This document provides an overview of health information technology (HIT) and electronic health records (EHRs). It discusses how healthcare is complex with many stakeholders and how HIT can help address issues like safety, timeliness, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and patient-centeredness. The document reviews landmark reports calling for healthcare reform and the role of HIT. Benefits of HIT include improved outcomes, quality and cost savings. However, implementing HIT requires more than just technology for technology's sake and will not automatically fix all healthcare problems. The focus should be on using technology to meet ultimate goals of improving individual health, population health and organizational health.
