A certified professional coach based in Virginia Beach, Talya E. Gershon founded Coastal Virginia
Consulting, LLC, to offer specialized resiliency and psychological health training for a variety of
clientele including, medical providers, entrepreneurs and athletes. Talya E. Gershon develops
individualized treatment plans for each client, helping them “level up” using tools such as yoga,
meditation, and journaling.
Journal Writing to Benefit Mental Health
Journaling can be an effective strategy in reducing stress, as well as in setting and achieving
personal goals. Because writing utilizes the analytic left side of the brain, it frees up the brain’s
creative right hemisphere. Journaling has been proven to boost mood, improve memory, reduce
feelings of depression, and even improve immune function. Simply putting words on paper can
clarify important connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, helping people feel more
comfortable with inhibited emotions. Journaling can detect unhealthy thought and behavioral
patterns and help shift a negative mindset to a more positive one.
Journal Writing to Benefit Mental Health
For journaling to be more effective, it should be done consistently, at least once a day. The writing
can be structured, using templates or guides, or more informal, but should remain private and be
as honest as possible.
