These are the slides from the sold out Philly Tech Week Introduction to NodeJS workshop run by Ross Kukulinski, a product manager at NodeSource.
In this tutorial, we will provide a brief overview of NodeJS, including its strengths and weaknesses, best practices, and package management. After the introduction, attendees will have the remainder of the tutorial to learn NodeJS through hands-on NodeSchool.io exercises with assistance from a team of mentors.
NodeSchool.io is a series of choose-your-own-adventure style workshops that teach people how to use NodeJS, NPM, and other related tools by writing code to solve realistic problems. Node.js and How JavaScript is Changing Server Programming Tom Croucher
Node.js is a highly concurrent JavaScript server written on top of the V8 JavaScript runtime. This is awesome for a number of reasons. Firstly Node.js has re-architected some of the core module of V8 to create a server implementation that is non-blocking (similar to other event driven frameworks like Ruby’s Event Machine or Python’s Twisted). Event driven architectures are a natural fit for JavaScript developers because it’s already how the browser works. By using an event driven framework Node is not only intuitive to use but also highly scalable. Tests have shown Node instances running tens of thousands of simultaneous users.
This session will explore the architectural basics of Node.js and how it’s different from blocking server implementations such as PHP, Rail or Java Servlets. We’ll explore some basic examples of creating a simple server, dealing with HTTP requests, etc.
The bigger question is once we have this awesome programming environment, what do we do with it? Node already has a really vibrant collection of modules which provide a range of functionality. Demystifying what’s available is pretty important to actually getting stuff done with Node. Since Node itself is very low level, lot’s of things people expect in web servers aren’t automatically there (for example, request routing). In order to help ease people into using Node this session will look at a range of the best modules for Node.js.
Get on board the NodeJS Express as we take a journey through what makes NodeJS special. Server-side JavaScript that has an event loop for a heart, we'll delve into its single threaded nature and the advantages provided. From there we'll pass through the land of the Node Package Management tool, how to set up your own package and bring in useful 3rd party packages as dependencies. Our final destination is ExpressJS, a Sinatra inspired framework for NodeJS.
Has the traditional intro to event looped servers (thanks Ryan!) with a couple of examples of why I think node.js is particularly exciting today. Code for the demos can be found at https://github.com/davidpadbury/node-intro.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

3. Background
V8 is an open source JavaScript engine developed by
Google. Its written in C++ and is used in Google Chrome
Browser.
Node.js runs on V8.
It was created by Ryan Dahl in 2009.
Latest version is 4.0.0
Is Open Source. It runs well on Linux systems, can also run
on Windows systems.
4. Introduction: Basic
In simple words Node.js is ‘server-side
JavaScript’.
In not-so-simple words Node.js is a high-performance
network applications framework, well
optimized for high concurrent environments.
It’s a command line tool.
In ‘Node.js’ , ‘.js’ doesn’t mean that its solely written
JavaScript. It is 40% JS and 60% C++.

‘Node's goal is to provide an easy way to build

5. Introduction: Advanced (& Confusing)
Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O
model, which makes it lightweight. (from
nodejs.org!)
It makes use of event-loops via JavaScript’s
callback functionality to implement the non-
blocking I/O.
Programs for Node.js are written in JavaScript but
not in the same JavaScript we are use to.
Everything inside Node.js runs in a single-thread.
6. Example-1: Getting Started & Hello World
Install/build Node.js.
Open your favorite editor and start typing
JavaScript.
When you are done, open cmd/terminal and type
this:
‘node your_file.js’
Here is a simple example, which prints ‘hello world’

sys.puts(“hello”);
//it prints ‘hello’ first and waits for 3 seconds and then

7. Some Theory: Event-loops
Event-loops are the core of event-driven programming,
almost all the UI programs use event-loops to track the
user event, for example: Clicks, Ajax Requests etc.

9. What can you do with Node.js ?
You can create an HTTP server and print ‘hello world’
on the browser in just 4 lines of JavaScript.
You can create a TCP server similar to HTTP server, in
just 4 lines of JavaScript.
You can create a DNS server.
You can create a Static File Server.
You can create a Web Chat Application.
Node.js can also be used for creating online games,
collaboration tools or anything which sends updates to
the user in real-time.
10. Example -2 &3 (HTTP Server & TCP
Server)
Following code creates an HTTP Server and prints ‘Hello World’ on
the browser:

Here is an example of a simple TCP server which listens on port

11. Node.js Ecosystem
Node.js heavily relies on modules, in previous examples
require keyword loaded the http & net modules.
Creating a module is easy, just put your JavaScript code in a
separate js file and include it in your code by using keyword
require, like:
var modulex = require(‘./modulex’);
Libraries in Node.js are called packages and they can be
installed by typing
npm install “package_name”; //package should be
available in npm registry @ nmpjs.org
NPM (Node Package Manager) comes bundled with Node.js
installation.
12. Example-4: Lets connect to a DB
(Mongoose)
Install mongoose using npm, elegant mongodb object
modeling for node.js
npm install mongoose

13. When to use Node.js?
Node.js is good for creating streaming based real-
time services, web chat applications, static file
servers etc.
If you need high level concurrency and not worried
about CPU-cycles.
You can use the same language at both the places:
server-side and client-side.

16. When to not use Node.js
When you are doing heavy and CPU intensive
calculations on server side, because event-loops
are CPU hungry.
Most of the packages are also unstable. Therefore
is not yet production ready.
