Social media is such an intrinsic part of the way students interact, it is natural that academic libraries would consider making services available through these communication channels. For the benefit of academic libraries, ProQuest commissioned a study by Hanover Research to gauge the current and potential uses of social media for academic research. We present the findings here, along with some top-line recommendations to assist libraries in executing an effective social media strategy.

Presenters: Katie Gibson John Millard, University Libraries Miami University Course management software (CMS) used in higher education is often multi-layered, poorly organized, and difficult for students to navigate. At Miami University, six librarians teaching different sections of a course in the Interactive Media Studies department bypassed institution-supported course management software in favor of Ning.com. This breakout session will present lessons learned from this experiment, discuss pros and cons of abandoning institutionally supported systems, and explain how the adoption of this new technology affected teaching.

Research has demonstrated that these students are more likely to do well and graduate high school. There is not a universal approach in meeting the learning needs of all students. Students have different learning styles that promote higher success in the classroom compared to other learning styles. Literature has demonstrated African American students’ diverse learning needs and preferred learning styles were not consistently being addressed in the classroom. Hence, some African American students were not learning and began to perform at a lower grade level. The presenter will provide suggestions of various technology-enhanced instructional strategies and its potential impact on African American student achievement. Additionally, the presenter will provide educators with several implications that can be applied to their current classroom setting.

In the era of increased educational accountability, students are expected to demonstrate a level of proficiency on state administered, standardized tests. The purpose of this presentation is to address standardized testing issues surrounding the academic achievement gap among African American students. Research has demonstrated that placing students in certain academic tracks merely on their standardized test scores can have negative effects on students’ ability to excel in the classroom. The presenter will address other concerns, such as stereotype threat, that African American students face while taking high stakes test which can lead to poor performance.

The New Jersey Department of Education sought to develop an online professional learning community for 150,000 educators in nearly 600 school districts. The authors present a post-project analysis of the project developed in support of Face-to-Face, Blended, and fully online learning situations. This project created an “Online Professional Learning Exchange” with blended online learning modules and was funded with over two million dollars. The greatest strength of the OPLE tool is to aid the state of NJ to shift their training from expert delivery of knowledge in a face-to-face format towards the Community of Practice. The paper presents a Systematic Review of the Literature, the analysis of Professional Learning and Training Methods, a description of the methods to create Blended Learning Modules focused on video, written materials, polls, and discussions. Through this integrated approach, the OPLE allows for user mastery of concepts that enhance their ability to provide more efficient and effective instruction to their students. Finally, the paper concludes with the results and implications in light of the current world developments and their impact on education.
