2. Shri Jagannath Puri Temple is one of the
most impressing monuments of the Indian
State Odisha, was constructed by a famous
king of Ganga Dynasty Ananta Varman
Chodaganga Deva dating in the tenth
century.

3. The massive temple complex encompasses
an area of more than 400,000 square feet
(37,000 m2) and is encircled by a fortified
wall. Meghanada Pacheri is the name given to
this twenty-foot (6.1 m) high wall. Another
wall, referred to as kurma bedha, encircles
the main temple. At least 120 temples and
shrines are located there.
Structure Of Jagannath Temple
4. The main temple is a curvilinear structure crowned by
Vishnu’s’srichakra’ (an eight spoked wheel).
Additionally referred to as the “Nilachakra,” it is
crafted from Ashtadhatu and is considered sacred.
The temple of Shri Jagannath is the tallest of all the
temples in Orissa. The temple tower was constructed
on a raised stone platform and towers 214 feet (65
metres) above the inner sanctum, which houses the
deities. It dominates the surrounding landscape. Like
a ridge of mountain peaks, the pyramidal roofs of the
surrounding temples and adjoining halls, or
mandapas, rise in steps toward the tower.
5. Linearity of Spaces
Jagannath temple has a linear arrangement of spaces.
The various halls are the Bhogmandapa, a Natmandir, a
Jagamohana and a Garbha griha in the same order. Just
before the south gate is present a small bhajan kutir.
The famous Peja Nala discharges the waste from the
temple kitchen, fed on by destitute and animals.
Opposite the south gate stands the 22 feet tall Arun
stambha, with an ornately decorated base. The pillar is a
chlorite monolith, with sixteen facets. The base also has
carvings of animals and mythical creatures.
6. Four Distinct Sections
The temple is divided into four distinct sections,
namely –
1. The Deula, Vimana, or Garba griha (Sanctum
sanctorum) is the location of the triad deities
on the ratnavedi (Throne of Pearls). In the

2. Mukhashala (Porch in front)
3. Nata mandir/Natamandapa, also referred to
as the Jagamohan (Auditorium/Dancing
Hall).
4. Bhoga Mandapa (Offerings Hall).
