José de San Martín was an Argentine general who played a key role in the independence movements in Argentina, Chile, and Peru in the early 19th century. After studying military career in Spain, he returned to Buenos Aires and created the Horse Grenadiers Regiment. In 1816, he helped Argentina achieve independence by winning the Battle of San Lorenzo. He then led Argentine and Chilean forces to free Chile by winning the Battle of Maipú in 1818. In 1821, San Martín liberated Peru from Spanish rule. He is considered a national hero in Argentina and the countries he helped free.
Major mexican political leaders since 1824
Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna had eleven non-consecutive terms as president of Mexico and fought for independence from Spain. Benito Juarez modernized Mexico and restored the Mexican Republic. Porfirio Diaz had an unfairly long presidency, jailing opponents like Francisco Madero, until the Mexican Revolution removed him from power.
