iWIKI Presentation - UKCISA Conference 2012

Editor's Notes

  1. Out of our 30,000 student membership, 11,000 are from overseas with the top student populations coming from the US, Canada, China and Germany EUSA Global was a project funded by the University two years ago and I’m happy to say we have been granted funding for another three years. We have learned a lot over the past couple years – tried quite a few things, some worked – some didn’t. Giving a diverse range of students a voice through different channels welcoming students to their new community Accessible and inclusive support Diverse and student-led events & projects Engaging home students in their global experience beyond languages and mobility
  2. For EUSA, we have so many things we want our students to know. However, there are so many tidbits of information that we aren’t aware of, that are unique to a certain student, or that is best not being ‘told’ but in a more conversational space. What kind of information is really important for international students to know. How do we transmit this information. EUSA has been thinking a lot about this. We are beginning to see an international student welcome as more of a journey that doesn’t exist in pre-arrival and post-arrival time frames.
  3. Another big finding –which seems ridiculous that we didn’t already know this – is that students really want to help each other. Sure, some information should come from us but really, students have the first hand knowledge, can speak to the intricacies of their experience, and it opens up the conversations. It allows for questions, answers, tips, and maybe even solutions. It is a great tool for developing our students, giving them ownership of their experience, and builds a trust you wouldn’t receive in a mere website listing support.
  4. So introducing….the iWiki. Stolen from Sheffield (with their permission) and funding by the Scottish Government’s Welcoming International Students Fund. I wish I knew it is a space for students to help one another.
