The landscape of the South
African Spaza environment
Spaza shops are small grocery shops, or convenience stores
(micro-enterprises in townships). The name spaza is derived
from the township slang meaning “imitation of a real shop”.
Traditionally, spaza shops have played an important role as
retailers of household grocery items in townships. Basic goods
like milk, drinks, cigarettes and bread are typically sold.
Spazas have provided the basic business foundation for
generations of South Africans, whilst bringing in additional
income to families. The survival of spazas is critical to the
fabric of the townships because so many of the owners are
women.
• More than 100 000 enterprises
• Collective annual turnover of R7 billion (in 2013).
• Approximately one spaza shop for every 86 households
(Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation)
