Mozilla IT has been managed for a too long time by paid-staff only. We are now moving toward opening it to the community, be as open as possible. This talk will be about how we're doing it, but it is also an opportunity to gather feedback and exchange with the OSS projects that have always been working that way.

No, I’m not retired!
Recently we moved and downsized from a large North American urban area to a smaller house in the country. We also downsized the infrastructure of our corporation. Thanks to Cloud, Social and Collaborative technologies, acquaintances in our new locale think we are retired and not working full time.
In our area there is a high concentration of government and other traditional corporate workers – It’s not on their radar that one can work in a cabana on a beach, on a sailboat on a lake, a favorite pub or anywhere like that and still be in the office attending meetings, taking phone calls, being productive and doing it all efficiently. Not to mention the cost savings to be had for employees and employers. This is the Future of Work.
For those of us in the IT world, working this way is taken for granted but now it’s time to share some of these “secrets” with those outside of the tech world.

Three years ago, there was almost no tech scene in Oklahoma City. Today, there are over 20 active user groups, and half of those started in 2014. Living in an area with little to no tech community can be a drag, but with a little work, you can help build one in your area. Listen to the story of how myself and other volunteers built up the tech community in Oklahoma, and started the non-profit Techlahoma Foundation that supports all the community events and activities in the area - including a national conference called Thunder Plains.

What every successful open source project needs
In the last few years open source has transformed the software industry. From Android to Wikipedia, open source is everywhere, but how does one succeed in it? While open source projects come in all shapes and sizes and all forms of governance, no matter what kind of project you’re a part of, there are a set of fundamentals that lead to success. I’d like to share some of the lessons I’ve learned from running two of the largest commercial open source projects, Docker and MongoDB, as well as some very successful community projects.

Challenges running Jitsi Meet at scale during the pandemic

How we build project for Open Source

Making Gentoo Tick

How we made jenkins community
- Jenkins is an open source automation server with over 53,000 installations and 600+ plugins created by 500 contributors. It uses a modular architecture and extensibility model to enable large-scale distributed development.
- Jenkins succeeded by focusing on extensibility through well-defined extension points, treating extensions as first-class citizens, enabling data and code extensibility, and ensuring extensions are themselves extensible. This reduced communication needs and lowered barriers to contribution.
- An update center and shared resources like IRC provided a "center of gravity" to connect contributors and ensure the long-term maintenance of plugins. This self-reinforcing community allowed Jenkins to scale development through extensibility.
Tonido
Tonido is an extensible, peer-to-peer personal web application platform that allows users to access their private data and applications from any device with a web browser without storing any data on third-party servers, ensuring complete privacy, and it currently offers applications for photos, music, file sharing, and workspace collaboration.

Partecipate alla presentazione per immergervi in una storia di interoperabilità, standard e formati aperti, per poi discutere del ruolo importante che i contributori hanno in una comunità open source sostenibile.
BIO: Sostenitrice del software libero e dei formati standard e aperti. È stata un membro attivo dei progetti Fedora e openSUSE e ha co-fondato l'Associazione LibreItalia dove è stata coinvolta in diversi eventi, migrazioni e formazione relativi a LibreOffice. In precedenza ha lavorato a migrazioni e corsi di formazione su LibreOffice per diverse amministrazioni pubbliche e privati. Da gennaio 2020 lavora in SUSE come Software Release Engineer per Uyuni e SUSE Manager e quando non segue la sua passione per i computer e per Geeko coltiva la sua curiosità per l'astronomia (da cui deriva il suo nickname deneb_alpha).

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible.
