The British public are now far more concerned by energy security than climate change compared with people around the world. There is recognition we need a diverse mix of energy sources to meet needs, including support for nuclear. However, consumers themselves are still wedded to gas, and have limited awareness of alternative options. Ben Page gave this presentation to Madano Partnership's breakfast briefing on the UK’s evolving energy policy: Opportunties and Challenges on 25 April 2013.
This document discusses the concept of a "prosumer energy culture" and a fractal-like grid. It notes that households are increasingly producing their own energy through technologies like solar panels. This is shifting energy profiles and creating constraints on the traditional grid. A fractal grid that recognizes consumer values like independence, control and sustainability could help alleviate these issues through approaches like localized peer-to-peer energy sharing and collective prosumerism. It would incentivize distributed energy investment, increase resilience and allow greater utilization of renewable resources.
Wide margins of Wisconsin voters say that they want to see Wisconsin meet more of its energy needs through clean, renewable sources like wind, solar and bioenergy and energy efficiency, according to a recent bipartisan poll. They are also more likely to support candidates this who say they will promote more use of clean renewable energy like wind and solar power. The polling was conducted July 26 through Aug. 3 by a bipartisan research team comprised of Public Opinion Strategies (R) and Fairbank, Maslin, Metz and Associates (D). The margin of error is +/- 4.9 percent, with more than 400 Wisconsin voters representing a cross section of demographics including political affiliation, race, sex and locality. The polling was done was part of nonpartisan outreach efforts to broaden the conversation on energy issues between candidates and voters throughout the Midwest.

This document summarizes the outcomes of an energy efficiency project for low-income households in Tasmania. It finds that a direct home visit approach that provided home upgrades and education led to average energy savings of 1.4 kWh/day, while an approach combining home visits and community capacity building led to average savings of 2.8 kWh/day. Both approaches increased the time households spent in their comfort zone. The study provided insights into the critical influences on household energy use, such as energy-cost tradeoffs, housing quality issues, and lifestyle factors. It recommends future programs take a long-term, mixed approach combining home upgrades and modified community engagement.

This document summarizes a webinar discussing a new study on how increased online activities through broadband networks can save energy and reduce CO2 emissions. The webinar features presentations from the executive director of GeSI, the executive director of public policy and corporate responsibility at Verizon, and the director of economic and social analysis at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. They discuss the study's findings that increased telecommuting, online news consumption, video/music downloads, banking, purchases, education, photography and email can lead to annual energy savings of 250 million barrels of oil in the US and 123 million in Europe through reduced transportation needs.
Electric vehicles (EVs) and solar power are a perfect match for reducing emissions. As EVs become more popular and solar power more affordable, pairing the two technologies allows drivers to commute with zero emissions while eliminating reliance on fossil fuels. A survey found solar can encourage EV adoption, while EV ownership increases interest in solar to offset home energy demands. Automakers now partner with solar installers to sell the benefits of this combination. As technologies advance, EVs may provide power grid services through vehicle-to-grid systems while homes with solar and EVs gain resilience during outages.

This document discusses four problems facing the electricity market: rising energy prices, divergence between demand and energy growth, increasing adoption of distributed energy resources, and declining network load factors. To address these issues, capacity-based pricing is proposed to maintain network revenues and incentivize demand management over energy consumption. While this may reduce incentives for energy efficiency, natural appliance replacement cycles and distributed energy adoption will continue to lower grid usage to some degree.
The document discusses how Steffes Corporation is using electric water heaters and Internet of Things technologies like Azure to help stabilize power grids and increase the use of renewable energy sources. By connecting water heaters and controlling them in real-time, Steffes can store and dispatch energy as needed to balance the grid. This helps compensate for fluctuations from renewable sources like wind and solar. Steffes has conducted over two dozen trials across seven time zones and Hawaii is beginning to install the system with a goal of reaching 100% renewable energy by 2045. The system provides utilities with more precise control over energy distribution and could help cut costs for consumers while enabling more people to participate in renewable energy adoption.
The document discusses the issues of global climate change and the role that information and communication technologies (ICT) can play in mitigating climate change impacts. It notes that climate change is occurring rapidly, non-uniformly, and is harming the environment. ICT has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions through applications like smart buildings, transportation and electrical grids. However, ICT must also improve its own efficiency to reduce emissions, and many organizations will soon need to report and offset their greenhouse gas emissions.

The document provides rules and secrets for achieving happiness. It lists 10 principles for happiness, including accepting that the world is imperfect, being a giver rather than a taker, and finding peace of mind through hard work and doing good deeds. It then lists 24 secrets for happiness, such as being grateful, speaking the truth, exercising, maintaining relationships, developing faith, expressing love, and giving happiness to others. The overall message is that following principles like honesty, kindness, gratitude, and spirituality can help lead to greater inner peace and happiness.
Ben Page gave this presentation on Happiness at the Forum for European Philosophy ‘Consilience’ panel discussion at the London School of Economics (LSE) on Wednesday 16 January 2014.
The document describes an experiment using four different colored Q-tips to test different areas of the tongue's ability to taste flavors. Students are blindfolded and use each Q-tip on their tongue, noting which taste bud section detects the strongest flavor. They then repeat while holding their nose to see if this changes the taste experience. The purpose is to learn how taste buds allow us to sense different flavors and how the nose contributes to full flavor perception when eating.
This document outlines 8 rules for achieving happiness: 1) meditate, 2) find something to look forward to, 3) commit conscious acts of kindness, 4) infuse positivity into your environment, 5) exercise, 6) spend money on experiences rather than things, 7) spend money on others, and 8) go back to your hobbies. Each rule is accompanied by a brief explanation or description.
The document provides 5 rules for happiness in Japanese style. The rules are to not step on the edges of tatami mats, honor your ancestors, appreciate simple beauty, honoring ancestors is important in Filipino culture as a way to show respect even after they have passed away, and asking why 2 of the rules are considered least important.
Never before in the human history, have we become so sick. Our health is at stake because we moved away from natural living. In this short guide, we explore the secrets that our ancestors knew to live healthy and a happy life. Unless we embrace a natural lifestyle, our well-being will remain a big question mark.
This short presentation encourages the viewer to always be happy and provides no other details. It lists the images, text, presentation creator, and music but does not elaborate on any content within the presentation itself. The presentation is marked as ended.
The song "Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin encourages listeners to focus on being happy rather than worrying about problems. It suggests living in the present moment and accepting what you cannot change. The lyrics tell people to forget about their troubles and just "don't worry, don't worry, be happy."
The study examined how factors of happiness differ based on gender and occupation. Researchers conducted a survey of 320 people and used factor analysis to identify 5 key factors of happiness: acceptance and being yourself, resilience, relationship, trying out, and trust. ANOVA tests found significant differences in these happiness factors based on occupation but not gender. The factors provide insight into what influences individuals' happiness and how it varies between occupations.
In our day-to-day lives it is easy to miss the forest for the trees and look over some of the smaller, simpler things that can disproportionally affect our happiness levels. Luckily, we can go off more than just our intuition; there are lots of studies that aim for finding the right behavior that leads to a happier life. In this presentation, we take a look at some of the more actionable advice and thoughts
Happiness comes from our mental attitude and ceasing to worry about things outside of our control, rather than external conditions. It is achieved through pursuing our values and achieving what must be done, rather than pain or self-indulgence. While the Constitution allows us to pursue happiness, we must work to attain it ourselves through being content in any state and not dwelling on the past.
The document outlines Shawn Achor's seven principles of positive psychology that can fuel success at work. The principles are: 1) The Happiness Advantage - focusing on positivity trains the brain for success. 2) The Fulcrum and the Lever - changing one's mindset maximizes potential. 3) The Tetris Effect - positive patterns can replace negative ones. 4) Falling Up - finding a "third path" to cope with stress. 5) The Zorro Circle - small, achievable goals build control and success. 6) The 20 Second Rule - habits are driven by activation energy from brief actions. 7) Social Investment - investing in relationships provides support.
This document discusses taste and the gustatory system. It describes the five primary tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. Taste buds located on papillae in the tongue contain receptor cells that detect these tastes. The taste pathway involves nerves carrying signals from taste buds to the brain. Different regions of the tongue are more sensitive to certain tastes. Factors like adaptation can influence taste perception. Taste works closely with smell, and disorders can impact taste sensation. The document provides details on taste receptors, pathways, thresholds, influences on taste, and taste disorders.
The document provides 13 steps to lead a happy life. It recommends making the most of life and not being passive, reaching goals in a planned manner which provides energy for the next goal, getting involved in your work and not giving up when facing failures, grabbing opportunities when they arise, accepting yourself and having confidence without comparing yourself to others, developing true friendships through sharing, learning from mistakes by forgiving and forgetting, handling tension smoothly by relaxing, contributing to society, building relationships based on love and humanity, facing life with a winning attitude despite failures, and being thankful for what you have been given.
This document provides tips on how to find happiness. It recommends controlling anger and jealousy, being humble, listening to others, speaking thoughtfully, being honest and trusting, having a caring heart, thinking positively, and having gratitude. Practicing these traits like controlling emotions, caring for others, honesty, and optimism can help one lead a happier life.

The housing supply conundrum - New Government, new market?JLL
A new Government will take office for a five year term from 2015, but what will this mean for the UK housing market?
We believe that the next five years will be one of the most crucial for the UK housing market in a generation. The big question is whether we will be any further forward in solving the country’s housing supply crisis. The next Government will hold a powerful and vital key to unlocking this crucially needed supply.
In terms of housing market forecasts, we expect home buying demand to rise over the next few years. There are clear headwinds, led by affordability, but there are also many reasons to believe that turnover will increase and that prices will rise. An improving and stable UK economy will be the key driver. Employment will pick up, job security will improve and real incomes will begin to rise. These will all lead to a greater willingness and ability to buy or move.
On balance we believe that UK house prices will rise steadily over the next five years, in the order of 3-5% pa. We forecast that transactions across the UK will increase from current levels and then stabilise at around 1.31m pa. And finally, we expect housing completions in England to grow from around 120,000 to 150,000 pa in the next five years.
This document discusses Australia's options for renewable energy and efficiency. It contains 5 chapters that examine key considerations for energy policy decisions, policy options to address market barriers for renewables, a methodology to model technology options to predict viability, and the potential of an energy services model to improve efficiency. The introduction emphasizes that establishing sustainable renewable policies requires considering environmental, social and economic factors of all energy generation given its importance and externalities.
This document is a questionnaire from a September 2013 national public opinion survey on energy and electricity conducted by Bisconti Research, Inc. The Distribution of Domestic Energy-Tech in Great Britain: 2008 – 2011Ben Anderson
This document summarizes research on the distribution of domestic energy technologies in Great Britain from 2008 to 2011. It finds that adopters of these technologies tend to be home-owning residents of detached, rural homes who report environmentally friendly views and actions. Those seriously considering adoption also tend to have higher energy spending. Rejecters of these technologies are more often urban renters living in non-detached housing who report less environmentally friendly attitudes. The research finds some differences between adopters of solar PV and solar thermal technologies and highlights equity issues in the uneven distribution of benefits from these technologies.

The document analyzes public opinion surveys on climate change in the UK from 2009-2014. It finds that around 56-57% of the public believes that climate change is real and man-made, while agreement with the scientific consensus has remained stable over the past 5 years. However, climate change is rarely identified as a top priority issue except during extreme weather events like flooding. While renewable energy sources remain popular, opposition to fracking will depend on real-world experiences with the technology.

Energy Efficiency: A Sign of Personal Virtue or an Untapped Business Opportun...Sasin SEC
by Peter du Pont, Vice-President, Government & Clean Energy Consulting, Nexant Inc.
According to the Asian Development Bank, a total of $944 billion of investment will be needed in energy savings opportunities by 2020 in order for China, India, and Southeast Asian countries to meet their national targets for EE and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Yet only a fraction of this investment is currently being planned. This talk will address the proverbial $20 bill lying on the ground and describe why there are so few takers, and what is needed to “sex” up energy efficiency so that it becomes a more broadly bankable business opportunity. It will describe different business and regulatory models for stimulating investments in energy efficiency in buildings, factories, and the transport sector.
Dr. Peter du Pont leads the clean energy initiatives at Nexant Asia and has more than 25 years of experience developing sustainable energy and efficiency programs in the U.S. and Asia.

The document summarizes views from an Ipsos online community on Brexit 5 years after the referendum vote. Most people feel they have not noticed significant changes from Brexit yet and think the pandemic has overshadowed its effects. While some notice higher costs or shipping delays from EU countries, many are still confused about attributing rising prices to Brexit or Covid. There remains a divide between those who voted Leave and Remain, with both sides still convinced of their views despite most saying they have not been personally affected much either way. Overall, uncertainty persists around how Brexit will truly impact daily life.
