Introduction
For this assignment, I went to the museum with my professor. It was a wonderful experience especially since I have not been to a museum for a long time and she was already a member. The museum we chose to explore was The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Because she was a member, I only had to pay $10 for the entrance fee which was a nice discount. When we first walked in, I was overwhelmed because I was excited and anxious to see all the different works of art. The exhibits we saw were Modern Times, Art Splash and Face to Face.
Face to Face
As I start to think back, I did not take any pictures in the Face to Face exhibit. This exhibit had so many people, I couldn’t and would not dare take my phone out because I probably would have dropped and broken it. It’s interesting to have seen so many people since all that was in the room were the artist's self-portraits and brief descriptions. But that is what amazed me, seeing that people still appreciate others and what they’ve done is extremely motivating to me. In our World Cultures textbook, the majority of what was read was filled with cruelty and hate which still goes on today but seeing us as individuals overcome the hatred and honor those in our past is nothing less than a miracle I was able to witness in person. If I were thinking, I could have taken a photo of the exhibit to express the appreciation of today’s society looking back at yesterday’s heartaches and pain.
Art Splash
The second exhibit was called Art Splash. The museum stated that it was an “imaginative play for kids and their grown-ups” which was suitable due to the beautiful vibrant colors and even still-life paintings of light. The two pictures I chose were of Charles Sheeler and Joseph Stella. The Swan, which was created around 1924, was a painting that caught my attention as soon as I entered the room. The energy was warm, welcoming and fun as the colors made the Modern painting come alive. He gives people a sense of hope in the era of the Italian Renaissance which is what many of them needed. In Art Splash, I also admired the painting of Joseph Stella, The Cactus, because I enjoy seeing him show the reflection of the lights in this painting. What really catches my attention is how there are reflections, but it doesn’t show where the light is coming from. If you investigate the picture, the stand-up light isn’t plugged in! He’s really making you use your imagination to figure out where the light is coming from because it doesn’t show light coming from the lamp above the cactus either. These two artists are taking you to different places; Sheeler is taking you to a fairyland while Stella has you in a magician’s house. These two paintings are full of life, and I loved looking at them. (Philadelphia Art Museum, 2)

They would improve the ears if they redid it. For their rotocope task, the student was pleased with how accurate the shapes and background were. They would add more detail to skin and hair next time. In their text-based work, the student enjoyed the obscure text paired with the Hansel and Gretel image and using different fonts and colors in their name text. They would make the Hansel and Gretel text stand out more and use more interesting fonts for their name.
Photo essay
The author visited the Institute of Contemporary Art twice, once with friends and once alone. When with friends, they were able to discuss the artwork and gain different perspectives. When alone, the author was able to focus more on individual pieces. The author found that both social and solitary viewing provided unique benefits to understanding and interpreting the artwork.
Summer work & plan for future
The document summarizes Martha Watton's plans for her second year of art college and beyond. She reflected on her strengths being in drawing and painting based on her first year experiences. For year 2, she plans to focus her projects on illustration in order to build a strong portfolio for university applications in that field. Specifically, she will complete an illustrated EPQ and develop her sketchbook and final piece for it. Her long term goal is to study illustration at university rather than fine art, finding illustration offers more applicable career paths.

- 2. JEFF KOONS “Large Vase of Flowers” 1991 A lot of Koons’ artwork has a timeless creation to it. This is a good example because a bouquet of flowers is something that I feel always inspires people. I do not feel like he has an exact style of work because his work goes from painting to photographs. He is an all around gifted artist.
- 3. I was inspired to blow up the flower that stood out to most to me in the flowers from Koons’ art. That blue flower was one of the smaller flowers in the vase but its bright color stood out to me the most, making a statement. I used oil pastels to create this.
- 4. UMBERTO BOCCIONI “Unique Forms of Continuity and Space” 1913 I chose this piece because it is something that is timeless and similar to work that Koons’ has previously done. In a lot of his other work he seemed to like using gold and this is a perfect example of something I think he would have done.
- 5. JUDY PFAFF “Moogie Cha” from “Apple and Oranges” 1986 She has a funny logic kind of style. Looking at her work it is kind of confusing with all of the different things going on. She likes to throw in a bunch of different things to make a masterpiece. For example this one has stripes and polka dots involved and everyone always says they do not go together, but she proved them wrong.
- 6. I was mainly inspired by the polka dots in her work so I started off with them. I love the different color bubbles. I then wanted to add that random funny feel that Pfaff has to her work. I did this by starting a checkerboard that doesn’t even match up, the lines, and the pattern down at the bottom. I wanted this piece to have that random funny feel about it that she has with her work.
- 7. WASSILY KANDINSKY “Sketch for Composition VII” 1913 I choose this picture because when I first looked at it I had the same thought in my head, “What is that?” I felt with this you had to look more into what the picture is representing and not just see it for a bunch of things put together.
- 8. WATON FORD “Blue Matari” 1998 Ford uses his imagination with animals. The animals are sometimes in non realistic setting or they some times are. He looks into the mind of animals and what they might be thinking.
- 9. I was inspired to get into the mind of my animals. My dogs are clearly thinking about something. Emerald, the one on the left looks like she has something on her mind. While Lilly is licking her licks because she is thinking about something yummy. When I was taking this photo I was trying to get a picture of Lilly when she sits up on her back legs and begs, but I really liked how I caught her in the moment of licking her lips. I felt this shows that animals do have things on their minds, but you just have to imagine what they are thinking.
- 10. GIACOMO BALLA “Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash” 1912 I felt this represented Ford’s work because of the animal involved. He used a lot of animals in his pieces. This piece can relate because you can try imagine what this dog is thinking why on his walk. He is moving fast so possibly they could be running, or he just has a lot of excitement. This gives me the opportunity to imagine what an animal is thinking just like in Ford’s work.
