Genetics is the science of how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring. It deals with the transmission and inheritance of traits. Originally introduced in 1906 by Bateson, genetics comes from the Greek word "gene" meaning "to become" or "to grow into". Medical genetics focuses on the inheritance of hereditary disorders and identifies pediatric disorders associated with birth defects. Recent advances help understand how genetics impact common diseases in adults like cancer, Alzheimer's, and diabetes.
