Short summery on this
chapter
📌
The chapter introduces a character who is typical in
appearance and eccentric in his behavior. As are his
looks so is his behavior. As the scene opens, he is sitting
with his feet in a ditch by the roadside over the down
towards Adderdean. He is just a tramp-a wandering
figure, aimlessly moving around in a leisurely manner:
He is occupied in contemplating the boots, the four
shoes which he had put in a graceful group on turf and is
looking at them. Suddenly he hears a voice, and seeing
nobody around, he is having visions due to his drunken
state. lnspite of listening the voice repeatedly, he does
not believe that somebody is surely there. It is only when
the ‘voice’ he was hearing, threw flints at him that he
thinks differently The voice makes sure that by giving
Marvel frightful threats, he can grip him and use him to
his benefit. The Invisible Man, through ’voice ’ convinces
Marvel that he is ‘real ’ and says that Marvel is the one
who can help him get clothes, shelter and other things.
Threatened of the consequences of not listening to the
Invisible Man, Marvel accepts to obey his commands
10
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS
1)Why does the voice utter the
words “it’s a beast of a county,”
“And pigs from people”?
The voice utters these
words--“It’s a beast of a
county, and pigs for people”,
because the invisible man is
totally put off by the behavior
of people and the country.
This is mainly because of his
being mistreated by the
people at Iping. The torture
he had to undergd at the
hands of me people of Sussex,
stands a testimony to the
above statement. He stated
these words in utmost disgust
and utter despair.
2)Why was Mr. Marvel
suddenly taken by the
collar and shaken violently
?
Mr. Marvel was suddenly
taken by the collar and
shaken violently because
despite the invisible man
assuring him not to be
alarmed, the invisible man
takes him by the collar-and
shakes him so violently that
. he is totally bewildered.
11
12
3)What was the reaction of Mr.
Marvel was when the voice said,
“I'm an invisible man ”?
On hearing the voice stating his
invisibility, Mr. Marvel very
bluntly wanted to know his
whereabouts. He was not
convinced with the voice to begin
with, when it replied it was six
yards in front of him.
4)What was the job, Mr. Marvel was
chosen for ?
Mr. Marvel was chosen for being
the helper of the Invisible Man
and he was required to help him in
getting clothes and shelter
followed by the other things. In
return the invisible man a man of
power; assured great things for
him.
13
5)What is the impression created by Thomas Marvel during his
first appearance ? Why and how griffin did choose him to
provide him help ?
Thomas Marvel is the local tramp. He is harmless ,eccentric fat
,not nearly as foolish as griffin thinks he is. His appearance and
mannerism suggest that he led a life of isolation. His unkempt
and shabby clothes also suggest that he lead a bachelor’s life. He
wastes his time doing frivolous things . Griffin chose him for help
as he was also an outcast like griffin . Griffin’s considered him to
be an easy target Marvel also accepted Griffin’s invisibility
without much ado as an invisible man. Griffin lured him into
helping him by telling him about his enormous power as an
invisible person. He told him that together they could do
anything. Marvel accepted this offer because he was tempted as
well as scared of saying no.
