The common hippopotamus is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal found in sub-Saharan Africa. As the third largest land mammal, males can weigh up to 2,000 kg and have continuously growing lower canines and incisors. Hippos are semi-aquatic, usually spending the day in lakes and rivers with their eyes, ears, and nostrils placed high on their skulls. They can be aggressive and are considered one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, often attacking boats and humans.
Carpet beetle larvae are elongated and golden brown with tufts of hair, while adults are up to 3cm long with brown antennae and scaled bodies. Females lay about 50 eggs on soft lint, which hatch within a week, though the larval period can last 9 months to 3 years as larvae can survive starvation; they wander houses until pupating for one week. Both larvae and adults feed on keratin compounds like fur and feathers, making irregular holes. Control methods include regular vacuuming, drying carpets in sunlight, and using insecticides.
Mantises are insects that come in over 2400 species and generally range from 5 to 8 centimeters long. They have large compound eyes, two pairs of wings, and long front legs for grasping prey. Mantises live on every continent except Antarctica and ambush other insects as predators, though larger species may also eat small animals. They are important ecologically as both pest control and a garden-friendly pesticide alternative. Female mantises may bite the heads off males during mating if hungry.

The document summarizes key facts about hippopotamuses. It states that hippopotamuses can grow up to 4.57 meters long and weigh up to 3,600 kg, with a typical lifespan of 20-40 years. They are herbivorous and graze on up to 60 kg of vegetation per night. Hippopotamuses live in Southern Africa and near the Nile River. Their populations are decreasing in most countries, though increasing in Congo and Zambia. Females give birth after 6-8 month gestation and calves can walk within 5 minutes of birth. Calves face predation from lions and hyenas, while adults have no natural predators due to their large size.
Grasshoppers are small winged insects found on all continents except Antarctica. They live in dry, open habitats with grass and low plants. Grasshoppers go through life stages from egg to nymph to adult, taking around 9 weeks to mature. They are herbivores that eat grasses and leaves. Grasshoppers help control plant growth and are a food source for some animals and humans. Their habitats are threatened by human development.
The document lists the top ten largest animals in the world, including the blue whale which can weigh up to 198 tons and is almost 30 meters long, the colossal squid which lives 1000 feet under the sea, and the African elephant which has the longest pregnancy of 22 months. It provides some additional facts about each animal such as the whale shark having 3000 teeth but not using them to eat or the goliath beetle being able to lift items almost 850 times heavier than itself.
Nuptial flight is an important part of reproduction for many ant, termite, and bee species where virgin queens mate with males. During nuptial flight, queens scatter to ensure mating with males from other colonies to avoid inbreeding, then land to remove their wings and found new colonies. Males are produced to mate with queens, and after mating the males die while the queens store the sperm and use it to fertilize eggs over their lifetimes of up to 20 years.
The Great Horned Owl has reddish brown or gray coloring that helps it blend into trees. It preys on small mammals like rats, mice, and other owls, and is preyed upon by northern goshawks and peregrine falcons. The Great Horned Owl nests between January and February, has a wingspan of 63-146 cm and length of 152 cm.
Rattlesnakes are poisonous reptiles that live in hot deserts in North America and South America, there are about 30 species. They are 2 to 8 feet long and have rattles on their tails which they shake when in danger. Rattlesnakes bite their prey with sharp hollow fangs and inject venom to quickly kill small animals like rats, lizards and birds that they eat. Female rattlesnakes have between 4 to 30 babies at a time that can hunt immediately after birth, and some rattlesnakes can live up to 30 years.
This document discusses facts about giraffes presented by a student group. It includes details about giraffe anatomy like their long legs and tongues, habitats in woodlands and acacia trees, and behaviors such as sleeping while eating. The group learned many new facts and had fun but wished for more time together despite the hot weather. They referenced various sources to research giraffes and reflected positively on their learning experience.
Plains zebras live in mixed herds of up to 100 individuals and have three distinct types distinguished by their stripe patterns. They graze on tough grasses and underground plant parts and can travel over 100 miles in dry seasons to find food. Plains zebras have a ranked social structure usually consisting of a lead mare, several other females and their young, and a stallion that brings up the rear for protection.
This document discusses slugs and snails, which are molluscs that can be agricultural pests. It describes their characteristics, such as being unsegmented and having an open circulatory system. It provides details on common species of snails, like Helix spp. and the giant African snail, and their life cycles. Common species of slugs, such as the common garden slug and black/brown slug, are also described. Slugs and snails can damage a variety of crops by feeding on leaves, stems, fruits and more. They can also spread plant pathogens. Control methods include handpicking, using barriers, and chemical controls with substances like carbaryl and metaldehyde baits or sprays.
Cockroaches are incredibly hardy insects that can survive for long periods without food or water. They have been around for over 350 million years, before dinosaurs existed. Cockroaches can squeeze into tiny spaces, run quickly, and sense movement and vibrations with antennae and leg hairs. There are over 4,000 types of cockroaches worldwide, and New Zealand has a native species called the Kekerengu, known for its strong odor.
Slugs play an important role in ecosystems by eating decaying plant material. They have two pairs of tentacles on their head for seeing and smelling, and breathe through a hole in their middle. Slugs move using mucus and muscle contraction from their foot, leaving behind a slime trail. They can lay 20-100 eggs several times a year in holes or under objects. Slug eggs can lay dormant for years before hatching when conditions are right, from 10 days up to 100 days depending on temperature. Newly hatched slugs immediately begin crawling and feeding at night if humidity and temperature allow.
Cockroaches are highly adaptive insects that can survive on many food sources and in varied environments. There are over 4,600 cockroach species, but only 30 share habitats with humans, with the German, American, Australian, and Oriental cockroaches being the most common pest species. Effective cockroach control requires preventing access to food, water, and shelter as well as regular cleaning and maintenance to deny habitats. Monitoring with traps helps locate infestations and track treatment effectiveness. A combination of residual sprays, non-residual sprays, dusts, and baits applied according to label instructions can help control cockroaches, with baits being particularly effective as they allow slow ingestion of poison. The hippopotamus is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal found in sub-Saharan Africa. It lives in groups along rivers and lakes, coming out of the water at night to graze on land before returning to the water during the day. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs, their closest living relatives are actually cetaceans like whales. They are recognizable by their large size, barrel-shaped torsos, and enormous mouths and teeth.
This document contains information about giraffes. It notes that giraffes are usually 16 feet tall, have unique spot patterns, and live in certain parts of Africa. It states that hunting caused giraffe numbers to decline as they were shot for food by local hunters. The document also classifies giraffes as vertebrate mammals that live in forests in Africa, where they eat grass and can be preyed on by lions or leopards. It concludes by stating that giraffes are related to camels and leopards in their scientific name.
Zebras are a relative of horses found in Africa that are known for their distinctive black and white striping pattern. There are three species of zebra - Plains Zebra, Mountain Zebra, and Grevy's Zebra. The document discusses the extinct Quagga subspecies and answers the question of whether zebras are black with white stripes or white with black stripes through recent genetic research. While zebras live wild in Africa, some people have kept them as pets or riding animals throughout history.
Giraffes are the tallest animal and can grow up to 7 feet tall. They live in open savannahs in Africa and form herds of 3-70 giraffes. Giraffes eat acacia leaves and twigs and get most of their water from their food. They have long necks, tongues, and legs that allow them to reach food and defend themselves with powerful kicks if threatened. Baby giraffes are called calves and can stand within 10 minutes of birth. Giraffes were almost extinct in the 20th century due to hunting but conservation efforts have helped populations recover.
The zebra is a white and black striped animal that lives in Africa, eating grass and drinking water. It has flat teeth for eating grass, hooves to walk on, and lives in both plains and near humans in East Africa. Zebras have live babies that look like smaller versions of their mothers, and protect themselves from enemies like humans and animals by constantly moving around.
Emperor penguins live in Antarctica and eat fish, krill, squid, and shrimp. They are the tallest and heaviest of all penguins and huddle together to stay warm in the wind. Emperor penguins can only be found in the Southern Hemisphere.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
