If we are supposed to be such a smart people, why can’t we do that? It just goes to show talking isn’t everything. I wrote the picture book version with my daughter, and we wanted to make it clear that humans can learn from animals and the natural world has room for all of our needs-not just man’s. “ ~Jimmy Buffett

He changed his smuggling ways when he was offered a simple $25,000 dollars to record an album for ABC Records. He jumped on the opportunity and headed back to Nashville. In 1973, he recorded, “A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean”, for $10,000. Still reeling from his smuggling days the album included songs about misdemeanors and conspiracies including: "The Great Filling Station Holdup", "Peanut Butter Conspiracy", “Why Don’t We Get Drunk”, "He Went To Paris" (which was later recorded by Waylon Jennings). With the remainder of his funs he simply bought a boat. With the success of, A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean’s song, “Why Don’t We Get Drunk”, Jimmy was back recording a follow up album, Living and Dying in ¾ Time, released in 1974. This album included, “Come Monday”, which hit the U.S. Top 30 Hits. Later that year Jimmy released A1A affectingly named after the access road that he used to get to the beach down in Florida. 12. Jolly Mon Sings was written by Jimmy Buffett, Will Jennings and, Michael Utley. It was recorded by Coral Reefer Music in 1985. It was originally released on the Jimmy Buffet album, Last Mango in Paris and released again in his box set on, Boats.  The song is a story and leads the listener into a major feeling. The song includes a xylophone and percussions. There is a string guitar and vocals. There are no modern instruments to cloud the Caribbean feel that you get when listening. The song has a more of an acoustic feel to it. It’s calming and soothing telling a story of a man’s journey.  Because of its popularity it is a song that is often preformed at his concerts. His daughter was his motivation for writing this song and he and his daughter wrote an illustrated book about the, “Jolly Mon.”
  13. 0:00IntroductionThe song opens with a few acoustic guitars plucking and an electric guitar following the same beat. It’s a quadruple/simple. The guitars really set the tone for the whole song. You can tell from the upbeat rhythm that it is in Major. There is this repeat creating a Motif that is recognized through out this song. 0:15 Verse One Guitars and keep play the melody introductions of vocals, a solo by Jimmy Buffet. The first set of lyrics set up the story of the Jolly Mon. These four lines much like poetry have ending rhyming words at the end of each sentence. Tell & Well. Night & Right. The melody plays through even if the voice stops singing.  0:26 Chorus  The words and melody is simple, two lines both starting with woah, woah, woah, in time with the melody. We also have a bass guitar enter into the melody. After line one, we have a four beats and the introduction of the synthesizer. After line two we have the same four beats of the synthesizer. 0:40 Verse Two Start of a synthesizer in verse this gives the song more of a Caribbean feel. Also a soft taping of a bass drum. This is in a four line and also follows form with end rhyming lyrics of star & far, and woes & go.  0:54 Chorus At this chorus to emphasis the Character of the song backline of vocals sing with Jimmy Buffet the last part of both lines of the chorus. They also repeat the words, “Jolly Mon” while Jimmy Buffet moves the plot along. The words and melody are simple, two lines both starting with woah, woah, woah. The first line never changes, but the words in the second line differ slightly from the first Chorus. This action help moves the plot along but also keeps the last word the same. “Ring” his helps the listener memorize and emphasize the lyrics.  1:06 Verse Three Rhythmically the sound is the same as the first two verses. The lyrics change but stay with the same four line form with ending rhymes at the end. Night & Light. Hand & stand. 1:18 Chorus Again this chorus is two simple lines. Again we have the backline singers and again they repeat the, “Jolly Mon”, while jimmy Buffett moves the plot around. Line one doesn’t change. Line two shifts and the ending word changes to “everything”. Because of the poetics of the song it rhymes and is still keeps rhythm with the melody.  1:33 Verse Four Rhythmically the sound is the same as the first three verses. The lyrics change but stay with the same four line form with ending rhymes at the end. Well & hell. Hello & go. 1:45 Chorus Again we go into a simple two line chorus that helps move the story along. The words and melody are simple, two lines both starting with oh, oh, oh. The first line doesn’t change. The words in the second line differ slightly from the first Chorus. This action help moves the plot along but also keeps the last word the same as in the first two choruses and “Ring” is used as the ending word again. 1:56 Bridge We have this instrumental Bridge in the music done in a major tone. The guitars are being plucked in the same manor but the synthesizer is what really sets off the beat. It starts in a soft tone with a build up to a higher tone then goes back to the same melody for six counts.      2:08 Verse Five  Rhythmically the sound is the same as the first four verses. The lyrics change but stay with the same four line form with ending rhymes at the end. Goodbye & Sky. Star & Are. 2:21 Chorus  Again we go into a simple two line chorus that helps move the story along. The words and melody are simple, two lines both starting with Woah, Woah, woah. The first line doesn’t change. The words in the second line differ slightly from any of the second lines. This action help moves the plot along but also keeps the last word the same and “Ring” is used as the ending word again. 2:35 Chorus  We have an immediate repeat of the chorus. A simple two line chorus that helps moves the story along. The first line again has no change. The words in the second line differ slightly. This action help moves the plot to its ending.  2:47 Chorus add on  This starts out with woah, repeated four times with an emphasis and the last one. This happens twice then we have the first line of the chorus.  2:58- 3:16  Vocals end and we have a repeat fading of the same melody we hear in a chorus.
  14. The song was written in its entirety by Jimmy Buffett. It was produced by Norbert Putnam. The song was originally recorded in 1978 on the, Son of a Son of a Sailor, album. What makes this song stand out in my mind is the bell. Yes bell. It has an ensemble. It includes a guitar, percussions and vocals and a harmonica. Unlike other works done by Jimmy Buffett this song includes back up singers. The background vocals harmonize with the harmonica to create a union of the two sounds. The Caribbean feel that is unique to his music comes through in the vocals more then in the ensemble. It’s rhythm has more of a country feel to it. It’s a slower tempo and is relaxing.  This song carries a lot of value to Jimmy, written about himself and his heritage it’s one that is often performed and sung word for word by his, Parrot Heads.
  15. Son of a Son of a Sailor 3:25 0:00 Introduction Guitars playing, one is plucking. At the end of the 16 counts we hear a bell. The bell is really a Cadence. It sound like a harbor bell and sets the tone for the story that unfolds in the verse.     0:15 Verse One Introduction of solo vocals with the same melody playing in the back ground. Four simple lines. No rhyming but the rhythm says constant through out the verse. It’s the same band feel that is common with popular music.  0:31 Verse two Same rhythm and tone and tempo as the previous verse. Also with this verse we have a story unfolding with out the poetic rhyming. 0:47 Chorus  The music tempo slightly speeds up also backline singers come in keeping the melody. They do this with a simple, “ohhh” of the voice. We have the return of a bell at the end of line one. A simple two bell ding. Again this gives you the feel of boat and a harbor adding to the story line in the words. 1:03 Verse three Same rhythm and tempo as before but now we have the introduction of back line singers through out the verse. They pick mid verse and finish with Jimmy Buffett.  1:18 Verse four Same rhythm as previous verses, however to add a new layer we hear a harmonica become predominate. Making a few note off the rhythm we have heard through out the song. This really adds its own Antiphony.  1:34 Verse Five Slightly louder and more powerful then pervious verses also back line singer sing through out this verse. Also the bell ends line four. Again this adds to its cadence.  1:48 Bridge We hear a speeding up of the tempo. A Harmonica is the predominate musical instrument following the same rhythm as the introduction also we hear the bell as the harmonica fades out. This all created the resolution to the tension at the beginning of the bridge.  2:04 Verse six The music slows again in a descending contour to follow the pervious verses. After line three we hear the bell.  2:20 Chorus  Same chorus as before same bell in the back ground. The music tempo slightly speeds up also backline singers come in keeping the melody. They do this with a simple, “ohhh” of the voice. We have the return of a bell at the end of line one. A simple two bell ding. Again this gives you the feel of boat and a harbor adding to the story line in the words.2:34 Coda Two new lines done to the same rhythm. Mush like the introduction this is done in four counts four times. A heavy beat at the beginning. The melody we are familiar with plays to a fade to no sound at all.
  16. This song was originally written in 1977 and released in 1978 on the, Son of a Son of a Sailor, album. The song was written in its entirety by Jimmy Buffett and was produced by Norbert Putnam This song really goes to show Jimmy’s writing abilities. One of the most successful songs off the album it’s a must perform at his concerts. This is his first song to hit pop charts.  The Chorus of the song literally describes what he dreams about on a cheeseburger, onions, mustard, huge hunk of meat, and warm bun. The versus are in a slower tempo. The chorus has a faster tempo. The last chorus is unique because it includes human percussions in clapping to the beat of the drums.  The percussions, kettle drums, in this song really give the song it’s island feel. The guitars and xylophone aid the rhythm. The genre he creates is very unique and I really don’t believe it can be categorized.
  17. Cheese Burger in Paradise 2:50 0:00 Introduction Drums, harmonica and a synthesizer set to a xylophone introduce this song done in a major beat. Six beats repeated three times, ending on a longer note by the synthesizer/xylophone. 0:06 Verse One Same beat as the introduction but with lyrics. Lyrics are done in a four line format. Unlike verse one at the end of each line we get a soft symbol sound done by the drummer.    0:34 Chorus Chorus is also four lines long. Lines one through three are emphasized with backline female vocals singing, “paradise” and carrying it through the whole line. Line four is sung as a solo by Jimmy Buffett.  0:51 Verse Three Same beat as the introduction and the first two verses. Lyrics are done in a four line format. Second line being the shortest and third line being the longest. Ending words for line two and four rhyme keeping the rhythm. Lines one through three are emphasized with backline female vocals singing, “paradise” and carrying it through the whole line. Line four is sung as a solo by Jimmy Buffett.  1:33 Bridge Electric guitar and music take on a more dramatic tone speeding the tempo up just a beat. Also not the cymbals are really being used to emphasis the counts of music. Also at the end of the built up we hear a piano slide. Leading into the Coda.  1:46 Verse Five Lyrics are fast but clear. Almost all back ground music has stopped. You can hear a faint drumming but its falling into beat with the clapping of hands to the melody. The Coda is four lines long. Ending words for lines one and two rhyme and ending lines for lines three and four rhyme. At the end there is a drum roll then straight into the chorus. 2:01 Chorus add on This chorus is six lines long. Lines one stays the same the ending words on lines two and three change. Line four is new. Line five is new. And Line six was the original line four. Lines one, two and three have the backline singers singing “paradise” while Jimmy buffet does the line. The last line is echoed.  2:27 Coda The coda is repeated in the same manor. Lyrics are fast but clear. Almost all back ground music has stopped. You can hear a faint drumming but its falling into beat with the clapping of hands by the band to the melody. The Coda is four lines long. Ending words for lines one and two rhyme and ending lines for lines three and four rhyme. This time however we hear a harmonica emphasizing the beat as the song fades out.
  18. His first hit song and his first song to make it on the radio. Released in 1974 on his Living and Dying in ¾ Time. The song hit the U.S. Top 30 Hits.A simple low budget video accompanied the release featuring his wife (the subject of the song) and his beat up old truck. People are often mislead by this songs music. It is done more to a country beat and lacks some of the Caribbean feel that usually accompanies his musical talents. The song lyrics speak for them selves. Telling a story of a time when him and his wife where separated.
  19. Come Monday 3:09 0:00 Introduction Guitars acoustic and electric set a slower tone. The slower tone is setting more of a minor feel. A synthesizer keeps this slower tone. The synthesizer is set to a high bell like sound. The bell is made at the end of the lines like a cadence.  0:09 Verse One Lines one and two are simple and sung to the beat of the guitars and synthesizer making the bell sound at the end of 16 beats of music. At line three there is a introduction of back line female singer. The contrast between male and female voices adds to the melody.  0:25 Chorus  Arch Contour. Music speeds and builds to the introduction of the chorus with the introduction of drums. The chorus has the continuing of backline vocal staying in tune with the guitars. 0:54 Verse two We slow back down to the same tempo as the previous verses. Now we have the introduction of more guitars playing a slightly different antiphony then previous heard in this song. This guitar sets an arrhythmtic sound.  1:19 Chorus  Same as before. Music speeds and builds to the introduction of the chorus with the introduction of drums. The chorus has the continuing of backline vocal staying in tune with the guitars. 1:40 Bridge Two line fast tempo. This creates a Arch Contour. During these two lines the music speeds after these two lines it slows once more.  2:07 Verse Three Back up vocals same rhythm as previous verses. This guitar sets an arrhythmtic sound.  2:32 Chorus add on  Arch Contour. Music speeds and builds to the introduction of the chorus with the introduction of drums.
