Reasons You Shouldn’t Wade In
Floodwater

With climate change and the erratic behavior of storms nowadays, having flash
floods occur in your area has become more common. But people, especially
children, should not jump into floodwater if they can help it. Here are the main
reasons why doing so is unhealthy and can be outright dangerous.

Firstly, just about six inches of rushing water can knock a fully-grown man over. It
goes without saying that the chance of drowning is especially more likely among
children. Also, even when the floodwater has stopped moving, there might be
manholes with toppled lids that can suck people in.
Floodwater can also lead to injury, given the many sharp objects like broken
bottles and cans dragged along by the rushing water. Often floodwater gets
murky, and one would not know what’s under until they step on it. Sometimes
snakes also get carried by floodwater.
Sewage overflow and other contaminants carried by the flood can lead to illness
from infectious diseases. Aside from tetanus from rust-coated objects, chemical
wastes can be in the moving water. Also, raw sewage is germ-infested and
contains disease-causing micro-organisms like E Coli, Hepatitis A, and Cholera.

Stagnant flood pools from recent storms can be a haven for mosquitoes, bringing
their own set of diseases, from dengue to typhoid fever and the West Nile virus.
Lastly, wading in floodwater can get you electrocuted from downed power lines
toppled by high winds.
