Jimmy graduated from a Catholic Private School and moved to Mississippi to attend the University of Southern Mississippi. Were he studied Journalism. After graduation in 1969 he married Margie Washichek. The pull of music was to strong so they moved to Nashville. There he started working as a Nashville correspondent for Billboard Magazine. He built up the contacts that led to his 1970 debut album, Down to Earth, for Barnaby Records. The record didn’t do much and even though he recorded a second record, High Cumberland Jubilee, with the recording company it wouldn’t be produced tell after he reached star-hood.Image curtsey of google images.
Having no luck in Nashville, he divorced and Buffett turned to Key West, Florida and his beloved ocean. Not being able to find ligament work, he became a pirate of sorts and smuggled to earn a living. He transformed into a beach bum and developed a tropical folk-rock style of music. He changed his smuggling ways when he was offered a simple $25,000 dollars to record an album for ABC Records. He jumped on the opportunity and headed back to Nashville. In 1973, he recorded, “A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean”, for $10,000. Still reeling from his smuggling days the album included songs about misdemeanors and conspiracies including: "The Great Filling Station Holdup", "Peanut Butter Conspiracy", “Why Don’t We Get Drunk”, "He Went To Paris" (which was later recorded by Waylon Jennings). With the remainder of his funs he simply bought a boat. With the success of, A White Sport Coat And A Pink Crustacean’s song, “Why Don’t We Get Drunk”, Jimmy was back recording a follow up album, Living and Dying in ¾ Time, released in 1974. This album included, “Come Monday”, which hit the U.S. Top 30 Hits. Later that year Jimmy released A1A affectingly named after the access road that he used to get to the beach down in Florida. In 1975 he worked with his brother-in-law, Tom McGuane. Followed in 1979 by, Volcano, 1981, Coconut Telegraph, and, Somewhere Over China, in 1983, One Particular Harbor, 1984, Riddles in the Sand, 1985 Last Mango in Paris, 1964, Floridays, and in 1988 Hot Waters. Hot Waters, featured guest appearances by Rita Coolidge, the Neville Brothers, James Taylor and even Steve Winwood but none of these albums made it on the charts. In 1989 Jimmy released, Off To See The Lizard, quickly follow in 1990 by Feeding frenzy, which went gold. It took him tell 1992 to release his box set, Boats Beaches Bars & Ballads, which quickly became one of the best selling box sets of all times. The box set also included a, Parrot Head Handbook. The handbook includes pictures of Jimmy’s youth, and photos of concerts that show the Parrot heads at their best. Buffett went back to speeding out albums and made a new album in 1994,Fruitcakes, which became one of his fastest-selling records. In 1995 he released Barometer Soup, and in 1996 released, Banana Wind. In 1997 Jimmy started working on a musical adaption of Herman Wouk’s novel, Don't Stop the Carnival, with Wouk’s himself. Not having a Broadway producer express interest in the production, it ran in Miami for six weeks in 1997. Not wanting to give up on it, Jimmy released the collection of songs from the production. In 1999 Jimmy released the much anticipated, Beach House on the Moon, later in the year Jimmy released, Live: Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. With the new millennium, Jimmy launched the Mailboat label. That was the start to a series of releases. In 2002 he released, Far Side of the World, in 2004 he released, License to Chill. During 2005 he was also on tour and recorded and released live albums for Hawaii and Boston. In 2006 Jimmy released, Take the Weather with You and two more live albums. In 2007 he continued to release, Live in Anguilla. Feeding Frenzy, the live version in 2008. Late 2009 Jimmy released a new studio album, Buffett Hotel. During his career he has also purchased and ran a bar in Key West. He has a pilot’s license, continues to write books, has a news letter for his fans around the globe, and runs a successful online radio station. He continues to do environmental projects and continues his work with the manatees. There is no end in sight for this singer/songwriter who is currently on tour and in studio. Jimmy Buffett is a character that not only writes about his life stories but has made a living at it. He gets to do what he loves and gets paid to do it. Jolly Mon Sings was written by Jimmy Buffett, Will Jennings and, Michael Utley. It was recorded by Coral Reefer Music in 1985. It was originally released on the Jimmy Buffet album, Last Mango in Paris and released again in his box set on, Boats. The song is a story and leads the listener into a major feeling. The song includes a xylophone and percussions. There is a string guitar and vocals. There are no modern instruments to cloud the Caribbean feel that you get when listening. The song has a more of an acoustic feel to it. It’s calming and soothing telling a story of a man’s journey. Because of its popularity it is a song that is often preformed at his concerts. His daughter was his motivation for writing this song and he and his daughter wrote an illustrated book about the, “Jolly Mon.”

What makes this song stand out in my mind is the bell. Yes bell. It has an ensemble. It includes a guitar, percussions and vocals and a harmonica. Unlike other works done by Jimmy Buffett this song includes back up singers. The background vocals harmonize with the harmonica to create a union of the two sounds. The Caribbean feel that is unique to his music comes through in the vocals more then in the ensemble. It’s rhythm has more of a country feel to it. It’s a slower tempo and is relaxing. This song carries a lot of value to Jimmy, written about himself and his heritage it’s one that is often performed and sung word for word by his, Parrot Heads.

The last chorus is unique because it includes human percussions in clapping to the beat of the drums. The percussions, kettle drums, in this song really give the song it’s island feel. The guitars and xylophone aid the rhythm. The genre he creates is very unique and I really don’t believe it can be categorized.
