The 2010 Spring Semester Best Project
The Center for Supply Chain Management Studies at St. Louis University commissions
the Best Team Project Award in each semester as a part of the requirements for the
Advanced Supply Chain management Certificate Program.
The criteria for the Best Project Award include the amount of cost saving through
supply chain, feasibility of implementation of the project, and collaborations.
The winners of the Best Project were recognized at the June 18 Graduation Ceremony.
The following is a summary of the winning project:
The project evaluated the benefit of forward stocking of supply items that had a seasonal
or rotational predicative demand driver. The items considered must have been sourced by
DLA or GSA from a DC in CONOUS. Total logistics costs and customer service were key
elements of the project. A baseline was established for total transportation time and total
logistics costs. The conclusion was reached that strategically realigning stock that met the
project defined demand requirements, with the ability to respond to some ‘spikes’ in
demand, closer to the customer would lower total costs, reduce the transportation time
and better meet the needs of the customer.
The project team members were all USTRANSCOM personnel or contractors working for
USTRANSCOM.

CSCMS NEWS
Covidien and Center’s Collaborative Educational Program
Covidien highlighted the collaborative educational program between
Covidien and Saint Louis University in the Covidien’s Pharmaceuticals
News June 28, 2010 under the heading of;
Saint Louis University Programs Expand Understanding of Supply
Chain Management
Earlier this month, 12 Pharmaceuticals employees graduated from the
Saint Louis University (SLU) Center for Supply Chain Management
Studies certificate programs. The programs help participating
employees better understand supply chain and international trade
management processes. They also help equip participants leverage
supply chain management to improve patient outcomes by getting
products into patients’ hands more efficiently and effectively.
“Anything we can do to help our employees with the most current
information on industry best practices, exposing them to new ways of
solving problems, will help us serve our internal and external
customers better,” says Carla Johnson, Director of Logistics Planning.
Covidien and SLU have a strong relationship in providing top-notch
supply chain management education. In fact, Carla sits on the Center’s
Steering Committee.
“SLU does an excellent job because its instructors get involved with
students’ companies and SLU utilizes subject matter experts directly
from local companies as instructors. These individuals are better
equipped to understand the issues students face and provide hands-on,
practical information in the classroom,” Carla says.
