James Joyce was an Irish writer considered one of the greatest. He studied to become a Jesuit priest which influenced his respect for tradition shown in his works set in his native Dublin. Joyce centered his stories on ordinary people who experience epiphanies, or sudden insights into their true nature, particularly in his most famous works Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses, which was banned for its subject matter but made him famous.
