3. The face of his fiancee, who was killed in a car bomb near his Baghdad home in 2008, looks up from his
right arm. Four years later, a suicide bomber rammed his army convoy in Fallujah, leaving burns across
70 percent of his body.
He survived both bombings, but was left with gruesome scars.
“People stared at me, and sometimes I felt they were scared of me at the swimming pool,” the 36-year-
old said.
So over the next four years he spent some $2,500 on tattoos, which now cover most of his body. There
is a cross and a staircase, and above it a man representing Jesus flanked by two angels. There are
flames and Japanese letters.
“Through Christian icons, I want to say that there is no difference between Muslims and Christians,”
said Khudeir, who is a Muslim. “The flames express the fire still raging inside me for my loss.”
Years of war and unrest have inflicted physical and emotional scars on countless Iraqis. Aboud Abbas,
who owns a tattoo studio in Baghdad, said around 20 people have come in this year asking for tattoos
to conceal their scars, a 30 percent increase from last year.

hotels and restaurants. It is a
far cry from the village of his

More than 1 million people
have come to Germany as
migrants since 2015 under
Chancellor Angela Merkel's
open door policy. Since then,
migration has divided Europe
and helped propel a rise of
far right parties.

make Germany home, but integration is a
journey with many highs and lows and it
requires more than simply finding a job
and learning German.
One woman who helped him is Chris
Wachholz. They met at the choir and she
later invited him to cook and practice
German at the home she shares with her
husband. A common interest in
motorbikes deepened their friendship.
"Meeting this family was like being given
an opportunity for my birthday. They are
like my ... mother and father," he said.

17. But his immigration status prevents him taking further steps. His
asylum application was rejected and he can only stay on as a
'tolerated person', which means he will not be deported but lacks
secure status.
As a result, it is unlikely the temporary job he has found preparing
food and cleaning at the Lufthansa lounge at Berlin's Tegel airport
will be made permanent.
"I have an apartment here. I know many nice people. If they deport
me I'll lose everything," he said. His fear is exacerbated because his
Afghan ethnic group, the Hazaras, have faced attacks from militants
in Afghanistan.

by Germans but others say they have
experienced hostility. At the same time,
a handful of militant attacks by
migrants have enabled some politicians
to argue they represent a threat to
German society.

has meant new freedom.

to one of the most polluted coal mining
regions in Europe.
From Sunday, Katowice will host a round
of United Nations climate talks, at which
nearly 200 countries will attempt to
agree rules on how to shift the world
economy from fossil fuels to try to curb
rising temperatures.
The meeting comes as the World
Meteorological Organization warned on
Thursday that global temperatures were
on course to rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius
(5.4-9.0 degrees Fahrenheit) this
century, overshooting a global target of
limiting the increase to 2C.

Poland has painful experience of
the difficulty of an economic
transition from coal and even as it
counts down to Sunday, it
announced plans for a new coal
mine in the south of the country.
Its government drew support in
part from those with an emotional
attachment to the job security,
social fabric and national pride
associated with mining that
overlooked the downside for
health and the planet. Chudy at his atelier.

241. Carrying sleeping bags and personal belongings, the migrants tread slowly through the snow in
groups, with some waving: "See you in Europe!"
Croatia's border is 20 kilometers (15 miles) from the Bosnian town of Bihac, where hundreds of
migrants are staying in a makeshift camp waiting for a chance to cross. Croatia is one of the 28
nations in the European Union, while Bosnia is not.
The narrow road winds up the Pljesivica mountain through the forest and migrants must walk for
hours before they reach the Croatian border. With the weather worsening in the past several
days, migrants now face snow and freezing temperatures on their trek, setting off in the
afternoon to reach the border in the dark.
Thousands of migrants from the Middle East, Africa or Asia have been flocking to northwestern
Bosnia for the crossing, and many must try several times before they manage to slip past the
border police.
Impoverished and still recovering from its own 1992-95 war, Bosnia has had difficulties properly
accommodating the migrants. At the migrant camp in Bihac, wet snow is falling, mud is
everywhere and tents offer little comfort from Bosnia's harsh winter.

is "very difficult" and says the
migrants need more clothes and
medicine. But he says they won't
give up their quest to reach the EU.
"We are planning to cross the
mountain, even if it's minus 50
