This chapter introduces key concepts in data communications and computer networks. It discusses the components of data communication systems, how data is represented and flows, and different network topologies. It also defines local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and how smaller networks can be connected through switching to form larger internetworks like the Internet. A brief history of the Internet is provided starting from early packet-switched networks to the current global Internet. Standards organizations and their role in formalizing Internet standards are also outlined.
