John Ernst Steinbeck was an American author born in 1902 in Salinas, California. He had a difficult time getting his early novels published but found success with Tortilla Flat in 1935, for which he won awards. Steinbeck published renowned works like Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 for his realistic and imaginative writings. He died in 1968 in New York City.
