This document provides an overview of the genre of rock music, including its origins in the 1950s, conventions commonly associated with rock, and examples of influential rock bands. It discusses how rock music centers around electric guitars, bass, and drums and is typically song-based with verse-chorus structure. Common conventions of rock discussed include the "sign of the horns" gesture, headbanging, band formations, emphasis on live performances, and themes of rebellion. Subgenres like heavy metal, indie rock, and psychedelic rock are also covered. Examples of iconic rock bands like The Beatles, Guns N' Roses, Elvis Presley, KISS, and Queen are then analyzed in terms of how they did or did not
The document discusses the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, a Republican Senator from Wisconsin known for making unproven claims of Communist infiltration in the United States government. It describes how McCarthy gained national attention in 1950 by claiming there were Communists in the State Department, though he could not provide any names. This led to widespread investigations and hearings on suspected Communist activities, known as McCarthyism. By 1954, McCarthy had been censured by the Senate for bringing dishonor to Congress with his actions. His accusations and tactics are still used today to describe unfair political witch hunts.
Rock music originated in the early 1950s and saw many developments over the following decades. Some key events and genres included Elvis Presley's breakthrough in 1954, the Beatles' success in the 1960s, the rise of subgenres like folk rock and psychedelic rock in that era, and hard rock and heavy metal becoming popular in the 1970s led by bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. The 1980s saw many extreme metal genres like thrash metal and the rise of alternative rock. Grunge became influential in the 1990s. Rock has had social and political impacts and influenced various cultures and movements over the years.

RESEARCH: A2 Media Music Video Analysis (Alternative Genre)HollyRileyA2
I did not find any explicit intertextual references to other films, TV programs or music videos in the "We Are Young" music video by Fun. The video focuses on depicting the song's lyrics through a narrative of a chaotic party scene. While it utilizes some common music video techniques like close-ups, slow motion and performance shots, it does not directly reference or allude to any other existing media texts.
The document provides a history of rock music and discusses some of its origins and evolution over time. It asks who invented rock n' roll and lists several black and white musical pioneers that contributed to its development. It also discusses what is considered the first rock n' roll song. The document discusses the alternative rock/indie rock music genre and audience. It provides information on:
- The genres emerged from independent music in the 1980s and grew in popularity in the 1990s, distinguishing itself from mainstream rock.
- The audience enjoys a variety of styles and does not fit stereotypes, often dressing uniquely but not extremely. They tend to be "hipsters" and teenagers who grew up with indie rock in the 2000s.
- The Killers have had particular success in the UK where the genres are more popular, showing their UK audience is likely largest.
- Music videos in the genres use elements of both narrative and performance to engage audiences interested in the music rather than images
This document provides an overview of the indie/alternative music genre. It discusses the origins of the term "indie" and how it differentiated between major label and independent artists. Over time, indie came to refer more to a style of music and various subgenres emerged. The genre has been charted in the UK since the 1980s and was originally dominated by acoustic songs. However, styles became more varied over time. Several influential artists that helped shape the genre are discussed, including The Smiths, Pixies, and R.E.M. Common conventions for indie music videos include low-budget settings, emphasis on live performances, inclusion of narratives, and stylistic elements like close-up shots and black and white filters
Radiohead formed in 1985 in Abingdon, England. They gained success with their albums The Bends (1995), OK Computer (1997), and Kid A (2000), which took their sound in a more experimental direction. Radiohead left their record label EMI in 2007 and allowed fans to pay what they wanted for their album In Rainbows, proving their independence from mainstream labels. Their unconventional approach to music and disinterest in money-making demonstrates their focus on creative expression over commercial success.

Plastic pop refers to a genre of pop music that emphasizes appealing to youth audiences. It uses bright colors and simple love songs along with incorporating influences from other genres like rock and classical. Plastic pop artists are generally portrayed in stereotypical fashions to appeal to their target audiences and are promoted through talent shows on television. Influential figures in plastic pop like Simon Cowell and pop stars who serve as judges further promote new artists and the genre. Examples of successful plastic pop artists are Britney Spears and the Sugababes, who have adapted their image over time to broaden their appeal while maintaining associations with pop music. Plastic pop artists heavily utilize various forms of media to promote themselves and their music to
The document discusses music genres and subgenres. It states that rock is a broad genre that encompasses more specific subgenres like punk, indie, and metal. Describing a band's subgenre, rather than just their top genre, provides more insight into their sound. It also notes that understanding an artist's genre and subgenre is important for marketing, promotion, and finding an appropriate label, as different genres have distinct fan bases and conventions. The passage then focuses on pop rock as the genre of the song being discussed, tracing its origins and evolution over time.
The pop/rock genre originated in the 1950s from rock and roll music in the US. It has evolved over time as artists incorporated elements of pop and rock music together. Contemporary pop/rock artists like Demi Lovato are represented as "real" rather than outrageous like pop artists or edgy like rock artists. They use everyday clothing and locations in their music videos to appeal to audiences. When creating a pop/rock music video, it's important to consider the conventions of everyday costumes, natural locations, and focusing on the artist's talent through singing or playing an instrument.
1) Genre theory categorizes styles of music based on conventions and similarities. Institutions then promote genres to attract certain audiences. Rock music emerged in the 1960s inspired by bands like the Beatles and featured experimentation with electric guitars.
2) The presentation will focus on representing the conventions of rock music in a print publication. Common rock conventions include tattoos, piercings, electric guitars, drum kits, and the rock hand gesture. Music videos typically feature the band, close-ups of instruments, and are often filmed at night with dark lighting.
3) While early rock was associated with rebellion and drug use, leading to bans of some songs, many modern rock artists choose to promote a clean image
The document discusses genre theory and conventions in rock music. It provides examples of common conventions in rock music videos and live performances that help define the genre, such as:
- Dark clothing and makeup to represent lyrics about love, drugs, and rebellion.
- Use of electric guitars and drums as signature instruments. Guitar solos showcase talent.
- Filming at night or in darkness to create a rebellious feeling. Close-ups of faces and instruments help audiences connect with artists.
- The famous rock hand symbol helps audiences instantly associate an image with the genre.
The document argues these conventions satisfy audience expectations and allow rock music to build popularity by fulfilling the needs of its target demographic: 16

The document discusses how technology has made the relationship between artists and record labels almost unnecessary, as it is now easier for independent artists to upload their music online and build an audience without a label. While record labels provide benefits like marketing, distribution and access to expensive production resources, they also influence the music produced and can limit an artist's creative freedom. As a result, some artists like Ed Sheeran and Ludacris have gained mainstream success through independent releases online before signing with major labels.
Music videos serve several purposes including marketing songs and artists to promote music sales. They keep artists in the public eye for longer which can boost album sales months after release. Music videos also allow artists to creatively express themselves and provide fans insight into the meaning of songs. They can further showcase other talents of artists like Michael Jackson's dancing in "Thriller".
Music videos serve several purposes for artists and the music industry. They are primarily a marketing tool used to promote songs and albums and generate buzz among audiences. This helps drive music sales and keeps artists relevant for longer periods of time. Music videos also allow artists to creatively express themselves and provide insight into the meaning of their songs. Certain artists, like Michael Jackson, have used music videos as a way to showcase other talents like dancing. The development of MTV in 1981 greatly increased exposure for music videos and their role in music promotion and fandom.

THE SACRIFICE HOW PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS STUDENTS ARE SACRIFICING TO CHANGE T...indexPub
The recent surge in pro-Palestine student activism has prompted significant responses from universities, ranging from negotiations and divestment commitments to increased transparency about investments in companies supporting the war on Gaza. This activism has led to the cessation of student encampments but also highlighted the substantial sacrifices made by students, including academic disruptions and personal risks. The primary drivers of these protests are poor university administration, lack of transparency, and inadequate communication between officials and students. This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. However, the researchers call for acknowledging the broader Impact of these sacrifices on the future global movement of FreePalestine.

2. Alternative music originated from the late 70’s, with bands such as Pink Floyd who influenced the genre of
alternative rock. Other sub genres like prog rock and glam rock branched off of this genre, and artists like
David Bowie made alternative music more fashionable and outlandish.
The sub genre of folk rock was originally classed as
alternative as it wasn’t mainstream until the late 70’s. The
band Fleetwood Mac revolutionised alternative music in
the sense that they made their music mainstream and in
turn, the genre became more well known. The photo to the
right is of Fleetwood Mac in front of the iconic Hollywood
sign. This photo shows their success as Hollywood is
renowned for it’s movie studios and Hollywood stars and
is the place to be if you want to be successful in the mass
media.
Alternative music has always been around, however, it was never classed as mainstream.
Artists, as stated above, like Fleetwood Mac, made the genre more accessible and popular. This is
because, in recent years, there have been huge advances in technology which have allowed the
once understated genre to become more mainstream. These advantages are;
iPods, televisions, radio, and the internet (more on next slide).
3. Internet version 2.0
The new version of the internet allows us, as consumers, to become producers. This concept allows consumers to share pieces of media on
Facebook, follow someone on Twitter and upload a film/short video onto YouTube. In the music industry, web 2.0 has allowed people to produce
their own music on programs such as garage band or audacity and then upload a video of them singing/playing an instrument online. By doing
this, anyone with access to the internet can potentially view this video, and by using internet version 2.0, they can comment and share criticisms
about it. Artists such as Justin Bieber became a YouTube sensation, and with the millions of views and positive comments he received, a record
label gave him a record deal because they knew that people already liked him, and would therefore buy his songs –making them more money.
This has changed alternative music by making the genre more mainstream, as the majority of consumers have access to the internet. It has also
allowed prosumers to make alternative music, this modernises the genre as different people have different takes on the genre and they will include
the micro elements they like, for example, the same instruments, however, may change the way they dress to something that is more personal to
them. This moderation changes the macro element of alternative music as it affects the way they are being represented.
Television
TV shows such as X factor and The Voice, give wannabe musicians and singers a chance of getting a record deal. The shows are talent
contests, where the public (consumers) vote for their winner through a selection of stages. They have been proven successful because the
consumers are voting for who they like and who they would buy songs off/go and see them live. This means that the winner is most likely to make
the most money and, in turn, the record label that signed them. By watching these shows, audience members are self gratified as they share the
journey of the contestant and feel like they have experienced their ups and downs. This allows them to indentify with the program. These
shows, particularly The Voice, have changed alternative music as they work on the basis that it doesn’t matter what you look like, abolishing the
mainstream ideology that pop music (which is the most mainstream genre) is an elite genre, where the artists have to look, sing and be represented
in the ‘correct’ way, making them ‘superior’. They give this power to the audience and makes them decide what they like about the contestants
(instead of moulding them into a pop star that the producers think the consumers would like). It has changed alternative music as audience
members appreciate the artists self expression through their hairstyle and fashion sense and it becomes more about the music, rather than what
they look like. This also gives the audience hope that they can achieve their dreams if they feel that their looks (ethnicity, gender, weight) hold
them back.
4. Representation in the media
Alternative bands/artists don’t get a lot of publicity in the mainstream media, this is what makes them alternative.
However, they are most commonly found on music magazines such as Q and AP. On the front cover of the magazine AP, the
band are being represented as superior and officious, this is because the main image has been taken at a long angle, making
them appear domineering. This representation is signified to the audience and can been perceived in two ways. The first way
would make the audience in awe of the band as they are being portrayed as high and mighty, however, the second way might
scare the audience as they could come across as aggressive and bureaucratic. The sell lines are also jumbled up and not in a
straight line, this can portray the band as either messy and not bothered or too cool to care about what the page looks
like, and in turn, what they look like.
Representation of Alternative music in the media
The representation of the band all lies in the hand of the beholder. Alternative bands, as
stated above has never been in the mainstream media before now and they are being
represented to audience members are quirky and different. This representation has
brought about the 70’s and 80’s revelation, where skinny jeans, aviators and tight
clothing have come back into fashion (more on next slide). Although this is a micro
element, this trend is seen in the genre of pop as artists like Lady Gaga have been
inspired by 80’s icons like David Bowie and Madonna.
5. Appearance
As said in the previous slide, fashion has changed the
face of music. Nowadays, how a person dresses, from
their clothes to their hairstyle, is how the consumers
identify with artists and encourages self expression. As
said before, many artists dress a certain way for attention
and publicity as people are more inclined to buy music
of someone that is really well known and famous. This
tends to apply more in the genre of pop as Madonna was
renowned for her unique outfits. In alternative
music, appearance is less of an issue, however, is this
what they want you to think? Nowadays, people are
dressing in a minimalistic way as it is fashionable. This
style has derived from alternative/indie music because
their music is more relaxed and casual. This micro
element is very important, as, especially for alternative
artists, it creates verisimilitude. It is used as a reminder
that these people are real, which allows their fans to
connect and relate to the artists as they are seen as more
human. The micro elements of my genre have to be
correctly representated on my magazine, this way the
audience won’t misconstrue alternative music. For this
to happen, I will have to create a realistic house style, to
do this I can put my model (for the main image) in
clothes that relate to the genre. Use different fonts that
the audience identify as alternative and to use semantic
language so the audience knows that the magazine is
about alternative music.
6. Music to Media
Does music influence the media? In some ways yes. You can argue that if a world wide artist had a number 1 hit, they would
be on the front cover of a music magazine like Q or Kerrang, depending on their genre. However, as time goes on, the music
industry changes , to expand; Rihanna, a famous RnB singer collaborated with the Coldplay, an alternative band. Their
song, Princess of China reached number 4 in the UK charts. This collaboration brought great success as they were asked to
perform together at the closing ceremony of the Paralympics 2012. This was broadcasted all over the world and gave them
both a large amount of publicity. Alternative music has influenced pieces of media like fashion magazines and the clothes
people where nowadays. To expand, everyone likes to dress in their own way and it has now become very fashionable to be
quirky and different in the way you dress. This has stemmed from alternative music as artists such as David Bowie made it
‘cool’ to be different.
Media to Music
Although you can argue that the music industry influences the media, the same argument can be used for the reverse. Some
aspects of the media, for example TV and Film, cast famous singers to be part of a film/TV show or to take part in an
interview. For example, on the 26th October 2012, the alternative band Of Monsters and Men performed on the Graham
Norton show. The guests on that particular show were the cast of the new James Bond film. The show, because of the
guests, became very popular and had a lot of viewers. This increases the publicity of the band and also represents them as
suave, respectable and professional as they had been chosen to perform along side Daniel Craig and Dame Judy Dench.
Although this representation may not be true, it gives the audience the impression that they are worthy of A list celebrities.
7. Appearance Instruments
