The first pioneers came to Westerville using an Indian trail that became 161. More than 150 years passed before the completion of I-270 at Westerville Road. Vehicles changed from horse and oxen-drawn wagons to cars, trucks and motorcycles fueled by gas, diesel and electricity. The arrival of the train and trolley were greeted with great excitement by Westerville citizens but both disappeared as new forms of transportation became popular.

Meet Emily Smith, resident of Friendship Village. She was born
in Dover, OH, grew up in New Philadelphia and Navarre and has
been a resident of Columbus since 1966. She is an Otterbein grad-
uate and then received her Masters at Illinois University. To pay
for her graduate degree, she worked summers at Nickles Bakery.
The only child of a minister, Emily grew up going on shut-in
visits with her father. Once she told the family of a shut-in that
she was praying for a bicycle (her mother wasn’t keen on the idea).
A few months later, the man brought her a brand new bike. She
road her bike everywhere, often downtown to run errands as well
as a daily visit to the post office to retrieve their mail.
At the age of 53, she retired as a school librarian from
Columbus schools, due to health issues. She has a genetic disease
that hardens the kidneys, a disease that killed her father when he
was only in his 50’s. She eventually got a kidney transplant. Now
she proudly knits shawls for Life Line of Ohio. These shawls are
given to the donor families.
Although retired from her job, Emily keeps extremely busy.
She is church organist at First Presbyterian Church in
Reynoldsburg. She learned how to play a pipe organ during her
senior year of high school. She also keeps busy at Friendship
Village. She is vice president of the Women’s Club, works at the
Village store, is on the welcoming committee, participates in
Vespers and Wii bowling. And, of course, she loves to read.
When she was younger, she often traveled. Her favorite trip was
to Switzerland where her grandmother was born.
Emily says she is “spoiled” by books being delivered to her
door. We look forward to spoiling her for
years to come. Thanks Emily for sharing your
story!

WHAT’S NEW?
Happy New Year from Outreach Services! Time has flown
and the holidays are again behind us. Time also flies between our visits,
doesn’t it? And sometimes it is difficult to get through all that wonderful
library material you have received.
Just a reminder that many of the items we deliver to you can be
renewed! That includes 14 day and 28 day books and media material.
However, even if an item seems old, it is possible that someone else is
waiting for it. So PLEASE ask us if you can renew an item rather than
just keeping it. Because we only visit once a month, if you retain an
item that has holds on it, those who are on reserve have to wait a very long time to get
their request. If we cannot renew something you have, we can
place a hold on it so you can have it again at a later date.
Search Ohio/Ohio Link items can only be renewed once at
the very most so please keep that in mind. Thank you!
