The document compares the performance of a standard moth hydrofoil with a trailing edge flap to a flapless hydrofoil that pivots at the quarter chord. Numerical simulations using a Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) called FS-Equilibrium were conducted and compared to experimental results from testing full-scale foils on a moth. The experimental results showed the unflapped foil had a higher boat speed while the VPP simulations predicted higher speeds for the flapped foil. This discrepancy was due to forces not accounted for in the 4 degree of freedom numerical model and inability to filter maneuvers from experimental data. The literature review discussed previous research on hydrofoil experiments, VPP modeling, and design optimization for moths.
