will never have the chance to visit,”
said Maya Alleruzzo, the AP’s Middle
East regional photo editor. “He often
does so at great personal risk.”
Hamra joined AP in 2002. He has
covered the Arab Spring in Egypt, civil
war in Syria and the ongoing Israel-
Palestinian conflict.
