- In the last 8 years I spent my time building the startup ecosystem in Stuttgart, starting startups and investing in Startups. Three years back more and more corporates started contacting me to talk about startups.
- The last couple of years I went crazy about two specific questions: What the f*** is a startup? What makes it successful?
- This is what most of us have in mind when we talk about startups. Fucking UNICORNS !!!!! Will mean companies worth north one billion dollars! At least that’s all what we want at the end – don’t we?
- But actually this is a startup! Yes! I have realized that this messy ball of wool has a lot in common with a startup than a unicorn does.
- But if this is a startup and unicorn is what we want? The big question ist how do we get frome here to there.
- Well let‘s have a look! First we have to clean up the mess and untangle the wool in an iterative process.
- Then we need the tools and the right plan execute upon. And maybe with a lot of sweat and a little luck, we get our unicorn.
- So all we have to acknowledge is that there are to different modes to operate in. The search mode or startup mode and The plan mode or company mode.
- A startup is _not_ a company it is a phase in the lifecycle of a company! a phase in the lifecycle of a company!
- So when I realized that, I spoke with a lot of people about startups and locked my self away in the basement and wrote everthing down. The result is THE STARTUP CODE – 7 principles for startup success. And I love to share it with you now.
- Successful startups know exactly why they are doing what they do and inspire others with their vision. So they are able to attract talent more easily and build stronger relationships with their customers.
- Successful startups start with a real world problem, they discovered while speaking to potential customers. So they make sure that their solutions fits the problem and not the other way round.
- Successful startups build their products in small and iterative steps and launch a first viable version as soon as possible. So they make sure that their product development aligns perfectly with the needs of paying customers.
- Successful startups fail fast and often – in small and reversible areas. So they make sure that their learning curve is as steep as possible and they are able to fit their product to the market as soon as possible.
- Successful startups organize their value chain from the interface to the customer onwards and value access to resources over ownership. So they make sure they stay as lean and agile as possible.
- Successful startups put their employees first and care about them as if they where family members. So they make sure to attract and retain top talent.
- Successful people give first. So they make sure to always create value for others bevor asking about getting something.
- This ladies and gentlemen this was THE STARTUP CODE I hope it will give you some inspiration for the innovation work in your companies and an edge over your competitors.
