The North believed the United States was an indivisible union, not a collection of states that could secede. Washington D.C. was the capital of the North during the Civil War and home to the U.S. President. Ulysses S. Grant was a major general for the North who ultimately won the war in favor of preserving the Union. The Union Flag during the Civil War had fewer stars than the modern flag because there were not yet 50 states.
