Population growth in the eastern United States pushed Americans to migrate westward in the 1800s-1850s. As more people crowded into the east, some began moving west along the Ohio River by steamboat to less populated areas, fulfilling the idea of Manifest Destiny to expand across North America. A variety of people, including Indians, whites and blacks, migrated westward as population numbers increased in the east.
