Your resume needs to be professional and polished because, if not, your application
materials probably won’t get a second glance from any hiring manager.
“A guiding principle of the resume writing profession is that there are no hard and fast
rules.”
An unprofessional resume one that is difficult to read, confusing, covered in errors, or
unrelated to the job the person is applying for will get tossed in the trash right away.
Hiring managers often get dozens, even hundreds, of applicants for each job. An
unprofessional resume makes you look unprofessional as a job seeker and will cost you a
possible interview.

Do’s
Determine your job search objective prior to writing the
resume and tailor your resume for the position.
Customize your resume to match a specific job
description. Use buzzwords from the industry.
Focus on positive results and accomplishments.
Keep a consistent, easily-readable format.
Create strong, action-oriented statements about your
work.
List the most important, relevant items first. For example,
you may decide to move your “Internships” and “Projects”
sections above your “Customer Service Experience”
section
Don’ts
Use templates and tables included in software.
Make general claims (“Good communication skills”)
without backing them up with examples.
Mislead employers about your GPA, skills, or abilities.
Include long, generic objective statements.
Employers won’t read them!
Submit references on the same page as your resume.
They should be kept in a separate document and
provided when the employer asks for them.
4. Do and Don’t of Resume
Within each section, you must list experiences
in reverse chronological order, starting with
the most recent.
Qualify and quantify your experiences
whenever possible. Include numbers and
percentages when possible.
Highlight specific accomplishments rather
than expand on every detail.
Expand on professional, volunteer, research,
and classroom experiences to show
transferable skills.
Proofread your work. Ask the Career Center,
friends, and advisors for help.
Don’t go over two pages. Most
underclassman candidates should have a
one-page resume, but this will depend on
the amount of experience you have.
Put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to
multiple positions that match your career
interests.
Choose the reverse-chronological format
when you should have chosen the
combination format.
Make your resume a nightmare to read by
using weird fonts and headache-inducing
colors. Don’t use cursive fonts, too, or
anything too creative.

concepts in a successful job search is being job ready. A
major frustration recruiters encounter is countless
applicants who believe that having a decent resume,
being prepared for common interview questions and

employer before meeting with them. Obtaining a general idea of such things as the employee
retention rates, business structure, core values, its history and its reputation within the industry
will give you an edge when it comes to sharing ideas that might work to improve some aspect
of their business. Such knowledge can also help you to provide insight as to how your strongest
skills can best be utilized within their existing structure. This kind of insight will impress any
interviewer. It also allows you to see whether each company you apply to offers the potential for
a long-term relationship.

and more on the company website or through a search on LinkedIn. It’s also your
responsibility as a prepared applicant to express confidence in your qualifications for the
job. Understanding the role will give you the foundation you need to convince interviewers
you have the needed skills.
