Great news: technology is finally at a point where we can build sophisticated computer vision applications that run on mass market devices, like mobile phones and cars and vacuum cleaners. Not-so-great news: developing vision applications is hard — maybe uniquely so. Technical and business challenges abound. Developers can quickly come up against thermal and power limitations. Software may perform well on one platform, but poorly on another, similar platform. These are some of the problems that can sink your product. In this talk, Hartley presents case studies in which various computer vision challenges put product development at risk, and explores how they are being addressed by leading product developers. What lessons are there for businesses working in this area? What key challenges remain to be overcome to enable ubiquitous visual intelligence?

Modest scale HPC on Azure using CGYRO

Fusion simulations have traditionally required the use of leadership scale HPC resources in order to produce advances in physics. One such package is CGYRO, a premier tool for multi-scale plasma turbulence simulation. CGYRO is a typical HPC application that will not fit into a single node, as it requires several TeraBytes of memory and O(100) TFLOPS compute capability for cutting-edge simulations. CGYRO also requires high-throughput and low-latency networking, due to its reliance on global FFT computations. While in the past such compute may have required hundreds, or even thousands of nodes, recent advances in hardware capabilities allow for just tens of nodes to deliver the necessary compute power. We explored the feasibility of running CGYRO on Cloud resources provided by Microsoft on their Azure platform, using the infiniband-connected HPC resources in spot mode. We observed both that CPU-only resources were very efficient, and that running in spot mode was doable, with minimal side effects. The GPU-enabled resources were less cost effective but allowed for higher scaling.

Legal & General is engaged into a very innovative Digital Transformation, which goes from the services offered to its customers to the management of its IT Applications and Infrastructure. As part of this strategic evolution, this talk presents how L&G together with ActiveEon Software and Services was able to replace 2 schedulers (Tibco DataSynapse and IBM AlgoBatch) with ProActive Workflows & Scheduling, and migrate the Solvency application to the Azure Cloud. A key aspect has been the ability to pipeline CPU-intensive tasks with I/O intensive ones. This alone allowed for 10% overall savings in runtime and grid resources, and for the high priority risk reports to be made available to customers 3x faster than the previous solution (16 hours down to 5 hours).

Distributed Crypto-Currency Trading with Apache Pulsar

Apache Pulsar was developed to address several shortcomings of existing messaging systems including geo-replication, message durability, and lower message latency. We will implement a multi-currency quoting application that feeds pricing information to a crypto-currency trading platform that is deployed around the globe. Given the volatility of the crypto-currency prices, sub-second message latency is critical to traders. Equally important is ensuring consistent quotes are available to all geographical locations, i.e the price of Bitcoin shown to a user in the USA should be the same as it to a trader in Hong Kong. We will highlight the advantages of Apache Pulsar over traditional messaging systems and show how its low latency and replication across multiple geographies make it ideally suited for globally distributed, real-time applications.

Abstract:- Most real-world data science workflows require more than multiple cores on a single server to meet scale and speed demands, but there is a general lack of understanding when it comes to what machine learning on distributed systems looks like in practice. Gartner and Forrester do not consider distributed execution when they score advanced analytics software solutions. Many formal machine learning training occurs on single node machines with non-distributed algorithms. In this talk we discuss why an understanding of distributed architectures is important for anyone in the analytical sciences. We will cover the current distributed machine learning ecosystem. We will review common pitfalls when performing machine learning at scale. We will discuss architectural considerations for a machine learning program such as the role of storage and compute and under what circumstances they should be combined or separated.

However, gaps remain in the storage layer that complicate the transition to Hadoop-based architectures. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
