Workshop delivered bu Roxana Mocanu at the 7th International Conference: "Leadership for an Inclusive and Sustainable World" in Berlin, 28 Jan 2011
This document discusses nine drivers of change that are impacting businesses: globalization, molecularization, digitalization, virtualization, internetworking, re-intermediation, immediacy, innovation, and knowledge. It provides examples for each driver and discusses their impact on human resources and information and communications technology. The document advocates for starting change from the top and breaking old rules and ideas before others do so. It also emphasizes the need for companies to adapt and be ready for constant change.
What does it mean to work with a generation? What is a generation? A generation is generally understood as people who were born in a similar time frame, who have experienced similar life situations, share similar views, attitudes and maybe values which differ from other generations. Great events, traumatic events and unique situations define our experiences and alter out thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Examples of such accounts can include WWI, Depression, bombing of Pearl Harbor, WWII, Korean War, Polio vaccination, assassinations of the Kennedys and King, Walk on the Moon, Vietnam War, computer revolution, Twin Towers, shootings in schools, Super bowls, Presidential elections, special New Year’s Eve parties and so on. My grandmother grew up in the depression and was concerned about such things as lights being on in a room that no one was in and running the water full blast – and to me, these seem inconsequential, even trivial. The events such as those listed above can influence us in positive and negative ways and in the way we think about other nationalities and religions, the workplace, values on how we parent, use of technologies, education, the value we place on others, and even how we try to protect ourselves.
This document discusses how anthropology can be applied to business. It explains that systematic observation is key to understanding what works and what doesn't. Some principles of corporate anthropology are outlined, such as casting a wide net, taking time to observe, listening more than talking, and paying attention to what people do rather than what they say. Culture codes and how unconscious meanings given to things can differ across cultures are discussed. The document also summarizes Thomas Friedman's book on globalization and the ten factors that have flattened the world. Potential applications of anthropology to business include cultural training, understanding ideologies, and creating alliances.

This document discusses key topics related to technology progress and startups. It addresses (1) the history of rapid technological progress since the industrial revolution and signs it is slowing, (2) the importance of computer science and software in driving innovation, and (3) challenges related to achieving breakthrough "0 to 1" innovations versus incremental "1 to n" progress. It also examines reasons for startups' role in innovation and considers questions entrepreneurs should ask themselves when starting a new business.
The document outlines a marketing campaign to sell beach towels at Dartmouth High School between April 27th and May 8th. It includes plans to promote the towels through morning announcements, lunchtime slides, flyers around the school and local businesses, social media groups, ads in the school newspaper and on the school website, a promotional video, and selling at school sporting events and local beaches. The goal is to divide marketing duties among class members and maximize visibility of the towel sale within the school and local community.
The document outlines a project to design an educational toolkit to teach children how to make choices using storytelling. It describes using the SCAMPER tool to modify the subject from "kids" to "me" to trigger thinking about making dosas. An activity had children identify opinions on a story character's dilemma as either the easy way out, right way out, or difficult choice. The final animation was modified from one child's suggestion. Critique noted the need to clarify intentions earlier and ensure the activity had a lasting effect by relating choices to children's lives. It was suggested children play a role in the final animation compilation.

The document discusses the principles of synchronized manufacturing. It explains that production should be driven by demand and scheduled based on the capacity constraint resource (CCR). Operations are scheduled backwards from the CCR to support its schedule through time buffers. Inventory is kept low by maintaining these buffers to absorb disruptions without affecting throughput. Locating CCRs and analyzing buffer discrepancies helps focus improvement efforts on problematic work centers.
This document defines heart failure and discusses its key characteristics. It describes how heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs due to problems like abnormal heart muscle function or excessive loads on the heart. The document outlines the pathophysiology and progression of heart failure, including ventricular dilation and hypertrophy as compensatory mechanisms that ultimately fail. It also covers the clinical features, diagnostic tests, medical management, and nursing care considerations for patients with heart failure.

Flexing Content Strategy to Reach Millennials and Gen ZCarolyn Kent
Steps to craft a foundational content strategy that is still flexible enough to connect with Millennials and Gen Z in spite of their mindset differences.
This document provides an overview of a presentation given by Crystal Olig on managing Millennials in the workplace. Some key points from the presentation include:
- Millennials have different expectations around technology and communication in the workplace compared to older generations. They expect up-to-date tools and more flexible styles of communication.
- Millennials also have different views on success, valuing work-life balance and independence more than high pay or promotions.
- There is tension between generations in values and work styles, particularly around technology, but recognizing generational differences can help organizations be more productive and effective at managing multi-generational teams.
1) Grey NY was tasked with developing a marketing strategy for Nokia to launch a new line of mobile devices targeted at teens and young adults aged 18-30 in the US.
2) Through primary research including intercept interviews in NYC parks, they uncovered the insight that while this group feels in constant transition, phone calls from friends and family provided a sense of calm and connection to relationships.
3) Their big idea proposition positioned Nokia as helping to "propel youth on their mission for everyday wins by delivering them the strength of their foundational relationships."
SHIFT! Impact of Social Media on Your Careercarolross
The webinar discussed the impact of social media on careers. It began with presenters introducing themselves and noting how to ask questions. A survey found the biggest career challenges were technology/social media and networking. The webinar covered assessing one's social media skills and presented a new job search model emphasizing competence, experience, credentials, and differentiated value, authentic story, and brand community. Live webinars and courses were promoted to further skills in areas like branding and social media strategy. Participants were encouraged to continue the conversation on LinkedIn.
Intercultural Challenges and Diversitypludoni GmbH
This document discusses multicultural challenges in human resources management. It provides information on cultural differences between Germany and China in areas such as relationships between employees and employers, friends, and family. It also compares aspects of daily life, social norms, and values between the two cultures. The document aims to raise awareness of cultural diversity and its implications for managing multinational workforces.
The document discusses the concepts of user empowerment, inclusion, media literacy, and privacy. It provides definitions and perspectives on empowerment as strengthening people's control over their lives and opportunities. Inclusion is defined as including people socially and digitally, enabling all people to use technology. Media literacy involves accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages. Privacy is noted as a necessary condition for inclusion. The document explores searching for connections between these concepts.
The document discusses characteristics of the "iGeneration" born between 1990-1999, who spend over 20 hours per day using technology and media, are extreme multitaskers, prefer to communicate via texting and social networks rather than face-to-face, and learn differently with a preference for hands-on and collaborative learning styles utilizing new technologies. It argues that education models need to change to engage this new generation by incorporating the technologies and learning approaches they are accustomed to outside of school.
The document discusses trends and challenges in recruiting for 2020. It notes that the population is growing older and more urban, with the median age rising to 31.5 years by 2020. Different generations now coexist in the workplace, with each generation having distinct characteristics and values shaped by formative world events and technology. Recruiters must understand generational differences to attract, engage, and retain talent. The meaning of work and skills is also shifting, from job titles and tasks to roles, capabilities, and results. Flexibility and work-life balance are increasingly important values.
Daisuke Sugiyama discussed his life journey and how understanding his identity helped him find success. He went through 6 stages: growing up in New York, returning to Japan for high school, attending Keio University, getting his MBA, starting his own businesses, and founding INTERLITERACY. Throughout each stage, he focused on self-reflection to understand himself better and overcome challenges. Understanding one's identity is key to designing a fulfilling life and achieving goals.
