This document describes a method for detecting oil spills using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in MATLAB software. The method involves 4 steps: 1) converting RGB images to grayscale, 2) filtering the images, 3) thresholding the images, and 4) analyzing segmented objects to identify oil spills. The method is tested on a SAR image of an oil spill that occurred in Ennore, India in 2017 when two tankers collided. The results show the oil spill can be accurately detected and extracted from the image after applying the image processing steps in MATLAB. Automatic oil spill detection using remote sensing images helps response efforts and monitoring of cleanup operations.
