This letter requests that a proposed Walker Road Pedestrian/Bike Bridge project in Beaverton, Oregon be retained as a top priority for funding from the Federal Stimulus Package. It notes that for eight years the neighborhood association has worked to improve safety on this section of roadway where pedestrians and cyclists currently have to dangerously cross between narrow vehicle travel lanes. The bridge would provide an alternative crossing structure and improve safety and livability. Support for the project is listed from various community groups in the area.

Industrial Revolution part 1: Transportation
New inventions and improvements in transportation methods facilitated westward expansion during the Industrial Revolution. The introduction of steam power to river travel made upstream travel faster for passengers and goods, while canal systems made shipping even cheaper, connecting western farms to eastern cities. As transportation became more reliable and affordable, populations grew in western territories and new states were formed. While roads provided more access than rivers or canals, they were often poor quality and expensive. Rivers allowed cheaper and smoother travel downstream via flatboats and upstream via new steamboats, but flatboat travel was slow against the current. Canals linked western and eastern cities and economies but were very costly to construct.

APWA mid atlantic awards
Sandon Rogers and Helen Gabriel of the City of Suffolk Public Works Department and Parks & Recreation received awards from the American Public Works Association for two projects. Rogers received an award for intersection improvement projects on Bridge Road and Bennetts Pasture Road/Bridge Road and Lee Farm Lane. Rogers and Gabriel received an honorable mention for the Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail, an 11-mile multiuse trail. The projects improved safety and traffic flow as well as providing a recreational asset. Rogers and Gabriel will be recognized at the APWA Mid-Atlantic Chapter's annual conference in May.

The following presentation makes the case for a second, multi-track railroad bridge to be built across the Maumee River near the Toledo Union Amtrak Station.
The current bridge, which is owned by Norfolk Southern, is over a century old and handles well over 100 freight and passenger trains a day. Freight rail traffic on the bridge is forecast to steadily increase in the coming decades and the demand for additional use by passenger trains - both long-haul and intercity commuter rail - is likely to grow in the next few years.
In addition to a potential structural failure, there exists several external risks that could result in a catastrophic failure of the current bridge. These risks include ship collision, bridge-operator error, train derailment and sabotage or international terrorism.
Since there are no practical alternate routes for freight or for the majority of passenger trains traveling east and west between Chicago and the east coast, the bridge is a “single point of failure” for both the freight and passenger rail systems.
The loss of the bridge would pose a logistical nightmare for the rail distribution systems, and if that loss were protracted could lead to a substantial contraction in the economies of the region and nation.
There is a solution. It may be possible to construct a second bridge near the present crossing and do so without disrupting current rail or shipping service. A second bridge would supply additional tracks for freight and passenger rail, plus, it would serve national security needs by providing a strategic redundancy at one of America’s key rail crossings.

The following presentation makes the case for a second, multi-track railroad bridge to be built across the Maumee River near the Toledo Union Amtrak Station.
The current bridge, which is owned by Norfolk Southern, is over a century old and handles well over 100 freight and passenger trains a day. Freight rail traffic on the bridge is forecast to steadily increase in the coming decades and the demand for additional use by passenger trains - both long-haul and intercity commuter rail - is likely to grow in the next few years.
In addition to a potential structural failure, there exists several external risks that could result in a catastrophic failure of the current bridge. These risks include ship collision, bridge-operator error, train derailment and sabotage or international terrorism.
Since there are no practical alternate routes for freight or for the majority of passenger trains traveling east and west between Chicago and the east coast, the bridge is a “single point of failure” for both the freight and passenger rail systems.
The loss of the bridge would pose a logistical nightmare for the rail distribution systems, and if that loss were protracted could lead to a substantial contraction in the economies of the region and nation.
There is a solution. It may be possible to construct a second bridge near the present crossing and do so without disrupting current rail or shipping service. A second bridge would supply additional tracks for freight and passenger rail, plus, it would serve national security needs by providing a strategic redundancy at one of America’s key rail crossings.

North Valleys Transportation Study January 25, 2017
The Washoe Regional Transportation Commission released a draft traffic study that shows growth in the North Valleys will lead to further congestion if measures aren’t taken to address traffic problems.
“Some of the arterials and collectors connecting U.S. 395 and the North Valleys neighborhoods are anticipated experience close to or more than a 200-percent increase,” the report indicated.

The Southern Delivery System (SDS) is a 50-mile pipeline project in Colorado that will provide water from the Arkansas River to Colorado Springs and other communities. Construction of the pipeline involved overcoming geological and logistical challenges, including tunneling under a railroad and allowing ATV access during construction through designated crossings. Community engagement efforts like ongoing resident communication helped mitigate disruption from the 6.4-mile section that passed through 125 residential yards. The project is expected to come in under its nearly $1 billion budget due to contracting the pipeline in sections to encourage competitive bidding.
Summit Parkline Presentation to City Council
On March 2015, the City of Summit initiated a Feasibility Study on the vision of converting the abandoned Rahway Valley Railroad into a rail trail more commonly referred to as the Summit Parkline. The Study develops feasible and economical concepts for a 1.2-mile trail and linear park on the existing railroad right-of-way. The Summit Parkline is a unique opportunity for the City to create a recreational amenity that has potential to be a major local and regional attraction and character-giving symbol for the community.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the long-discussed I-25/Cimarron interchange project was held this week, officially starting construction on the major overhaul. The $250 million project will reconfigure the busy interchange that sees over 150,000 vehicles daily. Work will include expanding I-25 to six lanes, adding lanes, and rebuilding bridges. Project leaders assured the public there will be minimal traffic impacts during the initial phase, though some trails will close temporarily during the multi-year project. Nearby residents and businesses attended an open house to learn more and get questions answered about the anticipated impacts and changes.
BiCounty Parkway Presentation for Congressman Wittman
This document questions the need for and justification of the proposed Bi-County Parkway based on traffic analyses and personal observations. It notes that traffic congestion does not currently exist on Gum Spring Road, which was a cited motivation for the parkway. It also raises concerns about environmental impacts to the local watershed and increased truck traffic through rural areas. Suggestions are provided to instead focus on public transportation improvements and a limited connection between Prince William and Loudoun counties that avoids protected lands.

ARTBA and Industry Allies Urge Funding Agreement for U.S./Canada Bridge Project
The letter urges President Obama to swiftly resolve funding questions for the U.S. Federal Plaza associated with the New International Trade Crossing bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. It notes that the new six-lane bridge will enhance vital links with America's closest economic partner by addressing inadequate capacity of the existing 85-year old bridge. Resolving funding will allow the project to commence, providing thousands of construction jobs and boosting the economy in Michigan and the Midwest. The letter requests that the President make U.S. Customs and Border Protection funds available and name a senior White House official to coordinate progress on the project.

Public comments expressed both support and opposition for aspects of the project such as new noise walls and toll rates.

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- 1. 4/30/2009 Metro Transportation Planning and Development 600 NE Grand Avenue Portland, OR 9723 Fax: 503-797-1930 trans@oregonmetro.gov To Whom It May Concern: This letter is in reference to the request for public comment regarding proposed government transportation projects listed for the Federal Stimulus Package. On behalf of the Five Oaks-Triple Creek Neighborhood Association Committee in Beaverton, I am writing to request that the Walker Road Pedestrian /Bike Bridge project be retained as a top priority on the list of projects submitted by Washington County Department of Land Use and Transportation. Problem Statement: For eight years the Five Oaks-Triple Creek NAC has worked to request that safety and livability improvements be made to Walker Road. While the county acknowledges and agrees this section of the road is an important improvement project they have been unable to secure funding. This portion of roadway, at the crossing of Willow Creek, accommodates vehicles only, with very narrow 12quot; gaps between the 45-MPH travel lanes and guard rails on either side of the paved surface. Pedestrians and cyclists are continuingly crossing this section putting themselves dangerously at risk for injury in order to pass between NW Cambray and NW 174th terrace due to a lack of alternative crossing structures along either side of the road. Side walks abut both sides of the Willow Creek south culvert where the project bridge is proposed for placement. This is only a limited, stop-gap solution to a portion of a much more serious problem of pedestrian safety and impediment along the Walker Rd corridor. As a group of concerned citizens for the safety and well being of our neighbors we therefore respectfully request this project be approved for funding.
