Addiction is a chronic brain disease caused by drug use that disrupts the brain's communication system. Drugs either imitate or overstimulate the brain's natural chemical messengers, particularly dopamine, and can lead to compulsive drug seeking behavior. While initial drug use is often voluntary, continued use changes the brain in ways that challenge self-control. Risk factors like genetics, environment, and age influence a person's vulnerability to addiction. Prevention through education is key to reducing drug abuse.
This document discusses cocaine addiction, its effects, and treatment options. It defines addiction and describes the short-term and long-term physical and psychological effects of cocaine use. Short-term effects include increased heart rate and blood pressure, while long-term effects involve permanent damage to organs and increased risk of health problems. The document also outlines pharmacological and behavioral treatment approaches. Pharmacological treatments aim to reduce cocaine cravings and use with medications, though none are FDA-approved. Behavioral therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency management have shown effectiveness in reducing cocaine abuse.
Addiction and substance abuse are significant public health issues that affect individuals and society. Treatment is crucial to address the impacts of addiction and facilitate recovery. There are several types of treatment approaches that are effective, including detoxification, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and medication-assisted treatment. Evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing target the psychological drivers of addiction. Supportive services, including individual counseling, peer support groups, and family therapy, provide a comprehensive support system to aid recovery. The overall goal of addiction treatment is to improve health, break the cycle of addiction, and empower sustained recovery.

1) Tobacco smoking remains the leading preventable cause of disease and death worldwide. While smoking rates have decreased in developed countries, certain high risk groups have greater difficulty quitting.
2) Brief advice from doctors and other healthcare professionals on smoking cessation can more than double quit rates compared to no advice. Comprehensive treatment involving both behavioral support and pharmacotherapy is most effective for treating nicotine dependence.
3) Effective cessation medications include nicotine replacement therapy, varenicline, bupropion, and others depending on location. Behavioral support through counseling, telephone quitlines, internet programs, and motivational interviewing can also significantly increase success rates.

Drug abuse is a common problem that is ruining not only the individuals but offering a global issue. People experiment with drugs for many different reasons. Many first try drugs out of curiosity, to have a good time, because friends are doing it, or in an effort to improve athletic performance or ease another problem, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. Use doesn't automatically lead to abuse, and there is no specific level at which drug use moves from casual to problematic. It varies by individual. Addiction is less about the amount of substance consumed or the frequency, and more to do with the consequences of drug use. No matter how often or how little you’re consuming, if your drug use is causing problems in your life, at work, school, home, or in your relationship, you likely have a drug abuse or addiction problem. And if you are having this problem you are actually in trouble.

DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODELgerogepatton
As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication
networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3)
represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities.
Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because
of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To
solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion
detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network
(CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection
dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to
train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better
at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition,
our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection
accuracy rate of 99.50%.
Electric vehicle and photovoltaic advanced roles in enhancing the financial p...IJECEIAES
Climate change's impact on the planet forced the United Nations and governments to promote green energies and electric transportation. The deployments of photovoltaic (PV) and electric vehicle (EV) systems gained stronger momentum due to their numerous advantages over fossil fuel types. The advantages go beyond sustainability to reach financial support and stability. The work in this paper introduces the hybrid system between PV and EV to support industrial and commercial plants. This paper covers the theoretical framework of the proposed hybrid system including the required equation to complete the cost analysis when PV and EV are present. In addition, the proposed design diagram which sets the priorities and requirements of the system is presented. The proposed approach allows setup to advance their power stability, especially during power outages. The presented information supports researchers and plant owners to complete the necessary analysis while promoting the deployment of clean energy. The result of a case study that represents a dairy milk farmer supports the theoretical works and highlights its advanced benefits to existing plants. The short return on investment of the proposed approach supports the paper's novelty approach for the sustainable electrical system. In addition, the proposed system allows for an isolated power setup without the need for a transmission line which enhances the safety of the electrical network
Harnessing WebAssembly for Real-time Stateless Streaming PipelinesChristina Lin
Traditionally, dealing with real-time data pipelines has involved significant overhead, even for straightforward tasks like data transformation or masking. However, in this talk, we’ll venture into the dynamic realm of WebAssembly (WASM) and discover how it can revolutionize the creation of stateless streaming pipelines within a Kafka (Redpanda) broker. These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.
1. Introduction to
Alcohol Use
Disorders and
Nicotine Addiction
This slide provides an overview of the prevalence, impact, and underlying
factors of two of the most common substance use disorders - alcohol use
disorder and nicotine addiction. Understanding the nature and scope of
these conditions is the first step towards developing effective prevention
and treatment strategies.
By Davud Ahmadzada
2. Understanding the
Prevalence and Impact
Alcohol use disorders and nicotine addiction are alarmingly prevalent,
affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Alcohol use disorder impacts
an estimated 14.1 million adults in the United States alone, while nicotine
addiction affects nearly 34 million smokers. The economic burden of
these conditions is staggering, with the annual costs exceeding $250 billion
in the US. Beyond the financial toll, these addictions exact a heavy human
price, contributing to a range of serious health complications and greatly
diminishing quality of life.
3. Biological and Psychological
Factors
Alcohol use disorders and nicotine addiction are influenced by a complex
interplay of biological and psychological factors. Neurochemical
imbalances in the brain's reward system contribute to the development and
maintenance of these addictions. Additionally, genetic predispositions can
increase an individual's vulnerability.
Psychological factors, such as stress, trauma, and mental health
conditions, can also play a significant role in the onset and progression of
these substance use disorders. Understanding the multifaceted nature of
these factors is crucial for designing effective prevention and treatment
strategies.
4. The Role of Genetics and Environment
1
Genetic Predisposition
Certain genetic variations can increase susceptibility to
alcohol and nicotine addiction.
2
Family History
Children of individuals with substance use disorders
are at higher risk.
3
Environmental Factors
Exposure to trauma, stress, and peer
influences can contribute to addiction.
The development of alcohol use disorders and nicotine addiction is influenced by a complex interplay
between genetic and environmental factors. Individuals with a family history of these conditions are
more likely to develop similar addictions, due in part to inherited genetic vulnerabilities. However,
environmental circumstances, such as exposure to trauma, chronic stress, and peer pressure, can
also significantly impact the likelihood of substance abuse and dependence.

of the disorder.
6. Short-Term and Long-Term
Health Consequences
Alcohol use disorders and nicotine addiction can have severe short-term
and long-term health consequences. Excessive alcohol consumption can
lead to intoxication, accidents, and organ damage. Prolonged smoking
increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory illnesses.
7. Treatment Approaches: Medications
and Behavioral Therapies
Medications
Pharmaceutical
interventions can
be highly effective
in managing
alcohol use
disorders and
nicotine addiction.
Medications like
naltrexone,
acamprosate, and
disulfiram can
reduce cravings
and block the
rewarding effects
of alcohol.
Nicotine
Replacement
Therapies
Nicotine patches,
gum, and
lozenges can
alleviate withdrawal
symptoms and
make it easier for
individuals to quit
smoking. These
products provide a
controlled dose of
nicotine to ease the
transition.
Behavioral
Therapies
Cognitive-
behavioral therapy,
contingency
management, and
motivational
interviewing are
evidence-based
approaches that
help individuals
develop coping
strategies, build
self-efficacy, and
address the
underlying
psychological
factors driving
Comprehensiv
e Treatment
The most effective
treatment plans
often combine
medication and
behavioral
therapies, tailoring
the approach to the
individual's unique
needs and
preferences. This
integrated care
model maximizes
the chances of
long-term recovery.
8. Harm Reduction Strategies
Moderation Techniques
Developing strategies to limit and control
alcohol or nicotine consumption, such as
setting daily or weekly limits, pacing drinks,
and using nicotine replacement therapy.
Safer Alternatives
Exploring less harmful alternatives, like
switching to e-cigarettes or low-alcohol
beverages, to gradually reduce dependence
on more dangerous substances.
Support Systems
Connecting with support groups,
counseling, and community resources to
build a network of care and accountability,
preventing relapse and promoting long-term
recovery.
Overdose Prevention
Learning to recognize and respond to signs
of alcohol poisoning or nicotine overdose,
and having access to life-saving
interventions like naloxone.
9. Preventing Relapse and Maintaining
Recovery
1 Develop Coping Strategies
Identify and practice healthy ways to manage triggers, cravings, and high-risk
situations that may lead to relapse.
2 Build a Support Network
Engage with support groups, counselors, and sober communities to maintain
accountability and foster a positive, recovery-focused lifestyle.
3 Embrace Lifestyle Changes
Adopt new habits, hobbies, and routines that reinforce sobriety and provide a
sense of purpose and fulfillment.
10. The Importance of Integrated Care and
Support Systems
Collaborative Approach
Effective treatment integrates
medical professionals,
therapists, and support
groups to address the
multifaceted needs of
individuals with alcohol use
disorders and nicotine
addiction.
Community-Based
Support
Connecting patients with peer
support networks, recovery
groups, and community-
based resources empowers
them to build a sustainable,
sober lifestyle.
Comprehensive Care
Coordinating physical, mental,
and behavioral health
services ensures that all
aspects of addiction are
addressed, leading to better
long-term outcomes.
