EJOLT is a collaborative research project between ecological economists and environmental justice organizations that aims to study environmental conflicts around resource extraction and waste disposal. It seeks to increase visibility of these issues and support impacted communities. The project builds off a previous initiative and involves partners researching topics like risk assessment, environmental liabilities, consumption patterns, and related policies. Key outputs include case studies, training materials, and recommendations to link activist and academic knowledge on achieving environmental sustainability and justice.

Presentation by: CBD 4a. Experience with ecosystem-based approaches under the Convention on Biological Diversity The session will present findings from a synthesis report prepared by the CBD Secretariat on experiences with ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation (EBA) and disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR). It will provide opportunities for countries to share experiences and discuss ways to mainstream EBA and Eco-DRR into NAPs and other plans and strategies. Participants will be invited to take part in a group exercise to identify gaps and needs, as well as entry points and opportunities for integrating EBA.

This research intended to determine the performance of the PPP Approach to governance in the Solid Waste Management Program of Batangas City. It utilized descriptive research design involving 393 urban and rural households. The tasks of solid waste collection and disposal were given to a private contractor based on a mutually agreed Terms of Reference. The PPP approach was found efficient in terms of cost efficiency, quick response time, manpower, and minimization of backlogs and effective in four dimensions – promptness, sustainability, equity and progressiveness, and ineffective on adequacy. Rural residents viewed the PPP approach as ineffective in terms of said dimensions. There is significant difference between the perception of urban and rural residents on the effectiveness of the PPP approach. The results of this study would seem to suggest that in developing countries, like the Philippines, it might be necessary to tap the private sector to partner with local government units, so that the management of solid wastes could be done in a more efficient and a more effective way.

Valuation of Ecosystem Services in Development Planning, Guatemala

The project, implemented by the General Planning Directorate (SEGEPLAN) and lead by the Poverty and Environment Initiative (UNDP and UN Environment), looks to integrate the environmental dimension in land planning policies at the national, subnational and local levels; it aims to generate and articulate public policies which contribute to the reduction of poverty through sustainable management of natural resources. To this end, the project led the elaboration of a study on ecosytems and natural capital valuation in the Chiquimulilla channel.

This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable instrument to measure undergraduate students’ responsible environmental behavior towards solid waste management. Data gathered from 418 undergraduate students provided evidence for validity and reliability of the new instrument consists of 34 behavior items on a six point Likert type scale. Results of the factor analysis with varimax rotation showed that items constituting Responsible Environmental Behavior Scale towards Solid Waste Management (REBS – SWM) were grouped under three subscales: (1) Personality factors; (2) Knowledge on action strategy; and (3) Knowledge on issues. Each item had a factor loading of 0.40 or above with its own scale and the alpha reliability coefficient for all of the three subscales was 0.81. Thus, REBS – SWM is a valid and reliable instrument that can be used in the field of environmental and science education and can be used as basis for management of wastes in school setting.

These protections can be relaxed only if further scientific findings emerge that provide sound evidence that no harm will result

13 LINKING CLIMATE ACTION TO LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE A Case Study of Diverse Chicago Neighborhoods Jennifer Hirsch, Sarah Van Deusen Phillips, Edward Labenski, Christine Dunford, and Troy Peters ‘The point is to learn, how does one community start and scale out. Because the best impact starts with individuals on a small level and grows out.’ Community Leader, North Kenwood/Oakland neighborhood, Chicago Over the past decade, environmental anthropologists have increasingly argued for the importance of inserting anthropological arguments into debates on climate change (Magistro 2001, Human Organization 2003, Crate and Nuttall 2009, Baer and Singer 2008). In a recent volume, Anthropology and Climate Change: From Encounters to Actions, Crate and Nuttall (2009) lay out at least three areas in need of new research that focus on human-environment relationships: 1) anthropology’s role in exploring the cultural implications of climate change, 2) facilitating collaborative, community- based projects focused on mitigation and adaptation, and 3) developing culturally- sensitive strategies for communicating climate change to diverse audiences. However, few studies have examined climate change or climate action efforts in diverse urban areas or even in the United States (Crate 2008). This chapter presents ongoing applied ethnographic research being led by The Field Museum’s division of Environment, Culture, and Conservation (ECCo) to understand sociocultural viewpoints on climate change in Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods (The Field Museum 2009, 2010a, 2010b). This research was commissioned by the City of Chicago Department of Environment (DOE) to help them develop locally relevant communication strategies and programs for engaging diverse communities in the Chicago Climate Action Plan (CCAP). Launched by the City of Chicago in October 2008, the CCAP aims to reduce carbon emissions to 25 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 per cent by 2050 by implementing five strategies focused on energy efficiency in buildings, clean and renewable energy, improved transportation options, waste reduction, and adaptation (City of Chicago 2008).
