Stroke affects over 150,000 people in the UK each year, often resulting in paralysis and disability. The author suffered a massive stroke at age 35 but was left alone, terrified, and unable to walk, talk, or eat. Through intense therapy over 18 months, he regained most functions but a key part of his recovery came from meeting other young stroke survivors who gave him hope. Currently, there is no UK network to link new stroke victims with experienced survivors for support. The proposed network aims to match people based on attributes and connect them to improve recovery times and outcomes for stroke patients. It has support from medical experts and seeks technological and funding assistance to become a service provided to UK hospitals.
1. Barley was one of the first domesticated grains and was important for making bread and beer. It provided nutrients for yeast growth and its husk helped with filtration.
2. There are different varieties of barley classified by winter/spring planting and 2-row/6-row grain structure. Specific varieties are chosen for malting or feed purposes.
3. The Maris Otter variety was developed through selection and breeding over many decades, becoming an important malting variety in 1965 though newer varieties now aim to improve yield and quality further.

HTTP by Hand: Exploring HTTP/1.0, 1.1 and 2.0Cory Forsyth
This document summarizes the evolution of HTTP from versions 0.9 to 2. It discusses key aspects of HTTP/1.0 and HTTP/1.1 such as persistent connections and pipelining. It also covers how these features were abused to optimize page load performance. Finally, it provides an overview of HTTP/2 and how it differs from previous versions through the use of binary format, header compression, and multiplexing requests over a single TCP connection.

The document summarizes a team's project to promote animal welfare in Singapore through a Design for Change school challenge. The team chose the project to raise awareness of animal cruelty issues in Singapore and promote better treatment of animals. Their action plan involved gathering information, setting up an online presence, holding a three-day exhibition, distributing brochures, collecting pledges and donations, and feeding stray animals. The goal was to educate the public about animal welfare and cruelty issues, and encourage people to support organizations helping animals.
Sir David Attenborough endorsed the iSpot project, which encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to identify plants and animals by taking photos and receiving identifications. iSpot has grown significantly since launching, with over 14,500 registered users who have made over 190,000 observations and uploaded over 125,000 images covering over 5,000 species, most identified to the species level. Developments include expanding iSpot locally, mobile apps, and launching in South Africa later this year.

The NEAVS has partnered with renowned animal photographer Jo-Anne McArthur to showcase animals that have been rescued from laboratories. McArthur will photograph animals at various sanctuaries and shelters to share their stories of survival and the importance of NEAVS's mission to end animal testing. For over a decade, McArthur has documented animal lives in over 40 countries. This collaboration will feature McArthur's stunning photographs that capture the personalities and vibrancy of rescued animals, contrasting with those still suffering in laboratories. The photos aim to fuel support for NEAVS's work to rescue more animals and end unnecessary animal testing.

Key speakers are listed from institutions around the world including Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine, Autism Wales, The National Autistic Society UK, and Johns Hopkins University who will discuss findings and interventions related to ASD.
This document summarizes research on building a latent social network from user contributions to the Encyclopedia of Life Flickr group. Researchers analyzed over 84,000 photos tagged with taxonomic information to discover implicit connections between users based on overlapping tags. The network was able to identify connectors between domains like birds/mammals and insects. Researchers then evaluated the network by contacting sample users, finding that several had real offline relationships and interactions around specific taxa. The network visualization also aims to show the evolution of connections over time to encourage further participation.
iNaturalist presentation to Master NaturalistsSam Kieschnick
This document discusses iNaturalist, a platform for documenting biodiversity through observations of species. It encourages using iNaturalist to train naturalists by having users submit observations with details of what, when, where, and evidence of species. Some benefits are learning from experts, contributing to knowledge, and interacting with others. Potential criticisms addressed are lack of expertise, privacy, inaccurate photos, and identification delays. The document promotes participating to gain knowledge and share naturalist experiences with others, especially the next generation. It announces upcoming local iNaturalist bio blitz events open to all.
This document is the 2015 annual report from the New England Anti-Vivisection Society (NEAVS). It summarizes NEAVS's work in 2015, including presenting at conferences on animal testing regulations, outreach events to promote cruelty-free cosmetics, and campaigns opposing animal testing on chimpanzees. It highlights successes like the USDA and NIH changing policies on primates in research. The report also provides financial details, showing that most funding came from bequests and individual contributions, and that the majority of expenses went to program activities. It thanks donors for supporting NEAVS's mission to end animal testing and replace it with modern alternatives.
Mpala Research Centre is a Kenyan NGO that facilitates human-wildlife coexistence and improves human livelihoods through education, outreach, and science-based conservation research.
