Being able to give and receive praise is one of those qualities that helps us stand out from the crowd. Ask yourself some questions:
When was the last time you gave praise? How did this make you feel? How well was it received? When was the last time your received praise? How did it make you feel? And did you accept it or brush it off? Often we aren’t used to giving and/or receiving praise. It may be a worthwhile exercise to stand back and look at the 'Culture' of your workplace. Does it promote praise and recognition as part of its culture?

The model divides information about a person into four quadrants: open self (what is known by self and others), blind self (known by others but not self), hidden self (known by self but not others), and unknown self (unknown by both self and others). Understanding how one communicates and is perceived in each quadrant can increase self-awareness, improve interpersonal relationships, and support personal and group development. While it provides benefits, some may react negatively to feedback or share information in unwanted ways.

A recent presentation on Conflict Management given by Eleanor Yearwood of Key Talent Partners. The presentation reflects on the use of the Thoman Kilmann Conflict Model to help people be more aware of their - and others' - style of conflict handling, and how better awareness might help us adapt our style in order to have more influence. Adapting our style may also make us more effective negotiators, enhance interpersonal group dynamics and is applicable at every level of an organisation. The model also promotes the idea that different strategies work better in different situations, and by being more aware of our 'default' approach, we can learn to choose the most appropriate approach to give us the results we want in a particular context.
